Believe it or not, this song has helped my very southern, very conservative, very Christian family accept our gay cousin. It's amazing how much impact a SONG can have, but my aunt is a big fan of Kasey and this song opened her mind and heart and enabled her to have a compassionate conversation with her son (our cousin) and she told him she loves him no matter what. Follow your arrow.
/) God bless, man! Not that many can Change their ways when they've been set in the way they are for so long.
That's amazing... So glad to hear about people opening their minds to new ideas.
Great to hear! Power of music
That is amazing! :) I wish my parents were like that. :(
+Sean Cushing, don't say God bless. God doesn't accept gays, so don't use it like that.
10 years ago I heard this while in prison now it’s putting my infant son to sleep. I love you Kacey your music is the best
Same! I was in MDOC 10 years ago and remember watching the video every morning on CMT! Wasn’t expecting to see this comment but glad I did!
So you're a groomer? Raising a boy to have no morals.

I might send this to my mom. This is the kind of advice she gave me when I came out of the closet and whenever bullying got me down. She's such an open minded woman despite coming from a very close minded family. She was heavily abused and neglected, but she's always had a heart of gold. I could never ask for a better mom.
Forgot to update this. She loves the song now.

As all things should be
Shocked you haven't gotten hate yet
.. its sad the hate we live when im shock by NOT seeing hate at this point
This probably fucked up the hicks
With an emphasis on lesbians too, takes people a little more time to understand that women liking women is gay too
Lyrics:
If you save yourself for marriage
You're a bore
You don't save yourself for marriage
You're a horrible person
If you won't have a drink
Then you're a prude
But they'll call you a drunk
As soon as you down the first one
If you can't lose the weight
Then you're just fat
But if you lose too much
Then you're on crack
You're damned if you do
And you're damned if you don't
So you might as well just do
Whatever you want
So, make lots of noise
Kiss lots of boys
Or kiss lots of girls
If that's something you're into
When the straight and narrow
Gets a little too straight
Roll up a joint, or don't
Just follow your arrow
Wherever it points, yeah
Follow your arrow
Wherever it points
If you don't go to church
You'll go to hell
If you're the first one on the front row
You're self-righteous son of a-
Can't win for losin'
You 'll just disappoint 'em
Just 'cause you can't beat 'em
Don't mean you should join 'em
So, make lots of noise
Kiss lots of boys
Or kiss lots of girls
If that's something you're into
When the straight and narrow
Gets a little too straight
Roll up a joint, or don't
Just follow your arrow
Wherever it points, yeah
Follow your arrow
Wherever it points
Say what you think (Say what you think)
Love who you love (Love who you love)
'Cause you just get so many trips 'round the sun
Yeah, you only
Only live once
So make lots of noise
Kiss lots of boys
Or kiss lots of girls
If that's what you're into
When the straight and narrow
Gets a little too straight
Roll up a joint, I would
And follow your arrow
Wherever it points, yeah
Follow your arrow
Wherever it points

Hearing a country song telling young girls/women that it's all right to be whatever they are, including something outside of heterosexual, is just sort of shocking, in the best way. Kacey Musgraves has been winning my heart piece by piece ever since I heard Merry Go Round, and this just knocked me head over heels. Thank you for this, for including everyone and not sounding like you care the littlest bit one way or the other.
Exactly!
This girl is Country's music savior, and if she continues to develop quality music - the voice of a generation.
Yes! I couldn't agree more! But I fear unless she starts prancing around in skimpy outfits like all the other pop/country stars, she will fade into oblivion. Remember when music REALLY used to be about the music?
crispappletart I agree! However, I wouldn't mind if she dwelled into the Pop genre to increase her appeal & reach, but only if she did it in her own style and not convert into some bubblegum pop "Superstar".
crispappletart yes like the Nashville sound /s
crispappletart i don't think ALL pop/country stars prance around in skimpy outfits. there are times when miranda lambert would wear jeans a shirt on stage or leather pants and a shirt. i will say that taylor swift needs to fucking cover up her stomach. im tired of seeing it. but yeah.
Kero Heart hey man nice to meet you. U should totally listen to pet sounds the album. It has some really catchy songs amd even my mom liked it. And my brother too but I'm not allowed to talk about him
i forget where she performed, but i remember watching this live on tv and listening to the lyrics as a young lesbean stoner made me so happy lmao

