Until now I didn't know what tribe, except that it was in New York State. I have always felt the ancestors linking me to the land. I live in the land of the Ganiekeh. Ganiekeh; I honor your People as part of this land. Some of my ancestors were German and settled in the early days of Colonization before the English. I live in the foothills of the Adirondacks, a beautiful place. I love this land. I was born here. Even though the land is now owned by New York State they allow everyone to enjoy the land. There are laws that must be followed so in a way NYS protects and is the keeper of the land. If I were you I would have lots of children and repopulate as fast as you can. Grow your tribe. Instill good values and live in unity with nature. Be role models for all Americans, for all people of this world.

I want to start a community in our area governed by this society's rules and standards. We are so much in need of this. I am part Mohawk on my mother's side through my maternal grandmother's lineage. Not much - at least not enough to be considered on paper, but in my spirit, I know where I belong.

Her father's parents had lived both in Brooklyn, NY and also in Buffalo, Erie county, NY. They were both buried in Buffalo. Their youngest daughter, Hazel Max (nee Weaver) had lived and died in Buffalo in 1984. My grandmother left NY for San Diego in 1932. I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I am st regis Mohawk and Coast S 4:35 alish from Washington state. I grew up in Washington Its nice to see things about the Mohawk side of my heritage.
I'm pretty much entirely European / "white". My grandfather however, certainly wasn't. I distinctly remember the trips he'd make from New York down to where my family resided in PA. He had this crazy long silver hair that he always kept in a pony tail, and a slightly cherry hue to his skin. Always wearing bandanas, and smoking bud the guy was a huge hippie in my eyes as a child haha. I had been told countless times that Mohawk ancestry that came from this side of my family, from my mother, grandfather and other family as well. I don't know the legitimacy behind these claims, nor do I pretend to carry Mohawk culture or heritage. But I'll always carry a profound amount of interest and respect for these peoples. My grandfather was the most worry-free, in the moment, nature-loving man I have ever known. My mother & her siblings never adopted the same sort of attitudes that my grandfather had. It's hard to describe, most people are so consumed with their daily happenings and this schizophrenic industrialized world that we live in, but not him. He was perfectly content with his time spent woodworking in nature, or smoking some nature to unwind with family 😂. I'll probably always associate that loving and worry-free attitude with the Mohawk people to some degree

I have recently discovered I am descended from this community (upon connecting with St Lawrence and St Regis tribes and being directed to connect. I have not been able to connect as I am not sure how to. I live in Minnesota but want to connect in a meaningful way that honors my history- and I want to learn culture and language and live it every day. I am currently participating in a Dakota community- which I will continue as an honorary member- but connecting my own history dots is so important.
I may be Celtic/Norse, but I say a Longhouse must be a Traditional one. The old way! ..My kind had them too, but covered with turf. The roof turned green in spring!

It was a great day when Ganienkeh settled in Altona. The locals didn't like it and still don't. I remember when Kevin M. made his car backfire on purpose to scare an Indian riding his pony. Where are you now, Kevin? Oh yeah, you ran your father's store into the ground and you had to close it, but the Ganienkeh are thriving. Karma at it's best.
My grandmother was pure mohawk indian from Rochester/ buffalo ny area she was a granddaughter of Indian chief Joseph brant! He is literally listed in my lineage which i found amazing! My grandmother married a polish man and here i am lol. But her maiden name was brant and i want to learn more of our culture. 💜💜
My tota (grandfather) in from Rochester/ buffalo area aswell. My tota girl is from Syracuse area and turtle island. I have a lot of family on Cornwall island(turtle island) it’s where I live now. My totas all hate being called Indian, When people ask them if they are Indian they always say “no I am not Indian, I am Native American” or they would say Mohawk. But never Mohawk Indian or native Indian or Indian period. The elders say Indians come from India. 😂 they don’t like being called Indian.

My nieces and nephews first time picking up a bow and arrow and all their shots were bullseye. Of course, the camp leaders were shocked. So much that they were put in the local newspaper. I don't know anything else about her parents. I am aware that the colonizers allowed people who were not native to Turtle Island to purchase names to be put on the Dawes roll. SMH
My mom is mohawk born raised on rez. I heard a lot of her childhood. No running water, outhouse, lugging water, bathing in a pot, no electricity. I grew up this way. Mother Earth provided our veggies and fruit. My Mother did canning and we did maple syrup. Father went hunting for meat and he only took what we would use. We grew up with no electric, heat or indoor plumbing. We had to haul our wood a d water. It was a tuff life, but it made me a stronger woman. I know I do have some Mohawk blood in me. I was doing some family history and then was surprised when I found "Kanienʼkehá꞉ka" on it- for all intents and purposes I'm a white guy with an English name, and this apparent indigenous ancestry is pretty distant (my grandmother never mentioned these ancestors, which tells me she knew nothing about them), but I still want to learn about it. Dear friend and brother from a little boy I had dreams of a Mohawk chief always with me guiding my decisions I never spoke of this to my family I made a trip to Boston Massachusetts to see my aunt Aileen I was going through the family picture box at her house I came acrossed a photograph of a party outside in front of the original house that was a farm I saw native Americans dressed in traditional regalia I asked my aunt about the picture she replied it was a Halloween party for some reason this did not set right with my spirit I felt the photograph was on authentic and these were truly my relatives of the past for some reason generations had hidden this beautiful lineage denying the Mohawk blood coursing through my veins time went on and genetic testing became All the rage my sister bought a genetic test kit for my mother she took the test and found out lo-and-behold yes indeed my mother had a strong amount of Mohawk blood in her when I found out this information I was greatly relieved happy and excited get my spirit-guide had spoken truthfully to me and indeed the spirit of my great-great-grandfather which is so very strong has become my spirit-guide & Ally I hope my story helps you in your journey to find the beginnings of your roots God bless you brother!

