In this first edition of Cinematography Breakdown I'll be analysing Wally Pfister's cinematography in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight. In detail, I will break down the Imax and 35mm camera setups used to shoot the film, the lighting and grips rigs in specific scenes and provide an overall analysis of the film's visual style, highlighting how the cinematography informs the overall storytelling.

Really good analysis, Everything about it was perfect. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the kind words.
They also used Vista Vision (horizontal 35mm) for certain shots when they didn't have enough IMAX cameras. The main angle of the truck flip was a Vista Vision shot
All of these vids are spectacular. Thank you IDC :)
Thanks!
Love how you do these breakdowns. I just spend about an hour watching your channel. You're really keeping it interesting from start to finish, without rushing through the subject matter. Keep it coming! 👏👏
Mate you do such a great job. I really look forward to your videos. Perfect for a captivated audience looking for simplest connections between what they're seeing and the cinematographer/director's intentions.
Absolutely love that you had all the information on the cameras, lights and lenses used. Awesome vid
As a mostly one-man-band, mostly mirrorless camera user, I sometimes feel like I know what I’m doing. Then I see something like this and realize how much I don’t know 😂 Thanks for the in depth breakdown. I don’t ever plan to shoot on film, but seeing this side of things is extremely interesting.
Wishing you the best for this channel. Loved this analysis. Im not a cinematography student, just a film fan from India. but it was pretty comprehensible. Keep up the good work.
This is the only youtube channel I have seen that basically has no dislikes.
So glad i found your channel, fantastic work!
All your videos are very informative. I’m so glad i found your channel. Keep up 👍
Incredible video analysis with all the essential technical tools explained. ⚡🔥🔥
Great stuff as usual, I learned a tremendous amount about camera tech from this one!
You really deserve more views becuase these videos are both high quality and entertaining
That is a really insightful and informative analysis. Excellent work. I have a request, kindly make a video on Inception and a video on The Dark Knight Rises separately. Both the movies are visually breathtaking.
I'm new to this channel and I must say, if your videos are even half as good as this one, I'm going to be a very frequent and happy viewer. Keep up the good work!
All videos are great, very appreciated :D
wow your explanation is awesome 🥰
Holy shit, so in depth/detailed. Love it, well done. You got a sub.
thanks you for good and well explained .

Thank you very much for such useful videos.
amazing work
Really enjoying your content.
Glad you liked it. Hope it's educational
I really enjoyed this one✨🖤🎬
Can you do one of David Fincher's movie
Will put it on the list of future videos.
Good suggestion bhayyaji ❤️
Glad I found this channel
Very nice! If I may, they added a complimentary magenta/green color grade to many of the scenes. Some very subtle.
Great Work! Danke sehr!
Would love to see one of HEAT. Since it greatly inspired The Dark Knight.
Thank you, friend! As always inspiring and entertaining! Just one question: how do you get your info for the specific set ups? Like what light or lense they would be using in certain scenes ? Best wishes!
Oh you THINK it was due to the tone 😆 love your channel 🙌
when is it appropriate to create a "sun sandwich" I notice this often and it popped into my head when I saw the shot of Alfred reading Rachel's letter at the breakfast table.
Great video as always! Love your channel.
As for a video suggestion, maybe you can make an analysis on Stanley Kubrick's Films? Each one has such a unique style and yet all of them still use very similar techniques.
Good suggestion.
@@InDepthCine thanks!
Really great knowledge.
SO GOOD!!!!!
This channel reminds me Every Frame a Painting!
Well done, I really liked your calm, in-depth analysis.
Maybe you could do one about Blade Runner 2049, an underrated film in my opinion.
True. 2049 was in no way a let down. Great film.
I hugely respect Hoyte van Hoytema ever since 'Let the right one in' (and both Dunkirk and Ad Astra are astounding), but I do miss Wally Pfister's *even more* naturalistic style in Nolan's films (perhaps with the exception of Dukirk where the sepia-greenish tone fits the film better)
Let the right one in was greg fraiser tho
@@gary-fl7hm i mean the original one by Tomas Alfredson
@@patrickljaimes ahh fair play
Great analysis! Could you please name the soundtrack of your video? It's amazing!
Wally pfister is such a great dp,
And he is missed very much by filmmaking, as he is not doing dp anymore,
He is. Just not feature films. He's working in the commercial world.
@@pogoprofilms yes the reset content of wally pfister is so good, but hoping to see his work on big screen again
Jeez I was just watching this last night and thinking about how much I enjoyed it visually. Never knew they used Imax. I'm really starting to love ultra wide film.
Hi, great video! For the party scene with the Joker, might you know if the camera was completely handheld or did they use some sort of gimbal to provide both stability and movement?
good content. thank you so much
Glad you enjoyed it.
So they shot some on IMAX and then put black bars to give a constant look to the film. *But is it just Christopher Nolan's or Wally Pfister's personal selection to not to seprate them by bars in Dark knight rises?*
Which has become director's signature in every of his future projects as well.
The dark knight does have some scenes where the aspect ratio extends. It's just not shown in this video
At Imax cinemas the DI or print of The Dark Knight that was screened cut between both the native Imax 1.43:1 aspect ratio and 2.40:1 anamorphic. But for standard theatre releases they cropped the Imax negative to get a 2.40:1 aspect ratio. This footage is taken from the standard cinema release version, hence it's all 2.40:1.
Generally though Nolan prefers to use the whole Imax negative, which is why you see cutting between different aspect ratios in some of his films.
@@InDepthCine and the IMAX scenes open up to the 1.78:1 ratio in order to fill up the TV home screen. Why didn't you use that instead when talking about the IMAX stuff? Just wondering. Great video BTW. I saw it in my suggestions and thought I was dreaming when I saw you breaking down the cinematography of my favorite film :)
@@nireviews8492 Exactly. Thanks. I had a 2.40:1 copy of the film so used it.
@@InDepthCine I hate that. Different aspect ratios takes away from the experience IMO
A video about The Haunting of Hillhouse would be so cool :D
Instant sub
Thanks for the sub
@@InDepthCine For sure! This is quality content
What do you think about the documentary Baraka by Ron Fricke and Todd-AO format. Thanks anyway.
Perfect.....
Can you do "Apocalypse now" or a Wes Anderson film? Life Aquatic?
I just found your channel yesterday and have subscribed. Can you please do this type of video on the film OldBoy (2003)
Thanks for watching and for the suggestion!
I would love a breakdown of Dunkirk!
Thanks for the suggestion! In the mean time I made a video on the cinematography of Hoyte Van Hoytema if you're interested: czcams.com/video/uxHtZG8okPo/video.html
Can you do a video on david lean specially lawrence of Arabia and bridge on the river kwai....keep up the good work!!!
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll definitely have to do a video on an older classic film soon.
Would you be able to do a breakdown for Mad Max Fury Road?
look, im far from an expert on film, but how can 70mm be 9 times of 35mm???
because 35x2= 70
damn! this one is wide as hell! =)
Dee-lish! Very well made, thank you.
The content is really good but why do you have to use music that sounds like some died ?
V FOR VENDETTA
In depth cine = cinema porn
Idk i find wally pfister's cinematography to be completely unremarkable. Greig fraser i believe will do a much better job
stuff all your ads google
