This became my favourite song the moment I first heard it. Responsible for pulling me out of suicidal depression and for getting me away from an extremely toxic relationship. "Ever thought from here on in, your life begins and all you knew was wrong?" that's the lyric that fixed me, nice one Steve.
I can't claim that it did influence my life. But this song is something else. There is much music that is very well done, or one of its kind, or one could claim really spiritual.
But when I hear this... even in its lyrical simplicity, its seemingly easy to explain structure... it feels so important. Special. Like a message, or maybe a destilled emotion, some kind of *meaning*, from another point of view, another world, another *possibility*. Even without trying to understand the meaning of the lyrics. Literal shivers and stuck breath.

@@Silber7 Well said - You can feel the song on a deep, instinctive level rather than an intellectual level. Somehow, the melodies and overall structure just work perfectly. This applies to many PT and SW solo songs.

I've had the same experience with this song and I can't quite say i'm out to the other side of the whole depression thing yet this song brilliantly captured my feelings during the time I needed to hear it the most and it's so important to me for that reason. Love when music just strikes you at the perfect time and place. Cosmic randomness at its finest :)
what an amazing way to interpret those lyrics. I always took it as a shock like hey, what you know is wrong... everything is different now. How will you deal? Scary! But your inerpretation is amazing. I love that people can take such colorful and amazing things from a song and they're all so different.
Fun fact: Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth wrote the second solo, the one after the heavy part
Came here to say that :) seeing how these two great reactors love their Opeth. More PT would be incredible, I love seeing your reactions to this incredible band! Way Out Of Here (live in Tilburg) or Hatesong (live in Chicago) will have you scratching your head as to how can these people be this talented.

The singer, Steven Wilson , has a solo career that is incredible. You NEED to watch ( the actual official video!!!!) For "Routine".... bring a box of tissues. Especially if you have kids.

@@IvanRandomDude it's the hallmark of a progressive musician to never do the same stuff over and over again. SW is progressing. His new album might be pop, but it's still progressive. His really old stuff (before _In Absentia_ ) wasn't necessarily heavy either.

They've been around for a long time, but I only first heard of them about two years ago. Every time I hear a song by them I'm blown away.. I heard this song for the first time just now, and tears popped out of my eyes. Their latest released single, Harridan, is also fantastic. I've been listening to prog since I was a teenager in the mid-'70's, and Porcupine Tree reminds me of the days when I found listening to newly discovered music a great adventure that repeatedly blew my mind.

I live in Bulgaria in Eastern Europe and I had the chance and the pleasure to watch Steven Wilson in Bratislava in February 10, 2019. Then once they reunited with PT I flew to Vienna to watch them. The two best gigs that I have ever been in my life!

I've never heard of this band but it sure does sound like Pink Floyd Beautiful af.
When PT originally started, Steven Wilson tried to fill in the space that Pink Floyd left. And he then realized they should do their own thing after a while. And then it got all prog metal in 2002 after he Produced 3 Opeth albums and the keyboardist Richard Barbieri thought Gavin Harrison should replace their previous drummer Chris Maitland, who either left or Steven fired him because, well, he was just ok...

Glad you got around to checking this out. Not only my favorite song from PT (or SW) but also simply one of the absolute best songs all around. Just a masterpiece and this live version is fantastic. Love the little ambient guitar swell solo at the end. Plenty more to check out from both live shows. Way Out Of Here is great, as is Fear of a Blank Planet.

This is a band I definitely need to hear more from. Every time I've caught something from them it's been really impressive. I put on "Fear of a Blank Planet" once and just sat there without other distractions listening to it. Such an incredible soundscape, like you're just in a completely other place. I often let it play in the background while I'm doing other stuff.
