Unless noted otherwise in the essay prompt, your essay does not need to relate to what you want to major in (and you could still use the essay to shed light on who you are and what matters to you).

Since we don't know your individual circumstances, we'd still advise checking with your counselor-and of course ensuring that your essay addresses the particular prompt you're answering. Colleges want to get to know you and what understand what matters to you, so in general, if you're able to demonstrate the range of your interests across your application-via transcript, essay, extracurriculars, recommendations, etc.-all the better.
