Which was their right to own slaves 2. The average confederate soldier didn’t own slaves. They aspired to or would have if they could afford them. No, he wanted God to sort it out and it was Gods plan to enslave them. Plus, the free labour allowed him to pay his debts and keep his estate. General Lee knew the folly of the confederacy, but he still led hundreds of thousands of Americans to their deaths. He’s no hero. 4. The South was going to end slavery on its own in good time. slavery was the cornerstone of the confederacy and there is no proof of such plans. 5. It was charitable to enslave black people and they were happy. Setting them free and reconstruction led to their poverty today. Slavery is so wonderful let’s blame the black people and the wicked North instead of Jim Crow laws. 6. It was about economics It sure was! The farmers loved that free labour. 7. They were fighting to protect the constitution which allowed secession. There is nothing written in the constitution which allows its own destruction. When the constitution was signed by all thirteen colonies, they became one indivisible nation. The United States. 8. Lincoln didn’t care about abolition and would have kept slavery to preserve the Union. It was just his excuse to justify the war. Lincoln knew all too well and advocated abolition was the only way forward. Imagine if he had to enforce slavery on free states, re enslaving black people? Thats not unification and is some serious oppression. Ludicrous! In the land of the free everyone had to be free. It’s just that simple and he made it quite clear. What else can I add here? Lincoln believed white people are superior to blacks, that blacks should not be able to vote or hold office, and that blacks and whites could not co-exist. He "freed slaves" without having any constitutionally granted authority to do so, and only slaves in states that did not recognize his authority as POTUS anyway. PS- the 13th Amendment didn't end slavery either. It constitutionalized slavery; legalized a form of it via its punishment clause.

Honestly, I expected more wisdom in this video. You didn't present any arguments on why your stance on the LGBTQ+ movement is right and his position is wrong. His stance on homosexuality is not driven by what he is against but rather by what he is for. Alan (as a catholic) believes that sexual intercourse is something sacred that should be protected through the Holy Sacrament of Matrimony. This Holy Sacrament is instituted by God for the procreation of children. If a person believes that the only true fulfillment in life is following Christ and his commandments, he would want that for everyone. You may not believe that, but that's not the point; the point is that he is consistent in his views on homosexuality, and it is an act of love to oppose people who practice sodomy.

I have neither defended nor referred to anyone. I am commenting about the fact that you think the Civil War was about slavery. It wasn't. It was about the government's greed and profit of its local agriculture. How crops were harvested was the responsibility of the farmer who took advantage of slavery laws to do so. Without those laws, the cost of harvest would increase exponentially. By the way, just move on. I thought pipe smoking was only for adults, yet the criticisms set forth here in the comments primarily resort to name-calling like children in a schoolyard. I originally really liked the Pipe Cottage videos, but when they strayed to the topic of politics--starting with the statement that he moved from South Carolina to Kentucky for political reasons--he lost me. I understand how Southerners continue to deny the cause of the Civil War and couch it in terms of States' rights (I mean the States' rights they're talking about are being able to continue to keep and own slaves, but sure - not about slavery) because they have to continue to cling to the idea that their beliefs are good and denial is the ultimate form of rationalization. They want to continue to fly the Confederate flag as a symbol of "freedom against tyranny" (I think that's what one of the commenters here said), while ignoring the fact that the ultimate tyranny is owning another human being as property. Yet, they will also probably decry anyone who kneels, or refuses to salute, the stars and stripes of the American flag as unpatriotic, while the Confederate flag was flown by states that literally seceded from those United States in order to create an independent nation. Taking a knee is one thing, but secession is quite another!

I’m an atheist and I disagree with Alan’s religious views. I also disagree with some of his social views. I support the LGBTQ community, but to accuse him of being a white supremacist is a stretch. I have watched all of his content. Certainly slavery was a huge part of the civil war, but it was much more than that. Cancel culture solves nothing. It only divides us more and makes sensible dialogue impossible. I respect your views and am happy to discover another progressive pipe smoker. 6. It was about economics

7. They were fighting to protect the constitution which allowed secession.

He "freed slaves" without having any constitutionally granted authority to do so, and only slaves in states that did not recognize his authority as POTUS anyway.
PS- the 13th Amendment didn't end slavery either. It constitutionalized slavery; legalized a form of it via its punishment clause.

