@4:22 - Wireless charging was around on Android phones a long before Apple introduced it onto their iPhones just fyi
Cool bus but ultimately nothing other than a cool display of technology on this occasion, would love to see it in a more advanced scenario such as navigating a typical city route.

On the subject of pressing the stop button by accident. I got on a bus in London once. By the time I got upstairs it pulled off. As I shuffled into my seat the driver hit the breaks. I leant forward and my tummy pressed the bell. I guess I’m in the early stages of automated ‘next stop please’ technology. Just need to perfect the correct stop. The fact my tummy was responsible for a whole double decker to stop without passengers getting on or off was not my proudest moment 🤦‍♂️

A very useful video, thank you. All sorts of questions: 1) How can this system be more cost-effective when it requires lots of expensive kit (which can fail) and an extra member of staff?; 2) if the second staff member’s duty can’t be covered does the bus run in usual manual mode?; 3) if the route is blocked by badly parked vehicles, does the driver attempt to guide the bus through manually?; 4) how do we get you a wind shield for your microphone 😉?

The driver present is because it's essentially a "trial" bus. The driver doesn't drive, he supervises. If the bus decides to do something (run a red light, go straight over a roundabout) the driver is there to correct it...

Great video! I've tried the AB1 too and I'm not convinced. I enjoyed going on the bus but I don't think there are any environmental or cost advantages to autonomous buses. I can't see a day ever when there will be no staff on board and in any case, the cost of the tech is way more than the cost of staff and is likely to be so for a long long time. I just don't see the point. This pilot project itself isn't too expensive but a hell of a lot of money is being spent world-wide on this kind of tech and I think it's all just vapourware and that this is a pointless gadgetbahn. With the climate crisis, we should be investing in conventional buses, trams and trains instead IMHO - we don't have time for sidelines like this.
Are you going to be checking out the Edinburgh tram extension to Newhaven soon?

Stop rather far from the curb, A real driver would pride himself by smallest space between wheel and curb, And I noticed the wipers not responding to the rain like a driver would.
