Does your essay have to relate to what you want to major in?

Unless noted otherwise in the essay prompt, your essay does not need to relate to what you want to major in (and you could still use the essay to shed light on who you are and what matters to you).

@@ThePrincetonReview Thanks for the reply! So even if I wanted to major in computer science, could I write an essay about my passions for human rights and environmentalism? Or would that not be "academic" enough?

@@sparkle0859 Those sound like fascinating essay topics! (They also showcase the breadth and depth of your interests.) Since we don't know your individual circumstances, we'd still advise checking with your counselor-and of course ensuring that your essay addresses the particular prompt you're answering. Colleges want to get to know you and what understand what matters to you, so in general, if you're able to demonstrate the range of your interests across your application-via transcript, essay, extracurriculars, recommendations, etc.-all the better. Best of luck!!
