  • This is my DIY fish pond cover. I keep tropical fish inside the fish pond so I need to make a cover so that it’s easier to heat. I’m also looking For advice on other ideas for covers if you guys have any please let me know. Some people use netting to cover their fish ponds to keep birds out while others use corrugated plastic sheets from green houses.

    Cover when you’re not in there and then when you go down open it up and enjoy your fish. Time to go upstairs, close it up for the night. This is really genius tho!!

    Use for now cause it does take away from the pond look, then remove once you heat the room👍🏻

    You might wanna cut a couple more holes in the lids, I would be slightly concerned with proper air exchange

      I have all my tanks covered the same exact way...I think was thinking about air exchange as well...I think I might cut a small rectangle in the lid for feeding at least

      I have kept several tanks with glass lids on them that have less air flow that that without any issue. And he is literally pumping air through the system with the sponge filters. There is no problem.

    You should make a green house tent over the whole pond, that way you won't need a lid and you can have tropical plants growing and shit. I don't know what I'm talking about though.

      or instead of heating the ponds he could heat the basement.

    • @woodworkerroyer8497
      @woodworkerroyer8497 Před 3 lety

      Yep. Totally agree. He could have plants going out of the water, and maybe even some lily pads...
      Although, that would require that he have some pretty crazy strong lights.

    I know this is a couple years old, and I’m not taking time to read comments, BUT, for insulating the bottom, you could drill a hole into each section underneath and blow spray foam to fill it.

    palmer if you had some property with lots of trees on it a wood burning stove would be perfect for you. My dad in western pa can almost heat the whole house with wood right from the property .

  • @chriselliott12
    @chriselliott12 Před 3 lety +1

    Notch the inside edge of the rim with a router. Then you can trim the plastic to sit tight in the notch an be flush with the wood at the top.

    • @chriselliott12
      @chriselliott12 Před 3 lety

      Think about how the plastic rim of an aquarium is made and the way a glass lid would sit on it

    I can highly recommend polycarbonate as a pond cover, I’m in the UK and my small unheated in the ground goldfish pond was covered with this all of last Winter, it keeps the wind from chilling the water and on a sunny day it will attract any warmth from the sun. All my fish survived, the water never dropped below 10 degrees Celsius all winter and I was able to continue feeding them a small amount each day - brilliant stuff.

    The cover looks fine! Saving money on electricity is super important in MN and you can just have the covers already off if you know someone is coming down and you want to impress them! I love it.

  • @raisinggoldfishonabudget7058

    I know this is a yr old video, but I would make a lid frame for the covers & secure them to the frame
    that way all gaps would be taken care of Which is what I done to mine & it works well on keeping
    the heat in as well as the fish.

    Converted my fishroom which I heat the tanks not the air to poly lids a few years back from diffuser. Roughly $200 in poly saved me over $100 a month in electricity.

  • @Rivcuban
    @Rivcuban Před 3 lety +1

    I wouldn't worry about the gap around the edges. The vast majority of the heat will still be retained.

    • @woodworkerroyer8497
      @woodworkerroyer8497 Před 3 lety +1

      Exactly. I have nothing to back it up with, but i suspect that more heat is lost to water evaporation than actual heat convection. While those lids look like they will work fine, they look really tacky (I say as they sit on what looks like the carcass of a pre-built shed lol). It is definitely cheaper, easier to work with, and more customizable, but glass looks WAY better (and it doesn't warp with time).

    I have a similar pond that I keep out doors...I live in Florida so I don’t need a heater but when winter comes I cover the top with plywood at night and remove it during the day...I also put in 3 300w heaters to make a “warm spot” ...the pond was insulated with foam insulation when it was built .. lowest temps I got all winter was 70

    I like it! I will probably do this someday, but outside. Yours looks absolutely great, especially considering the materials and time involved!
    Those lids are fine, but I highly doubt that THAT polycarbonate lets more light through than glass. Maybe some form does, but if I can't see through it clearly, I dont see how light gets through more efficiently. (But I have nothing to back up that claim, so I could be totally wrong).
    What heaters are you using? Why not heat the room as opposed to just the pond?
    To insulate the bottom (if mess and the look of the floor is not an issue), drill a few hole around the base, and get some Great Stuff from the hardware store to insulate it with. Just spray it through the holes and try to get it as far underneath as you can. That will give you a lot of r value for the money, and you won't have to tear down the whole pond to retrofit it (though that would be a better and cheaper option overall.)

  • @andrewc9188
    @andrewc9188 Před 3 lety

    a plywood tank would have been better im sure you would have a couple spare tanks to take a panel from then the lids could stay on and you could have looked through the side

    Honestly, ditch the pond. Unless you want to keep the pond for the Dovii to grow it out. We love the entertainment setup and your craftsmanship. Do with that what you will

  • @ONEFUNFONE
    @ONEFUNFONE Před 3 lety

    You'll need to pull those upper boards back up, check pieces for warpage- may have to cut newer sections out of straighter boards. The wood we get is almost junk, spend the time in the pile seeking the straightest pieces- especially for top pieces. You'll never get a good seal with warped or crooked wood screwed in whatever way it goes. Pull that screwe back out, use a brace piece, c clamps, sliding clamps to hold the piece. Foam tape typically isnt used in the hobby, it will get wet, get moldy and or dry out, over time flake away into the pond from moving lids on and off.... bigger cichlids will attempt to eat anything that's in their water, even just a taste. 36" underwater led bars under the cross supports, insulation, and outer cover might be the next investments for the pond. Oh- stain those upper boards, anything exposed to water will eventually get moldy as well or consider pressure treated instead. Good luck.

    I’m an optometrist and u are wrong, glass is the most clear. Even plastic CR-39 is more clear them poly. But your eyes won’t be able to tell the difference unless u focus really hard. We only use poly cause it’s cheap and shatter proof.

    Can anyone please answer this question regarding ph. I'm new to fish keeping and don't yet fully understand How ph affects fish. I've had some fancy goldfish in a 240 litre for 8 months now and the ph is 7.2. My watwater changes have been 60 litre weekly. I've never left it longer than a week because I was scared of affecting ph. But life has got in the way and water changes have been neglected for a month. My tap water ph is constantly 7.2 but my tank ph has dropped to 6.6. So my question is this. If my ph shifts suddenly from 6.6 to 7.0 would that be harmful to my fish.

    • @JFAquatics
      @JFAquatics Před 3 lety

      @@bankjob0982 huh? tomato/tomato. Yeah 'rock" is incondusive, but thats the point. It remains cold, and that trait doesn't cool the water. It is just resistant to heat penetration, and as a result, heat absorption. It's a "insulations board" except the meida isn't expanded foam ("air" suspended in "solids" the perfect combo of a non-conductive material - and the hyper conductive substance. Designed to slow absorption of energy. tomato/tomato. Different inflections, same result.
