Etalyx could be standing directly in front of me punching me over and over again in the gut and responding to anything I say, and I still wouldn't be entirely convinced that he wasn't just a soundboard.
I've said this before and I'll say it again, in some of these it's clearly the game's fault that he failed the QTEs. If you go to the steam page for the game you can find people in the reviews complaining about the QTE's when you play with a mouse. The game is so badly made that nobody realized the sensitivity is absurdly low in some QTEs so they're practically impossible to pull off.
On top of that, I think it actually might be on purpose. It really feels this time around that the game REALLY wants certain parts of the story to play out a certain way, and only _barely_ gives the player any ability to change those outcomes in particular, and it seems to give that tiny bit almost begrudgingly. Like "Ok, FINE, I'll give the players a chance, I GUESS," and it only gives them a sliver of a chance so that they *technically* have some control. Specifically when the professor gets killed at the end, that felt like the game WANTED that to happen.
@@joshriley2936 The sudden deaths at the end when it throws seemingly random characteristics in your face you "failed to improve" is so cheap. @@mr.kittysavestheworld695 Yeah, exactly! The game is trying to create the illusion of giving the players a significant amount of influence and choice, but it really just funnels them down certain ways and tells them it happened because of their choices, when really those choices barely had any effect on the outcome or those choices were shots in the dark in an absence of any certainty that the game chooses to punish them for.
I don't think QTE are necessarily bad, Detroit is all QTEs and it's not as frustrating as this game seem to be. The problem with QTEs is difficulty, you can't make "hard" QTEs it just feels frustrating and cheap so that's why choices should matter more than individual QTEs in these games.
The problem with QTEs isn't about difficulty, it's that they're often used as a replacement for gameplay. One could certainly argue they have their place in games as a way to add variety, or give the player a break, like in the older God of War games, but they should never be the only thing in your game. QTEs serve as a way to give the player a sense of control over what is otherwise an entirely scripted cinematic moment. If your game is nothing but QTEs, then your game is nothing but cutscenes, i.e., a movie.

I've read recently made comments that go into detail on this game and looked some stuff up for good measure. Those words you see pop up sometimes when demons kill a character are Locked Traits. They start off Unlocked and not taking affect (afaik), but If you mess up vital QTEs they become Locked, reducing the time you have to complete QTEs AND making your cursor slower. The more characters die, the easier it is for more characters to die to a bullshit degree. Jerma did legitimately mess up the QTEs earlier, but closer to the end I don't blame him for messing up. You can even hear him taking wide sweeps with the mouse with one of the later deaths and he STILL couldn't make it to where he needed to be. It's not that the game is buggy (at least not this much), it's just there's some stupid design choices at play.
@@Manglet762 you don't get locked traits from screwing up qte's, you get them by picking dialogues that make you look like an asshole (if you have too many locked traits by the end of the game, your character gets instakilled, BUT there is a chance for you to "break" your locked traits, saving them)

@@Manglet762Just to point out, it's the dialogue choices that lead to the locked traits, not failing QTEs. You generally have to pick the needlessly aggressive / condescending options in order to gain them. In addition, each character has to choose to confront their demon alone, or else they'll be killed at the end. There was an update in the end of 2022 which changed the way QTEs work and adds difficulty options. However I played KB+M both pre and post update and neither playthrough did any of my characters die to a QTE (although Angela and John died to choices in my blind run). Even before the update, you can adjust mouse sensitivity in the settings. You also could replace some of the mouse QTEs with A,S,D,W instead (although the crosshair ones would still be done with the mouse). This is what I did, and it was much more of a fair playthrough. Post update, it works like it does in House of Ashes. Left and right mouse button QTEs (which are a lot easier) and the aiming works like House of Ashes too.
