    I'm a PADI SCUBA divemaster, by now I have something like 200 dives, and the first thing I've ever learn from my instructors in every level, was to NOT touch anything down there, that includes lobsters and every single thing at sea is a blessed gift from mother nature, the only stuff that you can take from the bottom are pictures, and you can leave behind your bubbles, that's it. By the way I'm telling that you have to keep your neutral bouyancy to avoid damage the sea floor or get injured by any life form. Anyway nice video...

    Nice video, but I'm not sure about spear-fishing with O² bottles, might as well use dynamite...
    As a matter of fact I'm glad this is forbidden in my country, when the animal has no chance I don't see where is the fun, it's not fishing/hunting any longer.
    But nice crays guys, nature in Australia is still magnificent and can take the abuse I guess.

    • @pignonMZ6
      @pignonMZ6 Před 9 lety +1

      Great example, the results of this method of hunting in Europe are forests without deers and governments reintroducing deer artificially to boost the numbers.
      I'm all for bow and arrows, hunting shouldn't be easy, killing a wild animal to eat its flesh should be earned.
      I hunt and fish myself, quite a lot, and it's true I often come home bare handed but it's never been about killing, it's the journey, and if I get the chance to bring something home I will take it.

    • @jumbojimbo1802

      pignonMZ6 Not as easy as it looks Pig, we have about 10mins bottom time at that spot. The rare fish that is legal to take don't hang around waiting to be pinged. Fish numbers are monitored and regulated, you can't take demersals 15 Oct - 15Dec (our spring/summer), size and catch limits apply. If I pick up a tasty treat every three or four trips out pretty happy.

I am getting too old now and have not had any crayfish, or what they sell as crayfish from here in the UK for over 15 years, maybe I will never have any more, sad to think like that but probably true.

    Awesome video. I live in Namibia and we have South west african rock lobsters (crayfish). We normally use ring nets and free diving to catch these guys.

    FWI. It's illegal to spear or use any pointed instrument to catch crayfish in Western Australia. That's why the OP used the loop tool thingy. Nice to see the size of the crays in this video.
    If a female cray has even one egg (what we called Berry) on it you can get a criminal conviction.

    These guys were doing everything just fine. Weather you call them Crayfish or Spiny Lobster, the equipment they were using was legal. They were checking the sex of the animals & releasing the females. In northern California, you can't get abalone using SCUBA. You have to free dive for them. I believe the tool they were using is called a "tickle stick".

    • @Livingthing8
      @Livingthing8 Před 9 lety

      We have to free dive for abs as well. We can only get 5 sundays a year between 7 and 8am. There are always plenty to get because of the rules, they would get wiped out otherwise. Not that I bother anymore tried a few ways to eat them but they taste ordinary I reckon.

      Spiny lobsters, also known as langouste or rock lobsters, are a family (Palinuridae) of about 60 species of achelate crustaceans, in the Decapoda Reptantia. Spiny lobsters are also, especially in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and The Bahamas, sometimes called crayfish, sea crayfish or crawfish ("kreef" in South Africa), terms which elsewhere are reserved for freshwater crayfish.[1]

    @ARK1phil Před 7 lety

    Mate, yes they do all over the world! and a lot of them are doing it for a living, and a lot of that product is imported to developed countries where you pay a premium (and the divers get paid a pittance).... I say this with a first hand experience since I have spent my life working and living in 26 different countries all on the sea diving and fishing .... currently based in West Africa.
    .... Your right spearfishing with scuba in developed countries is 100% frowned upon.
    Although, in my humble opinion, if someone is going diving with a plan to spear a fish,.... having SCUBA does allow them the time to choose more carefully the species, size and placing good kill shots.... and thats more environmentally friendly than a recreational / occasional snorkel diver shooting quickly at any random fish passing him during his breath hold. Regular experienced breath hold spearos - normally target specific species and size range would have to be the best way for the environment, but sadly most of the spearfishing is by occasional recreational.
    Maybe spearfishing / speargun ownership should regulated like everything else in Australia, perhaps a two hour video and 20 questions would protect the environment and people. I more concerned seeing loaded spearguns waving around pointing out of the water and pointing at boat occupants more than I worry about shooting a fish on SCUBA.
    Having said all that, looks like the guys had a great day and fished responsibly. Nice video....

    • @Livingthing8
      @Livingthing8 Před 6 lety

      Pretty regulated on what fish /when you can ping em, demersal ban Oct 15-Nov 15 so no nice bottom dwellers in cray prime time, also size and number restrictions per person/boat. Don't catch nearly as much as free divers, they can float around forever waiting to spot a fish. More of a bonus every now and then to get a nice fish.

      Phoevos G'day Phoevos, that patch is at 40m. Pretty reliable spot when the crays aren't in close and also a chance of nailing a good fish every now and then.

    To anyone who doesn't know these are in no way lobsters, spiny lobsters, etc
    They are a different yet related species like Maine and Canadian lobsters
    I have tasted these crayfish and spiny lobster side by side and these Crayfish are much softer than what you find in the USA

    The only things we can catch over in Canada are little river crayfish, up to the size of your palm. Damned hard to get, though.

    Very nice nice video! In USA we call freshwaters Cray/crawfish and saltwaters lobster. Interesting in you don't have another name to distinguish the two. But I have heard yabbies before ;)

    • @Livingthing8
      @Livingthing8 Před 9 lety

      Loganeffecto We have a few freshwater varities, maron, yabbies, gilgie,koonac. Offically the crays in the video are called western rock lobster, mainly for the export market. Locals still call them crays.