I have recently discovered I am descended from this community (upon connecting with St Lawrence and St Regis tribes and being directed to connect. I have not been able to connect as I am not sure how to. I live in Minnesota but want to connect in a meaningful way that honors my history- and I want to learn culture and language and live it every day. I am currently participating in a Dakota community- which I will continue as an honorary member- but connecting my own history dots is so important.

I may be Celtic/Norse, but I say a Longhouse must be a Traditional one. The old way! ..My kind had them too, but covered with turf. The roof turned green in spring!

Regardless, I'd give it up. Then, do I get to become part of the tribe. We are only 6% kanienkehaka . They call us Mohawks. I believe we are Algonquian-Konawake.
Where do I belong after? Yes, its on my mother's side. I bought my land so I had a place to give thanks for. Yet, I am acrossed the country and my land isn't but big enough but for few families and a garden.
I knew before I was told that I was from this land since I was a child. I would learn language and do my part. I share with everyone and make sure that I will have some to give to my family's family. I do it alone because many take advantage of my kindness. Misinterpreting it for ignorance. Yet, I remain unchanged and will continue giving and trying to help others by giving them a place to call home. When they take or think of themselves, its time for them to go or when I am doing it all. It was a great day when Ganienkeh settled in Altona. The locals didn't like it and still don't. I remember when Kevin M. made his car backfire on purpose to scare an Indian riding his pony. Where are you now, Kevin? Oh yeah, you ran your father's store into the ground and you had to close it, but the Ganienkeh are thriving. Karma at it's best.
My grandmother was pure mohawk indian from Rochester/ buffalo ny area she was a granddaughter of Indian chief Joseph brant! He is literally listed in my lineage which i found amazing! My grandmother married a polish man and here i am lol. But her maiden name was brant and i want to learn more of our culture. 💜💜

I have a lot of family on Cornwall island(turtle island) it’s where I live now.
My totas all hate being called Indian,
When people ask them if they are Indian they always say “no I am not Indian, I am Native American” or they would say Mohawk.
But never Mohawk Indian or native Indian or Indian period.
The elders say Indians come from

My nieces and nephews first time picking up a bow and arrow and all their shots were bullseye. Of course, the camp leaders were shocked. So much that they were put in the local newspaper. I don't know anything else about her parents. I am aware that the colonizers allowed people who were not native to Turtle Island to purchase names to be put on the Dawes roll. SMH

I grew up this way. Mother Earth provided our veggies and fruit. My Mother did canning and we did maple syrup. Father went hunting for meat and he only took what we would use. We grew up with no electric, heat or indoor plumbing. We had to haul our wood a d water. It was a tuff life, but it made me a stronger woman. I know I do have some Mohawk blood in me. A lot of quotes my father & mother used were Mohawk. My spirt animals are the wolf and the beat> I am proud to say I am Mohawk!

I was doing some family history and then was surprised when I found "Kanienʼkehá꞉ka" on it- for all intents and purposes I'm a white guy with an English name, and this apparent indigenous ancestry is pretty distant (my grandmother never mentioned these ancestors, which tells me she knew nothing about them), but I still want to learn about it. What are some appropriate (or not appropriate) ways of doing that?
I wish I knew. It's very hard if exact names etc are not on "record"

Dear friend and brother from a little boy I had dreams of a Mohawk chief always with me guiding my decisions I never spoke of this to my family I made a trip to Boston Massachusetts to see my aunt Aileen I was going through the family picture box at her house I came acrossed a photograph of a party outside in front of the original house that was a farm I saw native Americans dressed in traditional regalia I asked my aunt about the picture she replied it was a Halloween party for some reason this did not set right with my spirit I felt the photograph was on authentic and these were truly my relatives of the past for some reason generations had hidden this beautiful lineage denying the Mohawk blood coursing through my veins time went on and genetic testing became All the rage my sister bought a genetic test kit for my mother she took the test and found out lo-and-behold yes indeed my mother had a strong amount of Mohawk blood in her when I found out this information I was greatly relieved happy and excited get my spirit-guide had spoken truthfully to me and indeed the spirit of my great-great-grandfather which is so very strong has become my spirit-guide & Ally I hope my story helps you in your journey to find the beginnings of your roots God bless you brother!

I've been learning alot about my native heritage b/c its lost in my family who moved from NY to the south. Knowledge is everything and I'm proud of my rich heritage, the language is something I'd love to learn how to speak and write it.
