My absolute favorite album by the band. And top 5 best albums of all time! "No Forgiveness", "Your Hand in Mine", "Pity the Sadness"! All absolute classics!
It is an awesome album!!!! Great sounding, great songs - it ist my favourite album of Paradise Lost!! 30 Years???? WTF???? Hearing it makes me feel like I'm still 15.....
Loved this album when I was a teenager. 30 years later I shared this masterpeace with my teenage daugther. She loves it, too! Thanks PL for your music!
For years I never cared much for the album, but one day a number of years back it finally clicked with me and now I love it. It has some of the band’s most complicated arrangements and songs. I also adore the acoustic parts in it; something they never really attempted again (but should!) There’s no other Paradise Lost album that sounds like it, which is probably why it took me some time to fully appreciate it.
You're not kidding when you say it has their most "complicated" arrangements. For me, however, that translates to it being inaccessible. I think that, and the production, are why it gets overlooked.
Omg PL Are My Favourite Band Of All.. Love You Guys This One Is A Legend 🤘😎🔥 And Honestly Everything You Do, Every Track, Song, Music And The Great Riffs And Nick's Awesome Talent Genius Vocals..Is Awesome Brutal Unique Magic Killer.. PL You Are Best Ever🤘🔥Thanks For Your Awesome Excellent Work Music Songs, Real Heavy Metal During All Years 🤘🔥🎶🖤🇸🇪
"Shades Of God" (alongside "Gothic") was my entry into Paradise Lost and it will always be one of my favourite albums ever. So many good songs that have unequivocally stood the test of time. Love the artwork too.
Hey Greg , been listening to paradise lost for literally 30 years . Thanks for your magnification music talents and creations . Has a chance to see you live in Toronto about 5 years ago , it was a truly iconic experience . Easily my top metal band and my top Guitarist !🎸🤘🤘🎸!
Shades of God took a while to grow on me, but it's one of the most complex, creative and progressive albums the band has ever made. Some of the riffs and chord progressions are really out of left-field in a way that makes Gothic sound catchier in comparison. Greg's solos are some of his best, like Crying For Eternity and Your Hand in Mine have some of his best work. I also love the bass performance on this album, it's really creative - like the way it contrasts with the opening riff on Pity the Sadness and the lick that comes in between the verses in As I Die. My favourite song overall has got to be Daylight Torn, and I wish the band would play it live again. Congrats on 30 years of one of the best PL albums to date!
I remember when I started high school and met my 1st metal head friend. Went to his house and his step dad had this album CD next to his PC. I remember vividly how the artwork caught my eye. We'd been listening to a lot of Metallica at the time and I was like "hey, let's put this on!". That must have been a good 28/29 years ago that... Loved Paradise Lost ever since that day! 👍 From one Yorkshire man to another, thanks to you guys for making some of the greatest metal in my life Greg! 🤘
It is a great record that I believe was obscured by the previous one and the one after since Gothic and Icon are two of the more classics. But has some pretty good songs in it in my opinion like Pity the Sadness, As I die and No forgiveness. See you in Stockholm in November! :D
I know right? The songs are so weirdly structured with tons of transitions on this album it's instantly become a favourite for me. Experimental and unconventional as it can get. Love it.
I really, truly hope there are plans to commemorate this album live in some way. DT and Gothic both were played live in their entirety, so I hope at least some more tracks from Shades of God enter the setlist again.
Paradise Lost, i just loved Them, best band ever 👍 these guys gave me so many fantastic feelings, memories from the shows and meetings 😁 yes, my absolute favourite band 🤘
This album attracted me to PL forever! I don't remember when exactly, if 2016 or 2018, at Bar da Montanha in Limeira, Brazil, a small gig PL did. I knew the song I was about to ask them to play was not on the list of the tour, but, you know how things go. So, between songs I growled "Mortals Watch The Day", just like the chorus. The finest moment I hold dear was Nick's face as he heard clearly what I just sang, as picking memories from the past. After a brief pause, returning to the presente time he then just replied, politely, with that great voice of his "We're not singing that one tonight". Shades Of God... very very great album!
Superb album and it's the one of theirs I grew up with. I heard As I Die on Headbangers Ball in the early-mid 90s and bought the tape. Many an hour spent through my teenage years listening to that. If it's getting a reissue I'll keep my eye out for the CD.
Haha Tudds on drums! I remember you guys coming into the Railway on Horton St for quiet drinks. That might be where he met Becki. Always a healthy dance floor in the Zoo when PL came on!
Great album. Mortals Watch The Day is a superb track. It's hard to say which tracks I like the most because many are the kind of songs I don't remember unless I hear parts of them, because they're pretty complex, without a standard structure, which always makes it fun to go back to the album and rediscover them.
The American pressing didn't have "As I Die" on it even though the song was listed on the outside and in the liner notes. I had to get the single, which was cool cuz it had that awesome cover of "Death Walks Behind You".
I think you forgot about the Haigh Custom that you played live and on the promo vids throughout the Shades and Icon eras... I dont remember the Hamer Californian appearing until late into the Icon tour and then during Drac Times...
Why don't you guys do few like 15 mins episodes sharing original footage of you recording different albums, also some footage of when you guys first met as a band, rehearsals maybe, like anything old you have ? Would be cool
Sorry to disagree with you, Greg! This is most definitely NOT an overlooked album. As I Die and Pity The Sadness are in there for God's sake, man!!! 💪🤘
I still don't get it why Gothic gets so much praise and Shades of God is somehow considered "transitional" and inbetween Gothic and Icon (which is a nice album but frankly somewhat boring and predictable). This album is absolutely brilliant and the only thing that surpasses it for me personally is Medusa. Shades of God requires multiple insightful listens cause it's a bit unconventional in song structure and isn't as catchy as Icon or Draconian times. But once you dig into it you realise the amount of creativity that's been put into it.
I absolute agree, first album iż classic for me, harsh, pure, film of young emtins. Then we have Gothic, shock and confusion on metal world, and then we have Shades od god which is much more complicated, structures and arragments are so different from previous albums, and still is do uderrated. That is unfair, at least because here They shows how that kind of music can sound like, how in more than 3-4 minutes of the track You can feel and "watch"so many emotions 👍 kong live Paradise Lost 💪🤘🤘🤘
Probably one of my least favorite Paradise Lost albums. Never clicked with me. I revisit it every once in a while to see if I can enjoy it, but haven't had much luck.
How can "Shades Of God" be overlooked, it one of their best albums!
Paradise lost is my medicine to feel good🙏✌️
My absolute favorite album by the band. And top 5 best albums of all time!
"No Forgiveness", "Your Hand in Mine", "Pity the Sadness"!
All absolute classics!
If 'Shades of God' is one of your 5 favorite albums of all time then i definitely would like to know what are the other 4 :)