I know I like to smoke a joint to this song lol
What does it mean..?
Why did nobody ever tell me that country could be better than the same 5 songs praising God, beer, trucks, and dirt roads?
thats 4
+Rockskillskids I'm from the UK so country songs have very little appeal to me, but something like this does. Wouldn't have even guessed it was country music because it wasn't about the topics you mentioned.
Great song.
+Rockskillskids somebody needs to tell record companies that songs not praising God, beer, trucks, and dirt roads can make money.
+Rockskillskids You mean bro-country (Florida Georgia Line, Luke Bryan etc.). Bro-country is the subgenre of country music. Not all country music is about those things.
Plus don't generalise. It's like Indie snobs saying "all pop music is about sex, money and drugs".
I normally don't like country music but I love this song

such a horrible misconception that most country is about that! country is awesome :D

Can't believe I lived under a rock till the Grammys. Glad I found her!
ikr i wish i would've found her much sooner

The first time I saw her was when she performed this song on the Grammys a few years ago. I believe she won best new artist that year.
She didn’t have to include the kiss lots of girls or love who you love lines, but she did and I am forever thankful!
a simple but powerful message, touching lyrics, a beautiful voice, and a beautiful smile. i feel like she would be there for me y’know? lovely song, im seriously depressed lately and this song made my day
Guys she's talking about double standards. Some of the things aren't meant to be taken serious but the message is essential.
Yeesh. Is this how country music fans always are? One mention of tolerance for gay people and suddenly there's a huge discussion about how right or wrong it is! It's not a big deal! And for the record, it's great! God doesn't commend people who are hateful or unaccepting of anyone. Good for this girl for teaching us that it doesn't matter what you are or what you believe. Be happy.
Robbie Baker Annoying as heck isn't it. They need to get a life and click another song if they don't like it.
Robbie Baker Not all of us are like that.
I personally don't agree with same sex marriage. However, I'm not a douche about it either. IMO it's to each their own. As long as they're not trying to force their lifestyle on me and vice-versa I don't care what anyone does. Life is too short to have so much hate.

I hear you! We're always behind here in Hawaii... I just heard this song in the last 6 months through Pandora, and has been on my playlist ever since.... I LOVE BISCUITS too!
Its around 10 years old 😢
I have to applaud the main theme of this song. Country music has been traditionally thought of as a musical bastion where conservative ideas about morality can flourish. Kacey Musgraves' "Follow Your Arrow", really goes against that grain, proclaiming far more individual freedom - even going so far as to say that one should have the discretion to express ones sexuality as one wants (ex.1) and that one can use whatever substance one wants to use (ex.2):
ex.1
"Kiss lots of boys. Or kiss lots of girls. If that's something you're into"
ex.2
"Roll up a joint, or don't"
I am sure that makes the old time country folks irate, since they believe everything has to conform to their idea about "good Christian values". I am glad to see that country is evolving past espousing these antiquated ideas.
This is mainly because she fits into the popular outlaw country scene with miranda lambert, pistol annies, ashley monroe. Its a subgenre of country that goes against the conservative nature of country.
Ivan Rodriguez That is interesting. Considering I have just started to listening to country recently, I did not know that. Thank you for the information
Kacey Musgraves writes progressive songs with heartfelt messages that working class people can relate to.
Nashville: QUICK! Take her music off the radio stations! We can't have the public know that country singers can sing about more topics besides trucks, jeans and dirt roads!
Omg this has me cracking up!!! 😂🤣😍
Where's the clap track?!?
So this is why her music is played in Canada. If progressivism could be snorted, Canada would’ve overdosed more then 30 years ago
You forgot girls and beer
Soooooo agree
Listened this song today for the first time, nd immediately fall in love with this,...soo much needed in this 2022
Leaving this here, hoping my children and generation still find it when I'm long gone.. Do what makes you happy, don't hurt yourself and anyone else!! 💜
This song literally makes me so happy she simply points out the truths of society and you can't really deny that then she just tells you to go your own way and not to care about what others think it's beautiful really.
I love it
Looking through the comments and seeing so many young people believing in the general message of this song gives me hope. Maybe one day we really can stop fighting over stupid things like what we believe spiritually, who we love, and what we do with ourselves in our private life and focus on actual problems in this world.

New fanboy here. The super simplicity of this country song, with its solid message is powerful stuff. There is a magnetism in her delivery of it.
Kacey Musgraves is so wonderful! I feel like the judgement from others, the way Christianity has been used in America (and I'm a progressive Christian who goes to a United Church of Christ church saying this), the way nonChristians can also make it hard for Christians who don't fit traditional interpretations, the way that being mean is so much easier to some people than being nice is what makes this song resonate. However I live my life, I hope I never hate someone else who is different and harmless. It can be hard.

