Interesting movie. The producers could have used better actors and body doubles for the dancing (like in Black Swan) but instead chose to cast professional dancers which I think makes this a better movie than the alternative. Dancers live interesting lives; they train from a tiny age and most will never earn back what they spent on classes and equipment, but they do it anyway for their art.

Whilst no longer a professional dancer - I started out dancing primarily to help me be a better figure skater and it turned into a love of dance as well as performance in dramatic productions - and it has been a while since I danced on the stage or in classes, I have very strong and fond memories of dancing and understand why the director chose to find individuals with an authentic background in dance wherever possible before he focused on their abilities as actors.
As you mentioned, dancers - and this includes ice skaters who also study classical ballet and typically other forms of ballet and dance to help them with techniques, flexibility, grace and stamina on the ice - specifically dancers who are focused upon doing their very best and who have a real passion for dance will inevitably spend money that would otherwise be able to pay for a University education over many, many years on the cost of classes and, for female dancers especially, for pointe shoes. The classes range for classical ballet are divided into specialty areas such a barre work, variations, pas de deux, stretching and pilates, and then many dancers often will take classes in jazz and contemporary. Most dancers once they're in their mid to late teens will be dancing for about 6 hours - if not more - per day and they'll undertake a variety of classes every day and for years until they either retire due to injury and/or age-related issues and/or because they've recognised they're not going to get beyond being in the corps de ballet and want to do something else as was the case with Zoe Saldana who plays Eva Rodriguez in this movie - she loved ballet but said she didn't have "the feet" and was too ambitious to remain in a corps: the feet remark is ironic when one considers that in "Center Stage" it's Amanda's Schull's character who longingly says she wishes she had Eva's feet! Certainly, Zoe Saldana made a wise decision and she was wonderful as Eva Rodriguez and then as Nyota Uhura in the rebooted movies of "Star Trek" as well as Neytiri in "Avatar" plus as Gamora ni "Guardians of the Galaxy": she certainly seems to have been a good dancer but her films to date show her to be a very talented actress.
Anyway, the financial cost of ballet dancing is a hefty one and considering the enormous competition for positions in ballet companies and the fact that there's only so many such companies plus the fact that ballet dancers typically have a short career in terms of years as dancers - especially since injurie are not only common an unfortunately often to e expected but can set back a dancer's career considerably if not destroy kit completely - and it's clear that those who stick with ballet do so because they're passionate about dancing. They certainly don't dance because of the income, especially as they tend to earn what's really close to a minimum wage in most cases when one takes out the expenses mentioned from the income dancers receive.
For Center Stage's director to deliberately elect to first look for genuine ballet dancers - and one figure skater in the case of Ilia Kulik because he, like any good ice skater, has to train in ballet to help with skating - meant they could more authentically portray dancing technique, the mindset of dancers fiercely focused on becoming soloists or principals, and critically who could also convey the various issues dancers experience within the ballet world such as eating disorders, drug use - in Center Stage it's limited to cigarettes but the use of opioids and various stimulants like cocaine - as seen in the 2015 Starz series "Flesh and Bone" which Sascha Radetsky also starred in - is rife in the ballet world. The pressure of 'stage mums' or dance mums, in this case, is a very real one and so is the fact that the majority of male dancers aren't heterosexual making for quite fierce competition amongst female dancers for a dancer as a romantic partner. Choosing individuals who first come from a background in dance and/or who at least danced throughout their teenage years even if they gave it up to focus on acting meant that the dancers could much more authentically express these issues both emotionally and behaviourally.
Actual ballet dancers are better equipped to portray the many problematic issues of the ballet world than actors alone would be. We see this with the mix of anorexia nervosa and bulimia such as that expressed by the character of Maureen Cummings and the focus on the weight and shape of female dancers via comments made by Cumming's character and her mother in the movie who expresses another very common issue in the ballet world, that of stage mothers or 'dance mums'. Even the frequent lighting of cigarettes in Center Stage is - or used to be (!) - an accurate representation of habits amongst dancers and drug use and abuse ids also rife although Center Stage didn't show this - the series "Flesh and Bone", however, did what with the use of opioids by dancers to help them dance through injuries. Gelsey Kirkland is one infamous example of a dancer resorting to drugs like cocaine, among others, to help her through performances but it continues to this day amongst many ballet dancers. The pressure of "dance mums" is also very real and so is the fact heterosexual male dancers tend to be in the minority so there's often fierce competition between the female dancers.
Choosing actual dancers for center Stage was a wise decision because they understand all of these issues intimately whether they have experienced one or more of these themselves or they know other dancers who have. Personally, I preferred figure skating to the world of classical ballet because of these issues from the stage mothers who seemed to predominate amongst the parents of many ballet students and whilst in skating one does need to be graceful and to have good lines there's less pressure upon one's weight than in classical ballet where it's very intense and unhealthily so. There's also less abuse of drugs and whilst eating disorders do exist in the skating world, this isn't nearly as common as in ballet. I loved dance but in the end I came to prefer jazz ballet, in part because of the music and also because of the greater freedom in terms of routines which became even more evident when beginning classes in contemporary dance. This is a little bit like the scene where Schull's character enrols in a jazz class and sees Ethan Stiefel's character turning up there and they dance a routine to "Higher Ground" by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers Anyway, my reply to you has turned into an essay but you're quite right about both the wise choice in having actual dancers selected for the roles and in respect to the fact that dancers who dedicate their young lives to ballet do so because they're passionate about dancing!

If you or anyone here wants an actual dance movie with actual dancers like this movie rather than a psychological thriller with some dancing in it like 'Black Swan' (yes Portman trained hard and well for a year, no-one's denying her dedication to her role, but acknowledging that she did ultimately have a body double for a lot of the things you can't learn in a year isn't taking anything away from her years work), then I'd recommend 'The Red Shoes' from 1948 and 'Carmen' from 1983 (Flamenco movie rather than ballet movie granted but the principle's the same), not to be confused with the movie of the opera released around the same time.

@@agenttheater5 No is denying she worked hard the problem was she accepted an award while making the public think she learned to become a prima ballerina in 9 months. It's misleading to people that you can dance on your toes in 9 months. The technique used in black swan you don't learn until you reach level 5, 6, 7 in ballet. I started dance at a late age, 8, by then the girls my age were doing pre-pointe. My teacher knew I was dedicated and I did four classes a week to catch up to the girls my age. At 13 I was able to do pointe. You can't just get up in pointe shoes with little training because you can break your ankle. You have to do a minimum of 3 years of ballet with 3 classes a week to build strong feet and ankles and muscles in order to do pointe work. My friend danced at another school and one of the girls in her class broke her ankle in pointe shoes, she wasn't ready for pointe work.

@@vanessaebony529 Some people acted like Sarah Lane ruined her chances by calling out the producers and publicists of the movie for acting like Natalie Portman did most of the dancing, I always felt her annoyance was justified, as was the annoyance of any other ballet dancer who criticised that part of the movie.

This was one of the first DVDs I owned back in 2000 along with X-Men, Coyote Ugly, American Beauty, and Bring It On. I've been watching it a lot lately because I'm writing my own movie about a ballet dancer. Hopefully I get it sold in the indie film market within the next year or so.
