Strange Historical Facts About US States

- In a country with 50 separate territories with unique cultural backgrounds, laws, and social practices, it's unsurprising that citizens of each state in the US find pride in the unique histories of their home residency. Still, while we may boast about our own states and believe that we have a good idea of what goes on in others based on stereotypes and generalized ideas of regions throughout the US, there are a lot of surprising facts about the Midwest, the South, the Northeast, and the West Coast that are unbelievably bizarre but true.

As a South Dakotan, that hot springs joke killed me i had to pause the video
I hate to say it, but I was disappointed by this list.
Most of the entries seemed more like random facts in general, rather than strange facts about the states. I was expecting more stuff like Kentucky being the only state to have two people serving as president at the same time (Davis and Lincoln) or Texas having a provision in its constitution allowing it to split into five states. Stuff like that.
States don’t have presidents
OG narrator's voice and delivery are unmatched

Yeah I know. Little buddy's probably on vacation but the voice and the enunciation* and in humor are definitely unique and missed..

If only the voice inflection was there on the snarky parts. The script writing is top notch. The delivery and humor is lost.
Well, as far as I can tell it’s been every Thursday new guy has done the narration
I appreciate the consistency
The new guy sucks
@@mattwilliam5522totally agree
Cursed Thursday's
@@mattwilliam5522 Well, at least haters like you know which day to NOT watch videos from this channel, lol.
1:43 it was definitly a different time, when you had a smoking soldier in bed in a Penecilin ad. 🤣
Conch is pronounced Conk.
Not when I say it
Nice to see the Conch Republic story told - even to this day there are still Conch Republic signs here and there - you used to be able to get a Conch Republic Passport at certain times of the year.
Visitors from the US mainland can get the 'unofficial' title of Fresh-Water Conch if they live in Key West for long enough.
Here and there? Go into any gift shop on the island, and you'll find Conch merch. Coffee cups, t-shirts, key chains, placemats... I'll bet you can even find a Conch Republic mousepad, lol....
They're right next to the Key Lime Pies... 😁
Also it’s pronounced “konk” not “conCH”
@@DS-re4vs that's how we determine the non-natives!
The Camel idea in the desert is not outrageous. Australia introduced camels in the 19th century and there still is 1 million camels there.
They even export Camels back to the Middle East.
the new guy is the perfect example of 'be yourself'. Don't try to be the OG narrator, I am sure the new guy has his style that he needs to bring out instead of just trying to be the OG narrator.
See the new guys’s old work by searching “Cracked Does Not Compute.” so funny.
Maybe he should learn the correct pronunciation of Conch (konk).
@@mirzaahmed6589both pronunciations are acceptable.
Reminds me of Dan Levy and his father Eugene Levy
All of it is written content. Dude is just reading the script.
Yeah, Swaim narration! Love it! 🎉
For future reference, conch is pronounced "konk".
Thanks for this! 🗽 My maternal grandfather would always call margarine "oleo", no matter the brand.
I feel like the reg. Dude has a calm way of telling the stories. Instead of like he's reading it to us. But the new guys will get there! Thanks for your hard work! Love the vids.👍
his voice is so boring im falling asleep
and i just woke after 9 hours of sleep
Awwww, it’s been real nice to see the comments go from one side to the other about the new narrator! Good for you, Weird History 😂👍🏻
They aren't on the other side yet. The vast majority are still against him. Or it's not that they're against him, but they are just for the guy we all came to love. Without him it's just not the same channel at all. That voice was such a big part of it but I don't listen to the new ones. I think it should be a spin off channel.
10:14 Reminds me of the tv series Longmire, which is set in Wyoming.
Fantastic series!
This video uses the joke "Where is a bird lawyer when you need one?" and does not show Harvey Birdman as it does. Shame on you!
My husband's family hail from The Conch Republic. I love it here! We are locals and enjoyed ringing in the New Year on Duval Street and partying with ourfolks in Bahama Village 🐓🐚 🇨🇺 🇧🇸 🌴 for it to be one way in, one way out, we really should be our own republic 😀

Thank you for the pretty much daily content. Love all of the new voiceover people. Not easy to make these info channels run with one person reading alone.
I can almost hear the other guy’s voice when the sarcastic phrases are said. I only imagine him saying them and makes the video more enjoyable
I'm a North Carolinian and I had no idea about that river or that it's one of the world's oldest, that's actually pretty interesting
If you go far enough back in Weird History's catalog, there were 2 different narrators before Tom Blank, a man and woman voice. I think this was the first guy. See their video about the radioactive boy scout.
When people think of Van Halen, they think of David Lee Roth because he became the iconic voice. Nobody thinks of Sam Hagar. That's like a whole different band.
@jasondashney agreed. Tom is THE WH narrator to me. Just like Roth is THE VH frontman (even though i always skip over 1984 like i skipped over the Weird History food videos lol). And definitely not badmouthing this narrator. He's great, just different than what we've all come to know. Theres people out there who love the Van Hagar years too haha.
1:30 Just incredible!
It is crazy how much antibiotics are used today in health care facilities...and to think penicillin was the "first true antibiotic"! (American Chemical Society)
New guy won my heart with the Illinois joke. I like horrible puns
These aren't so much facts about states as they are just random facts that happened to occur in some particular named state. Could have been any state.
I luv that I'm not the only one thinking, "who's this?😡😂