Just Saying, her figure is definitely amazing but that outfit she wears during the chorus is absurd.
They've said her lyrics are rebellious, though she doesn't see them as rebellious, she sees them as reflective of the current times.

Grew up on country. Turned to metal and hard rock when I got to High School. Fucking hated country music for a long time. Then Eric Church came around and I re-cracked that door again. I've let VERY few country artists in since his debut........ but damn.... Never thought a badass CHICK would completely revive my faith in country music returning to worthiness of my playlist. She's nso damn young too. Maybe she'll pump some fresh..... old school blood back into the country scene. I've always respected country since I turned to metal and hard rock since the country I listened to was a little edgy when I grew up. This chick is so off mainstream but more in line with what country USED to be about it makes me smile. Rock the fuck on Musgraves. Metalhead here gives you my thumbs up.
Same with me! Except I listen to more alternative and rock. Not too much metal, but then again I respect every type of music and will listen to a lot of types. Except for most rap. I love Eric Church a lot too, and he got me back into country. I grew up listening to 90s and early 00s country. I miss songs like those. Most of the new stuff is just complete crap.
doseofreality100 This is like old country?
How fucking old are you? 15? Just getting into high school? This is nothing like Waylon, Willie, David Allan Coe, Alan Jackson, Johnny Cash, Steve Earle, Hank, Hank Jr and Merle Haggard. Hell, as a metal head, you should know Hank the Third because of Assjack and Superjoint Ritual, and David Allan Coe because of Pantera.
That being said, this lady is alright, I guess. I've heard worse, but this isn't anything revolutionary. Pretty average, not bad but not good either.

You know, personally I believe that God made everyone just the way they were supposed to be. Even if I don't agree with someone I find it admirable when they can be themselves. These so called "Christians" sit around and judge and hate people for who they are. A real Christian tries there best to love everyone and remembers that what others do is between said person and God, I just pray that people who call themselves Christians can remember that.
Thank you! I was raised to believe that being a Christian is about being loving and accepting of everyone, and I get very frustrated with the people who treat it like some kind of exclusive clique and go around telling everyone else they're going to hell. It's refreshing to see someone else remember that God is merciful and loving.
Thankyou!!! I'm an athiest...that being said, I'd have a whole lot less issues with religion if they all thought like you! Peace!!!
Ej Meserve no one gives a shit
True because like i am a tree hugger and i admit it and thats because animals are just like people go they eat sleep drink and play and some of the dont live long so let them live a good life
I'm not a country music lover but goddamn... The lyrics on this are so nice and personal here. Good work.
People think oh it's just a cute song but it's way more than that. For some of us it's small things like this that keep us alive .
“Kiss lots of boys, or kiss lots of girls if that’s something you’re into” my bi heart🥺
both? both. both is good lol
Same omg I love this song
*SAME.* 💖💜💙
Same
After 50 years on this earth, I think I like country music now.
same bruh sameeee
I still hate it.
Back in the day country music was actually really progressive and impactful.
@healss the frog yup still boring as hell. The lyrics are so simple. I’m sorry it’s awful : /
I'm not big on country just some country. I'm more of a Western Dress Fellow
People who still listen to this in 2024 🖐️❤️
this song changed my life 10 years later. i was chasing him even after he stopped loving me, i couldnt move on and i couldnt enjoy anything. but you're right. there is only so many trips around the sun and i can be myself without that love, as much as i want it. thank you.
Just being honest I didn't know who Kacey was before the Grammy's...wow I'm in love! stunning beauty & amazing talent! Taylor, Carrie, Miranda & Faith must be shaking in their boots! A New Country Princess has been Tiara'd! and she truly sounds like a country artist! ;)
Kamalli Ganapa Yep just about the same age as Taylor...should be a rivalry for the ages at these award shows! ;)
I am in the same boat. Normally don't like country music, heard this song and now I think I want to marry Kacey Musgraves... o.o
Too late I'm dating her ;)
Noooo! D=

long story short this was being played in my christian school and it scared the crap out of me cuz I thought she said wh**e
It is because she did say it she said Whore able she said it the way she said it so it won't sound very bad to younger people and she stretched out the word whore so...
why would that scare you?
@@yekaterina4804 coz they said they were playing it in their christian school, plenty of things are forbidden there
My family is Christian and when I played this for my mom her face went from 😶 to 😁 (at the hoooooorible person part)
That part got me cracking up 😅
