There are 26 paintings in Minecraft. All of them were made by the same artist... all but one. I became curious about the Minecraft Wither Painting, and wanted to know everything about it. To my surprise, the artist of the Minecraft Wither Painting is... unknown. So I knew I had to find some answers!

Paintings definitely deserve some recognition. Like, even the devs didn't bother to update it at all.
I guess when players can replace paintings with resource packs, there's not much need for them to update them.
That being said I'd totally be down for them adding dozens of more paintings if they wanted.
They could also allow you to put paintings in the loom, or it's own block, to pick what painting you want to place.
Why would they update something that's already perfected from the start?
I mean, they can just cram more images in, but they'll reaches the dimishing returns point, where they just isn't matter all that much.
That's why resource packs exists
1.20 is the perfect update for more of them.
@@ryujinayato1623 Exactly. I one hundred percent agree.
Paintings always gives me the old minecraft vibes, and I always like to use then somewhere
It’s so surprising how old paintings are. Before the nether. Before infinite terrain. Before golden apples. Before the brick pyramid.
looks like the Overworldians had made paintings before they could build, explore, and find golden apples in ancient rooms sealed under, mabye this was a heritary thing?
Not the brick pyramid one but yea
@@aceplante inf terrain, golden apples and brick pyramids were in the same ish version.
Sorry about the confusion
@@isaacbluestone1462 Brick pyramids were alpha, actually infdev might be prealpha but thats when we got infinite worlds, and idk about gapples.
@@aceplante Infdev was pre-alpha
There's been a small handful of new music discs added to the game in the last two years since the last one in 2012. We haven't had a new painting since 2012 either, aside from the four command exclusives from 1.19 that nonetheless came from a 2012 Pocket Edition build which still makes them older than the wither painting. When are we getting new paintings, Mojang?
mojang: in 2069
Mojang has become ridiculously lazy over the past couple of years, so other than those 4 Bedrock paintings, probably never.
@@vectorimagefun unrelated but Jebble
I’d love if they contracted Zetterstrand again
They added 5 new paintings in bedrock lol
Honestly the wither painting having a different author/Not well known author fits SO WELL with the lore.
Iirc, from the minecraft mob book whatever it was called; these paintings just appear. It’s an eerie super-natural painting that just appears to potentially tempt curious individuals into creating a ‘god of death’ so to speak.
Maybe these paintings were conjured by the soul of the wither, and it temps naive players into making it a new body, and from there disposing of the now useless player. Almost some kind of SCP stuff here. Or maybe I'm just reading too deeply into this
"the minecraft mob book" The Mobestiary?
Okay now this is creepy but cool!
Personally, I always liked decorating my builds with paintings and making my own art galleries, so I would be excited to see some updated paintings come to the game, with the potential of some hidden lore in them.
I still love using paintings to hide a secret room. It's a simple trick, but quite effective if done right.
I remember how useful paintings were in the earliest days of Pocket Edition, when the blocks were limited to about what you had in alpha Minecraft (only one wood type, stone, glass, colored wool, it was only like one page of creative inventory). They're an oddly nostalgic feature to me, one of the very few things that has remained absolutely consistent throughout the years.
It was possible to break paintings through corners, which would have had great potential for hidden doors but this was pre-redstone as well.
I really hope they add the 4 elements paintings to Survival; they'd make for a good tool to add a bit of lore to one's world.
Too but it's very easy to o add with an datapack
@@rauhau_ Hurr hurr datapacks
I'm a huge fan of Zetterstrand, so I often use paintings in my builds.
I've also made some custom paintings in a vanilla style using optifine's CIT feature, but it's currently broken in the latest version for some reason.
Hm. Maybe try changing the texture packs version to the latest?
Around 1.14 they split the painting textures into their own individual textures instead of one sheet, that could be the issue
One thing I've always felt was weird about the paintings is that they're all (bar one) made by the same artist. It's a bit odd having an entire world where only one painter has ever made paintings. It would be nice if there was a bit more variety to choose from.
Another thing is I think that they're about the only in-game things that explicitly reference things outside of the game.
Alex is based off Jeb, right?
I think it would be cool if they brought back paintings with an adjusted crafting recipe which puts some type of ore at the top or bottom. The ore you choose causes the painting to be one of a particular "series", so each round of new paintings added gets its own series and you can more easily select those options.
Just an idea.
Maybe instead of ores they did something like banner patterns?
You find a “series” in a chest somewhere and when you craft painting with this “series” item it changes the paintings to that one. And then you keep the item as you keep the banner patter and can use it again later.
Have a few different “series” around the world. Maybe one can spawn in each main structure? (Village, stronghold, fortress, city, sunken ships, mansions)
I think that would fit in quite well
Despite the small variety, there are still enough to fit into almost any room. Maybe they don't fit with every build style, but each and every one of the paintings are iconic in my opinion. Even the wither. Not that I wouldn't love to see more new paintings added alongside them.