When Tennessee seceded from the Union, Scott Couinty seceded from Tennessee. And wasn't fully readmitted to the state until the 1980s.
I think the alternate narrators are AI, because their jokes never land right.
waaaaah!!! waaaah waaaaaaaaaah
That is an absolutely moronic take. I don't like most of these terrible jokes, either, but that doesn't mean they were written/spoken by AI! Most people, in fact, suck at writing and/or telling jokes.
@@MatthewTheWanderer it was my theory based on the piss poor delivery.
A mnemonic device to learn some of the Mississippi river states is MIMAL the chef. His hat is in Minnesota, his head is in Iowa, his body is in Missouri, his legs are in Arkansas and his boots are in Louisiana. Some people add to the device by saying that he's cooking Kentucky Fried Chicken in a Tennessee frying pan.
Cool..I'm in Missouri about 30 min from the Mississippi and have never heard of that..thanks😊

Descendants of Jefferson Davis' camels were still running wild well into the mid-20th century in Arizona after the originals were set loose in the Sonoran Desert.

New Guy Is Good, and Also this allows for the OG Guy to rest a bit and be happier and better for the other videos.
And we as audience win because we'll get more and better videos!
I’d rather the videos came out less often but had the true voice. It’s part of the channel. Imagine if Hell’s Kitchen did a season without Gordon Ramsay. The views would absolutely plummet.
Variety is the spice of life.
Tell us you work for the channel without telling us you work for the channel. I see this same comment on every video from the new guy
Nah, I'd rather they be less frequent with the og guy than this schmuck.
6:02 I watched the four Jaws films in a daily sequence, ending with the last one (Jaws Revenge) on my birthday on December 7th.
I watched Jaws Revenge again on New Year's Eve.
Where's the regular narrator? Love that guy! Not complaining, just saying...
If you’re not complaining, I am. I only like the normal guy, he’s hilarious and his voice is perfect.
Hes just off for the holidays guys.
Not trying to be negative this guy is great. But the other guy could make me laugh with the tone of his voice.
You are complaining.
How do you know he's regular?
Is that Michael Swaim narrating?
It's pronounced "Conk" republic.
Micheal Swaim? Nice.
I think the new guy has a pretty good cadence and a good timbre for broadcasting
He certainly has a lot of experience, so he should.
9:44 I was a DJ at KDNE ("The Kidney") at Doane University for a semester and would always play "Come Original" by 311.
Also on the show, there was always a song from the album Version 2.0 by Garbage, it is my favorite college album.
Garbage is one of my favorite bands from the 90s!
7:34 "Impulse Control Hall of Fame" - LOVE IT!
Did I miss a video or an update on the next timeline decade? I love those videos and haven’t seen anything for quite a while.
I don't think you have missed anything. I haven't seen or heard anything about those in a while, either. I personally think those were the worst videos this channel makes and skipped most of them.
Heck yeah, Michael Swaim. I like the other guy just fine but I love when Michael does lists.
How'd you figure that out!? I don't see any credits. I remember Michael Swaim from Cracked and after reading your comment, I recognized his voice. Never would have expected him to end up here.
So it IS him? The tone and comedic timing are dead on with Swaim. Is it really him? It damn well sounds like him.
Michael Swaim sucks he’s not funny

*How about a video on asinine arcane state laws that still exist?*
I'm pretty sure they've done that before, but I bet there are enough of those kinds of laws that they could do more videos like that.
That's the best you could come up with for Mississippi? Should have just left it off the list.
I know that voice!!!!! Im subbed to your channel as well

A shout out to 311?! Awesome. My all-time favorite band.
All rivers from the area of the French Broad run north. The Toccoa/Ocoee does as well. Why? Because of the eastern Continental Divide. All rivers to the east of it will flow to the Atlantic, all those to the west will flow to the Gulf of Mexico.
For example, the Chattahoochee River starts in the mountains of Georgia. It flows down to the Gulf. The Flint River starts pretty much at the Atlanta airport (i.e.: within a few miles of the Chattahoochee). It flows to the Atlantic. Why? Because it starts east of the divide.
Conch, pronounced (Konk)
I guess Weird History hasn't ever heard of the "Boneyard" in Alaska
I came here to mention the same thing. I don't like the use of the word "facts" if they aren't true all true. Even the story about the eagle isn't a fact if they don't have the full story behind it.
6:02 It would be amazing if Steven Spielberg made another Jaws film!
Might as well do Canada next.
Burning Mattress is just above Hot Springs. 😅
7:47 Maybe he should have named it Thunder Island...
Charlie Kelly is an expert in Bird Law.
Everyone is so tough on the new narrator. I listen to weird history either when I'm working or in bed to fall asleep, the new guy scratches the same itch the usual narrators voice gives (to me at least) 😊. Of course, everyone is warranted their own opinion. I think if he added more emotion to his voice he'd be a lot better recieved. Great video as always!
Would have preferred to hear the story of Angelina Eberly for Texas .