Honestly, I expected more wisdom in this video. You didn't present any arguments on why your stance on the LGBTQ+ movement is right and his position is wrong. His stance on homosexuality is not driven by what he is against but rather by what he is for. Alan (as a catholic) believes that sexual intercourse is something sacred that should be protected through the Holy Sacrament of Matrimony. This Holy Sacrament is instituted by God for the procreation of children. If a person believes that the only true fulfillment in life is following Christ and his commandments, he would want that for everyone. You may not believe that, but that's not the point; the point is that he is consistent in his views on homosexuality, and it is an act of love to oppose people who practice sodomy.

The irony of someone that is pro LGBTQ+ complaining discrimination isn't lost on me. They named their organization PRIDE, a deadly sin, and stole the rainbow flag which for all of history up till the LGB take over was recognized as a Christian symbol. The entire organization was set up specifically to mock Christians from name to corporate logo. It is actually crazy if you think about it considering that out of the 3 major religions Christianity is the most lenient towards homosexuality. I have neither defended nor referred to anyone. I am commenting about the fact that you think the Civil War was about slavery. It wasn't. It was about the government's greed and profit of its local agriculture. How crops were harvested was the responsibility of the farmer who took advantage of slavery laws to do so. Without those laws, the cost of harvest would increase exponentially. By the way, just move on. I thought pipe smoking was only for adults, yet the criticisms set forth here in the comments primarily resort to name-calling like children in a schoolyard. I originally really liked the Pipe Cottage videos, but when they strayed to the topic of politics--starting with the statement that he moved from South Carolina to Kentucky for political reasons--he lost me. I understand how Southerners continue to deny the cause of the Civil War and couch it in terms of States' rights (I mean the States' rights they're talking about are being able to continue to keep and own slaves, but sure - not about slavery) because they have to continue to cling to the idea that their beliefs are good and denial is the ultimate form of rationalization. They want to continue to fly the Confederate flag as a symbol of "freedom against tyranny" (I think that's what one of the commenters here said), while ignoring the fact that the ultimate tyranny is owning another human being as property. Yet, they will also probably decry anyone who kneels, or refuses to salute, the stars and stripes of the American flag as unpatriotic, while the Confederate flag was flown by states that literally seceded from those United States in order to create an independent nation. Taking a knee is one thing, but secession is quite another!

I’m an atheist and I disagree with Alan’s religious views. I also disagree with some of his social views. I support the LGBTQ community, but to accuse him of being a white supremacist is a stretch. I have watched all of his content. Certainly slavery was a huge part of the civil war, but it was much more than that. Cancel culture solves nothing. It only divides us more and makes sensible dialogue impossible. I respect your views and am happy to discover another progressive pipe smoker. I will continue to support Alan by watching his content, which I enjoy. I also look forward to more of your content as well.
@MrBassTV Cancel culture has always been part of cultural society. In the past it would take a little more time and often would be quite violent. Today, if you want to say somthing like the civil war had nothing to do with slavery (against what is proven fact) and keep trying to prove it unsuccessfully, resort to name calling and bullying to prove your point, you’re n fact going to become unpopular. Spew your hateful opinions for all to see, you’ll get blow back. If you’re tired of cancel culture, you also don’t respect freedom. Freedom of speech allows it, but you know what? It lets us know who the dipshits are and we can avoid them and we can sure as hell speak up and protest against them. You don’t like cancel culture? If you’re American, vote Trump he’ll be a dictator for you and he’ll kill off all those that attempt to cancel him. See how that works.
As far as I’m concerned and you are not the first person to complain to me about it, but those that cry cancel culture are hurt and have nowhere to complain when society throws out the trash.
As for the white supremacy Alan has been spoon fed lies his whole he’s said Academia is going down the drain and he’s leaving teaching. You should ask him why? It’s because he’s been slayed by his peers and anyone that runs around defending the Confederacy, like they were just a bunch of good old boys fighting for states rights and were justified in fighting for the constitution, is purely a fabrication by those who wanted to hide the fact they raised their flag and got 600,000 or their countryman killed to keep chattel slavery. Not just to keep it, but to make Slavery the Cornerstone of the Confederacy.
Alan, can keep saying it all day long and he’ll be cancelled by those that know what he’s up too and the rest will be duped by him.

Alan teaches at Liberty University. You might want to look into who they are since you are so pro-lgbtq and atheist. He hasn’t publicly said anything racist, but he has done everything he can to excuse the white supremacy of others. It’s a thing smart racists always do. Its moves the Overton window while shielding them from criticism