Great comment
That's cool. Usually teenagers don't like their parent's music.
A true classic!😎🤘

Hi Greg thank You for our conversation in Fabruary on Stoke-On-Trent 😎 it was pleasure to meet you,
Some of their best guitar work is on this album... and that tone! 🎸🔥🤘
The songwriting on this album is amazing.
Damn.. 30 years already... now i feel really old...

Such a huge influence on contemporary metal.
Thank you guys for shaping us and the music we create.
Very nostalgic album for me as it was played a lot when it came out
Its my favorite.
Epic songs and riffs
As i Die and Pity the sadness
I love this album. An overlooked classic indeed.
Thanks a lot Greg! it would be interesting to look at your JayDee guitar.
Coolest band ever! Love you guys so much! Greetings from Ukraine 🤟😎🇺🇦
Wait for your show in Kyiv after our victory!!!
That was my second album I bought after Icon! Huge fan. It’s a fantastic album, I have it on CD and Cassette as well.

^^agreed. Yes, bass performance was very solid on this album. BTW, would love to see Steve show us his gear. 👋
The best album
Solid and clear sound.!!!
Saw them with Sepultura in the SFX in Dublin in December 1993 Chaos AD / Icon tour ..... unbelievable
I love you guys! Really looking forward to see you at Summer Breeze in Germany
Great album, great memories! A vinyl reissue would be really nice 😎
Thank you for the music! My all-time favorite band!
Gothic Metal. 🖤
This album shaped my taste! one of my favourites from my favourite band.
I remember when I started high school and met my 1st metal head friend. Went to his house and his step dad had this album CD next to his PC. I remember vividly how the artwork caught my eye. But has some pretty good songs in it in my opinion like Pity the Sadness, As I die and No forgiveness.
See you in Stockholm in November! :D
Honestly this is my favorite one. The riffs on this make it feel more like a trad doom album but with death metal vocals.
Underrated? Oh my God, me and my whole pack got in love with this album when it came out. Cheers!
I know right? The songs are so weirdly structured with tons of transitions on this album it's instantly become a favourite for me. Experimental and unconventional as it can get. Love it.
One of the best albums ever ❤️
Ma favourite Paradise Lost album without a doubt! Love it from first note to the end!
"Your Hand in Mine" if I have to choose one.
My personal favourite Paradise Lost album I love it and still revisit it every now and again
I really, truly hope there are plans to commemorate this album live in some way. DT and Gothic both were played live in their entirety, so I hope at least some more tracks from Shades of God enter the setlist again.
We need a vinyl reissue!
That era - Gothic/Shades/Icon - to me is favourite, every album is a gem. And Shades with it's original mood is just awesome music for summer)))
The first album i listened. I got hooked. Now they my favourite band of all time!🤘

Awesome Come to Brazil again, we love Paradise Lost since the 90s
Your hand in mine - amazing track. It sent shivers down my spine the first time I heard it. Still does.
I expected the announcement of the 30th Anniversary Shades of God Album. Until I am enjoying At the Mill.

Shades of God definitely needs a remaster and complete live rendition, 'I pray that in the end/Your sense will break though' 😉
Saludos
Hope they would remix and remaster this one just like what they did with Draconian Times...
You guys influenced our band in more ways than you know..
Vinyl release then??

Looks like he hasn't change strings on that guitar since he recorded that album :P 963rd viewer :P
He didnt use that guitar to record the album - I would love to see the Jaydee Custom he did use though!
