- I consider the entire 2-CD set an essential addition to your music library.
From Cornell 1964 LP [Blue Note]
Catalog#: 0946 3 92210 2 8
Band lineup:
Bass -- Charles Mingus
Drums -- Dannie Richmond
Piano -- Jaki Byard
Alto Saxophone -- Eric Dolphy
Tenor Saxophone -- Clifford Jordan
Trumpet -- Johnny Coles
Hands down the Epitome of JAZZ music, no, MUSIC ever produced.
Solos are UNREAL. Johnny, Jaki, Clifford, CHARLIE, and then wait for it, finally, ERIC DOLPHY.
Extra extended version before a live college audience. Ensemble improvs within the framework of the arrangement modules only possible because this band was so tight and led by Mingus. Virtuoso musicianship!
Pure Eric Dolphy bass clarinet tour-de-force throughout this stretched out saga.
Great music from some real legends. Clifford Jordan is underrated.
I agree, @jay1beaux . Clifford Jordan is sadly underrated. I also think Jaki Byard deserves more credit as a pianist...
1964 was a magical year for this band. Right before Dolphy went out in his own, the group did an amazing tour in Europe, much of which is available on CZcams. If you like Cornell - it’s great - check out Europe.
This version quotes just about every song out there.
The way they all play off of each other and still keep true to the song is nothing short of amazing, truly some of the best musicians who ever were.
As with Wes Montgomery, one gets maximum groove and depth, swing with a Mingus group.
Glad to find this, thanks, there aren't a lot of "Fables of Faubus" online from '64 tour. I added to youtube playlist and discography, search "mingus dolphy 1964 tour" Or just click on my name to get to mingus playlists.
I love any recording with Dolphy on bass clarinet.
Amazing!
Probably Ted Curson on Trumpet, Jaki Byard, Mingus, Dannie Richmond. With the before mentioned Clifford Jordan and Eric Dolphy
Happy Birthday, Eric Dolphy!
wow, thanks. this is a gem!
the best live recording I listened, Right Now, found it in sales. I don't remember the line up but that day, they were all in fire. An, more than underrated, almost unknown pianist, Jane Getz (nothing to do with Stan), she played impressively.
I agree and Johnny Coles, too
where is the bass clarinet on E.Dolphy ?... ^^ (in the description)

True
Where was this performance? Bailey Hall ? Willard Strait?
The general consensus is Bailey Hall though nobody really knows for certain.
