  • Forty years of evolution to any product will always result in exciting development. However, forty years of evolution on a motorcycle offers something far more special than just excitement alone.
BMW GS turned 40 years old in 2021, and to celebrate, BMW Motorrad launched the R 1250 GS TE 40th Anniversary Edition. A landmark bike for BMW and the perfect first ever press bike for Driven Chat to have a play with.
John Marcar was tasked with taking the R 1250 GS to one of his favourite driving and riding locations in the world - the Brecon Beacons in Wales to find out just how special the GS has become over the years.

A fair and honest review (I'm on a 2020 1250 which is my 3rd GS) once you have one if it's your only bike it's difficult to find anything else that's better for most riders. Before each one I've test ridden most on the competition and the ride home after on the GS has always been the litmus test for me. Probably the things that'll get me off one eventually as I get further into my 60's are the weight and cost but for now it's my perfect bike. I agree totally about the QS, but I find the mix and match approach works well for me and the single biggest advantage it offers are on those 3rd or 4th gear multiple overtakes where you can select the next gear without loosing any momentum. A truly great bike.

Great review, John. I came from a very raw 2004 Aprilia RSV 1000R, to a 2022 GSA. Every time I ride the GS I'm blown away by the bike's all-around ability. The riding modes make a huge difference to the character and I'm continually playing. Dynamic pro when I'm being sportsbike bike embarrassing, and road when I'm off to eat doughnuts. I also keep my top box on, which adds to the comedy of the former. We all have a time in our lives when we wake up and realise that you may be ready for some Bavarian bike branded boots, but i say embrace it, walk tall (literally) and give a GS a go. Most will be very surprised.

Thank you Matt, what an excellent comment! I want a t-shirt that says 'brb... I'm sportsbike bike embarrassing'. It certainly transformed by opinion of adventure bikes. - John

After 30 years of desperately trying to avoid the cliched GS I made the biggest mistake of my life and test rode one while my bike was being serviced. Consequently the serviced bike was never sat on by me again and the new front door and porch had to wait. It's stunning and I think of all the time and money I'd have saved if I tried one a long time ago.

Congratulations on the purchase! I think your scenario of GS discovery is shared by many. They just seem to make so much sense! Happy riding!

Great review, couldn’t help but notice the left mirror was turned at a strange angle

Thanks, Chris! It might be something as simple as the camera position on the helmet. It’s not quite dead centre so it can make certain view points look strange. Thanks for watching!

Nice review but was there a happy ending (purchase)? The 40th anniversary colours are growing on me 👍

Thank you! - It didn't result in a purchase... but let's just say it's been added to the 'wish list'.

1st time watching your channel, thank goodness I found you! Very good work in every way but methinks taking eyes off of road just to read a screen very unhealthy, especially on two wheels!

Welcome aboard! Good point, well made. You're right, ideally, you don't want to take your eyes off of the road, however, the system is very intuitive and quick to learn, so its not too dissimilar to glancing down to change a radio station in the car.
