@@asenka11 Mark is the founder of the band, the rhythm guitarist and main growler and songwriter (and yes he has a great charisma, very cool guy), but in this particular performance, the lead guitarist Isaac Delahaye helped out with growls a little bit :) I love it because Isaac's growls are a bit deeper than Mark's, so if you pay attention, right after that crazy fast black metal part, you can notice how they complement each other.
I said Mark is the main songwriter/composer but actually most band members contribute to songwriting. 4 of the 6 band members have degrees in music and they can even write score for a whole orchestra. Amazing! Simone writes about 50% of all their lyrics.
The keyboardist is Coen Janssen, and yes, the keyboard is on rails :)
You need to watch many songs from the 10th anniversary of the band in 2013. It was called Retrospect and it's 3 hours long. Simone was pregnant at the time but she did a great job. Please, react to much more Epica! They will blow your mind. From really heavy headbangers to wonderful ballads that can make you cry (maybe). They also have a few songs that are a bit more mainstream-friendly, such as Storm the Sorrow (also very cool video).
I posted a couple suggestions with links below your other comment :)

Epica definitely does tour the US - I've seen them several times - and they are fantastic in concert. It is well worth your time and money to go see them next time they come around near you. That said, you're correct that they don't play the same size venues in the US that they do in Europe - symphonic (and prog and power) metal just doesn't seem to be as popular here unfortunately. The silver lining of it is that you can get a chance to get close to the stage and see them in a very intimate setting. I've definitely seen them play shows in the 500-1000 person range.

Another versatile singer whos been everywhere and helped out everyone in Dutch scene is Marcela Bovio (Elfonia, Stream of Passion, MaYaN, Dark Horse White Horse) featured on 5 Ayreon albums, Vuur, ReVamp, Epica backings

Epica took their name off the sixth album by the band Kamelot, which just happens to have Simone's husband Oliver Palotai on Keyboards. She sang co-vocals with Kamelot's original lead singer Roy Kahn on the track 'The Haunting (Somewhere in Time)'.
Simone was originally the girlfriend of the growling singer Mark Jansen and was brought into the band by him after they had been practicing the high/low combinations together.

I love Simone! I heard that she likes her name pronounced with the "e" at the end - like Aphrodite. The other way, she said "Sounds like a German calling for Simon"... She knows the best dirty jokes! Yes! Commanding "the wall of death"! Shout out the drummer Arien van Weesenbeek - hitting things since he was 3 years old - cutlery against furniture to begin with and THEN he found his dad's drumkit! Coen is the keyboard player - great guy! Love his impromptu screams! Mark Jansen (no relation to Floor) is the guitarist/growler. He was in After Forever with Floor and was Simone's boyfriend for a while. Have a look at "Chasing The Dragon" by Epica, live at Retrospect!? The name "Epica" was taken from the title of a Kamelot album - and Simone is married to Kamelot's keyboard player, Oliver Palotai. Metal is Family!

Simone is a goddess :) Incredible singer (she also writes lyrics for about 50% of Epica songs) and she's also unbelievably beautiful woman (even girls say that, lol).
The "angel and demon" thing is actually called "beauty and the beast", the concept that originated in gothic metal. Epica often use this duality of good and evil, light and darkness, etc. Some people don't get it and they say they don't listen to Epica because they don't like growls... Mark Jansen does both death metal growls and black metal screams.
It can remind you Nightwish a little bit because both bands are in the symphonic metal sub-genre :) They are similar but in some respects also very different.

Floor and Simone are very close in terms of being able to sing in different placements. They in fact had the same vocal instructor a woman by the name of Amanda Somerville you can check her out in the bands such as Aina, HDK, Kiske/Somerville, Trillium and the multi female fronted symphonic rock super group by the name of Exit Eden.
Simone adjusts her pack depending on the level of volume/height she is about to sing in, the higher up she sings the lower she puts its. The lower the volume/height the more it gets turned up.

    • @impugnu7852
      @impugnu7852 Před 2 lety

Well, Amanda might served as a vocal coach (aka 'Talking mirror'), but that's very different from being a singing teacher: she didn't "teach" either of them different placements. In fact she wasn't even in Europe when Floor and Simone got their education. The main vocal teacher of Floor was Edward Hoepelman of the Fontys Conservartory, Simone attended several programs at local music schools, but no formal education at the conservatory level.

IIRC: Floor and Simone used to be room mates, Epica was named after the Kamelot album, THEN Epica used to open FOR Kamelot while Simone guested on songs on The Black Halo (check out "The Haunting"), Floor sang with Kamelot a couple times when she was in After Forever, they're really all connected, but definitely each their own thing.

@@AkelasanAK Even though Kingdom of Heaven is my favourite Epica song and is superior to CoT for me I think most people suggest this one because of the quality of the live version. Sadly KoH does not have a proper live video to react to, hopefully that'll change if they release the Omega Alive version. Also CoT is the song they finish the shows with most of the time, it became a classic...but yeah, if I were to choose a song to introduce someone I'd pick Design Your Universe probably.

Epica is awesome, and this is not even their best song, it's just the most popular and what they usually close the show with (except the latest virtual stream). Try Design your Universe live from Retrospect show.
Simone sings in this operatic style a lot but not always, she does chest voice as well. Doesn't usually add a lot of distortion though, and never growls, because they have Mark to do that lol. It's that famous style regarded as "Beauty and the Beast" that works so well when done right.
The music have similarities to other symphonic metal bands like NW but it's overall heavier. As a fan of both bands I see them as a nice complement since Epica has their own unique sound, with the death metal influence and such, and NW has their own trademark sound as well.
Epica is not always heavy though, they also have beautiful ballads as well, with just Simone singing, they are really versatile. To me it doesn't get better than these 2 bands if we are talking about this "symphonic metal" genre but of course I respect other bands like Within Temptation which are big as well
BTW they are from Netherlands (Isaac from Belgium), and these are the current members:
    Simone Simons - lead vocals
Mark Jansen - rythym guitar and growls also founder of the band - he was initially in After Forever together with Floor, but left in 2001, also a great band
Isaac Delahaye - lead guitar (he does some complementary growls like in this song)
Coen Janssen - keyboards and "random growls" (yes he has this cool moving keyboard and another one that's curved and portable) - he also arranges the orchestral parts
Rob van der Loo - bass
    Ariën van Weesenbeek
    - drums
    Cheers!

Epica is great live. They were the last show I saw before covid hit. It was in NYC in a small venue, but unfortunately the place didn't have the best acoustics for their style of music which kind of took away from the show a little bit. But any Epica show is still a great show.

One more thing. Epica has my favorite song called Unchain Utopia. Check it out plzzz!
In there Simon sings much, or rather little differently.
FYI Simon was pregnant during the show she did with Floor. He se she didn't do that much headbanging/windmilli'g. She is very much from same area than Floor. Not same country if I remember correctly. Sharon from Within Temptation is Dutch also like Floor.
And about that confetti. Band has to pay out of pocket whenever they use those effects. TankTheTech said prize ranges anywhere from 500-1000$. Or it may be taken from bands ticket prices, or sply from their fee's.

More 55%-68%, considering there are songs with majority Mark or just Mark. They are around the 55%-68% mark. Considering the choir as well are big parts in the interlude and fist songs on each album. Some songs even contain spoken word so Simone is about 55%-68% of the vocals.
