    Lyrics:
    Flag In The Ground
In the days when lands were few,
And man sometimes had no chance
But sell his soul to his landlord to make a living
    In far and away country,
They gave acres of land away for free,
To all able to claim it
Ships sailed across the great seas,
Fortunes were made and dreams shattered
    Sometimes couples were torn apart,
For all they could afford, was one ticket.
    Leaving my life behind
My young love and the unborn
Only have a lock of her hair
    And burning love inside
After forty work-filled days and sleepless nights,
The sails are lit by the lights of Boston
    And here we go
Off the ship! towards the adventure,
The one to define our lives.
Daily grind and a tiny room.
    I got here safe, love.
I have an address, until spring, then I shall race for the land,
Hope to hear from you soon
    Her letter reads
Please let me know everything's alright
Thinking about you, though you're out of sight
Every night, when I'm turning in, my tears find me.
Please hurry, dear, come back and rescue me
Now that I have made the dollars we need for the dream.
The best horse I've ever seen,
A carriage and everything I need
I will make my way to the great unknown
Every moment I wish you were here with me now
Please let me know everything's alright
No, I'm not a stranger, among the people in here
Yet I have never felt so alone
At high noon the sound will boom,
And I will start racing for the
    Land we can call home.
    I stuck my
Flag in the ground, screaming 'n shouting,
I've never felt so proud, love!
We are free from eternal serfdom!
I'm gonna bring you home, my light!
Nine, eight, seven, six, counting the days. solo!
Five, four, three, two, together forever! solo!
I made my way into the great unknown
Land by the river, and a new built home.
I am the land and the land is me
Freedom is everything and we are free
I made my way into the great unknown
Land by the river, and a new built home.
Every night, when I'm looking at the full moon rising
I hold you and know that we are free

Py 3.14 I like Jani. I think he was an excellent contributor to the band. The song that he wrote, "my selene" is one of my favorites. But when Jani got arrested the band had to carry on. There is no use harboring a prejudice against SA because they went on without him when it was Jani's fault that he had to leave in the first place. They left on good terms and now we have the band Cains Offering. Two bands making more music that I like. Is Sonata less without him? Thats up to personal opinion. I like their current lineup and think Elias does well. SA has changed so much from their old days that its hard to make any comparison. But bands must evolve. If they did the same thing forever, they would get old. I liken them to the band to Queen. not all of their alums are awesome but they are always innovative.

John Cate It's because there were a lot of Finns who moved to America back in the day for various reasons and most of us have distant relatives overseas, it's a shame that most of us have no clue about their existence, but on the other hand, neither do they. They might not know their roots that well or at all and/or they're not capable of speaking their original language that their ancestors spoke.

Not to sound like too big of a smart alec but this is late 17th or 18th century America. If it were the 1800's you would not look for the lights of Boston. You would instead look for the statue of liberty or ellis island. Both in New York. Also, during the 1800's the steamboat was invented so it would be more likely for there to be one going across the ocean than an old galleon (or comperable wood ship). Finally, putting your flag in the ground like that ceased by the 1800's because by then you had to buy land. Fortunately land in the west was cheap due to the homestead act.

I think the best part of this song is the countdown at 3:25. It builds up the anticipation, and right when you expect to hear "one!", you DON'T hear it. I don't know how to explain it, but it builds up such feeling with the countdown, and lets the rest of the song speak for the "one" you don't hear. I don't know. That's what I get out of it anyways.

The reason this music is so much better than a lot of the music today is because these guys enjoy playing, its not just about a paycheck for them. This is why most of these metal bands are so good. The whole genre is not as demanded as pop, or alternative. They simply play because it is what they enjoy.

I love Sonata Arctica. They will always be one of my favorite bands. This song that they wrote here is about a peasant going to make his own life with his wife. A tremendous hardship at the time. They want to live their own life as individuals. Its July the third and this makes me feel very patriotic. Not because of all the political crap of what America is in the moment, but what its supposed to be. I love freedom and individuality. I love the idea of suffering though problems to find hope. Thank you Sonata. This song is a love-letter to what America is supposed to be.

Guys, if you were true fans of Sonata Arctica you would know a little about their history. They started of as Tricky Beens and played rock/hard rock and changed their name to Tricky Means and still played rock/hard rock and then they changed to Sonata Arctica after a change in the lineup and began to play power metal and got big with the album Unia.

I think it's one of their best albums, and I love their power metal stuff. Deathaura, the last amazing grays, juliet, the dead skin, zeroes, and this song are all amazing.
Then again, I think Unia is their best album, so maybe I'm in the minority.

    Prologue from the album-inlay:
In the days when lands were few, and man sometimes had no
Chance but sell his soul to his landlord to make a living…
In far and away country, they gave acres of land away for free,
To all able to claim it… ships sailed across the great seas,
Fortunes were made and dreams shattered…
    Sometimes couples were torn apart,
For all they could afford… was one ticket

btw, to all of you who wish for more songs like this:
actually, it's old as shit. The original song is from the time before Sonata Arctica, when they called themselves Tricky Beans/Tricky Means, it was called "Black Out" then. Look it up, it had different lyrics, but the music was almost the same...

    Leaving my life behind
My young love and the unborn
Only have a lock of her hair
    And burning love inside
After forty work-filled days and sleepless nights,
The sails are lit by the lights of Boston
    And here we go
Off the ship! towards the adventure,
The one to define our lives.
Daily grind and a tiny room.
    I got here safe, love.
I have an address, until spring, then I shall race for the land,
Hope to hear from you soon
    Her letter reads
Please let me know everything's alright
Thinking about you, though you're out of sight
Every night, when I'm turning in, my tears find me.
Please hurry, dear, come back and rescue me
Now that I have made the dollars we need for the dream.
The best horse I've ever seen,
A carriage and everything I need
I will make my way to the great unknown
Every moment I wish you were here with me now
Please let me know everything's alright
No, I'm not a stranger, among the people in here
Yet I have never felt so alone
At high noon the sound will boom,
And I will start racing for the
    Land we can call home.
    I stuck my
Flag in the ground, screaming 'n shouting,
I've never felt so proud, love!
We are free from eternal serfdom!
I'm gonna bring you home, my light!
Nine, eight, seven, six, counting the days. solo!
Five, four, three, two, together forever! solo!
I made my way into the great unknown
Land by the river, and a new built home.
I am the land and the land is me
Freedom is everything and we are free
I made my way into the great unknown
Land by the river, and a new built home.
Every night, when I'm looking at the full moon rising
I hold you and know that we are free.

In some way that happened with all Sonata Arctica songs with. When a friend of mine told me about this awesome band "Sonata Arctica" I didn't know what to do with it. It was okay but I liked other bands more. But in a very short time, every time I listened to Sonata Arctica I liked it more and more. Today SA is my favorite band by far. They have Lyrics that blow your mind and a sound for every mood.
