First Days in the Box Van - Florida VanLife on the Road 02/2021

- After a week camped for free at Lake Panaskoffkee Wildlife Refuge we head towards Potts Preserve for another week of free camping. We paddle a 7 mile stretch of the Withlacoochee River and enjoy some more time in nature. I will be starting building the van into a camper in the next videos.
*My name is Brian. I started living full time in a self built camper van in 2014 in my hometown of San Diego, CA. I hit the road full-time in 2015 to pursue seasonal work and travel around the U.S. I find free camping on public land and enjoy photography, hiking, biking, and kayaking in nature. Spanish moss has chiggers in it.
It used to be harvested, smoked and bought by Ford motor company in Jacksonville for seat stuffing. I know a woman 94 that as a child did harvesting of moss to help feed the family.

I buy Spanish moss at the garden center to mulch my houseplants. It helps maintain humidity and retain moisture in the soil. Its also an attractive soil covering.

Put a piano hinge on that pass through and make it a door. Also consider putting in two fans one front one back, the cross flow is amazing that way.
I agree on the door hinge pass thru!
You could also put a fan mounted in the door to utilize the heat gain in the cab when cool and needed it then reverse it with the windows cracked when hot.

@Advanture Road With a door there is less area to have to heat and cool.👍 He might consider just hanging a insulated curtains in the cab side of the pass thru.

Brian is a class act
We nomads have our lifestyle in common, we don't see age, race, religion or any of the other things society and politicians have their problems with. We form deep, open and lasting friendships that are wonderful. We're all good people !
I've used these Van's frequently, & a sliding pass thru is 'cleaner', no swing room needed, (save space) as for your overhead door...whatever you do, make it like it belongs there, if u want to maintain some stealth, otherwise have fun!

I grew up in Florida during the 60’s and 70’s. Tent camped all over the state. This is the Florida I remember. Thanks for bringing back good memories! Best of luck with the box van build.
I've lived in Florida for 12 years now and had no clue of these cool campsites. We have always traveled back to Michigan. Not anymore 😃. Thankyou for sharing.
I keep thinking about florida and its sink holes. Its a beautifull area and I'm giddy with excitement to see the build process.

It's wonderful seeing the beauty of Florida through a visitor's eyes. You're marveling at all the stuff I take for granted--spanish moss, large oaks, and crystal clear springs.

Y'all made me so homesick. My son lives on property right up on the green swamp in central Florida. It looks just like the second site with oaks, pines, palm and all the scrub. When you said you were testing the water .I was like...no this is not a good idea.. Mama gators are out ..there you go jumping in! Lol brave man.
BTW ..I love moss too and it's becoming rare to see it.

Great idea!
But then he wouldn’t be able to use one entire side of the wall. That space is pretty useful.
@@OUMagMan for a barn door he would have to leave the space clear for the door to slide, that eliminates a whole wall for attaching shelves or structures. If he makes a pocket door, he can’t have long screws going into that section where it slides, again restricting anything he could build and attach to that wall. The van we built out, every inch is precious, especially wall space where you can attach things of substantial weight. Functional wins over cute any day.

Amazing how that water coming out of the spring is so warm! Living most of my life in the Pacific North West where but for a few geothermal springs the water is so cold!

Withlacoochee campgrounds a great place to be this time of year
Driving in to your new camp with the music playing was very relaxing. We lived not to far from there and I use to kayak and tube on the Rainbow River. We are in the Az desert now but I think I like the heat and humidity, green trees and being near the water better than the dry dusty, windy desert. Looking forward to seeing your home improvements soon. Kelly is getting a little braver. We got to see her smiling face a few times😊

Only someone from the north or out west would say 72 degree water is warm .We used to dive many of Florida's Springs and always wore full wet suits.Great video and looking forward to the build .
Brian I'm so glad for you and Kelly to be able to enjoy Florida. Trying to get caught up on videos. Love the swimming and the underwater. Awesome footage of the sun going down. Perhaps you could put an outside door in the back with a window for just incase you want to put an air conditioner in latter on. Somewhere there might be a Habitat for Humanity to get things cheep. Lots of gators in that river..used to run my airboat in the Withlacoochee river. Brings back good memories...
