  • This video is an introduction to the Swedish furniture architect Axel-Einar Hjorth, a designer known not least for his rustic looking pinewood furniture made for Nordiska Kompaniet in the 1920's an 30's. But he was so much more than that! Active as a designer in the transition between neoclassicism and modernism he created some of the best neoclassical furniture ever made in Sweden, a fact often forgotten when talking about his life's work.

Considering his pretensions, one expects AEH would be gratified by the obscene prices his pieces bring today.

Thanks, I especially enjoyed hearing the biographical aspects of Hjorth's life. He certainly had his ups and downs, but in the end, made a name for himself. I also enjoyed listening to one of the music selections: "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms." We used to sing that hymn in church when I was a kid. It's a folksy bit of Americana, written in Victoria times - it goes well with the Hjorth's furniture designs.

Thanks Jamie! We're so glad you found the video interesting. Yeah, the hymn went well with the furniture by Hjorth, we thought it catches the spirit of Hjorth's furniture.

Did you find any information about the finish that was used for the furniture made for Nordiska Kompaniets Verkstäder? Been trying to find a way of recreating the stained and varnished pine but can find no info about what was originally used.

I'm not sure exactly what finish they used (It's probably illegal today for environmental reasons). But they were acid stained. Personally I sometimes use Potassium permanganate to stain wood into a stained finish.
