The mechanism of action of Salbutamol can be explained in the following five steps:
Salbutamol binds to beta-2 adrenergic receptors present in the smooth muscles of the airways.
This binding leads to the activation of the enzyme adenylate cyclase, which converts adenosine triphosphate (ATP) into cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP).
Increased levels of cAMP activate protein kinase A (PKA), which in turn phosphorylates myosin light chain kinase (MLCK) and inhibits its activity.
As a result, the concentration of intracellular calcium decreases, leading to the relaxation of the smooth muscles of the airways and bronchodilation.
This relaxation of the airway smooth muscles increases the diameter of the airways and improves airflow to the lungs, providing relief from symptoms of bronchoconstriction such as wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath.