I imagine that soon paintings will receive the fate of the soundtrack, they'll have a new artist come in and make stuff that sort of fits, yet still clashes heavily with the original vibe and crowds out all the originals. The wither painting always felt a tad off, but thankfully its such an obscure part of the game that there's no reason to care. It would really suck if they completely overhauled the painting system, there's just something about the current set that is so quintessentially Minecraft.
I wouldn’t care, more paintings is better for everyone
@@darkithnamgedrf9495 Eh, its weird seeing features that really don't fit mixed in with everything else. Just kind of ruins the immersion in the game we all know and love. It would be a minor feature, yet very offputting when used.
Pigstep and otherside are amazing tracks, but imo they aren't minecraft tracks, otherside really just gives me those celeste vibes.
Same goes with the new background music, the nice thing about the old music is that it was just simple and not too present.
the new soundtracks are amazing wtf you talking about
@@danieladmiraal9371 To be fair I do enjoy the Nether tracks, since the slight "off" feelings fit well with a literal other dimension. Similar thing for Otherside, which is clearly meant for the End and is an optional track played by the player (and let's be honest all the music disks are a bit out of left field compared to most Minecraft ambience anyways). The 1.18 and up stuff is where it really gets disappointing, it just feels like it belongs in an entirely different game and is way too in your face.
this makes me wonder, if 1.20's theme is representation and storytelling, could they possibly be planning to update paintings? 👀
I like the idea of using paintings to communicate game mechanics to the players. I hope Mojang does more with that.
I do wish we'd get some more paintings.
I still use them to hide passageways, and as decoration, but most of them don't fit in with my builds.
tbh, 1.20 seems like a good opportunity to add some paintings, so I'm hoping for that.
I always wished they’d add multiple collections of paintings made with different colors of wool.
Even though map art has kinda replaced paintings, it would be nice to see at least one themed per update! Like a bastion or piglin painting and a warden painting
i wish we got like 3-5 new paintings every update, would be neat way to show fanart and expand lore
I always wanted more paintings. I love the ones we've had, but the selection is pretty small.
I mentioned somewhere that, to get more paintings in the game, Mojang should hold a small event or smth where we can make paintings of our own. A total of 10-20, maybe even 30, paintings will be randomly chosen to be added to the game. It would both be fun because it's an event and because we get to partake in an update in another way than the mob vote.
One change i would like is instead of a random painting appearing, it should cycle between all the paintings in a sequence
That way impatient ppl like me dont accidentally break the painting we r looking for
every painting definitely deserve some recognition. like even the devs don't bother to update it at all.
Someone shall truly depixelise the Wither painting from ashes unto its former glory it once had
technically it already exists within the natural texture pack by 4JStudeos

I enjoy paintings in Minecraft a lot. I would love it if more were added.
He even updated the title, respect
great video! watched the entire thing 400 times already, even though it’s been 2 minutes since the video released. fantastic!
Me too
AH yes speed
yes
it just now got posted-
I'm kind of surprised we still didn't know this about the paintings, considering how old they are. Thanks for making this!
I liked this video! Very fun.
I had no idea this painting's history was so complex!
Feels like the one thing people use paintings for is the age-old trick of hiding a secret passage or room
I wonder if these 4 paintings hint at some kind of magic system that might be added to Minecraft in the future, it clearly depicts the 4 elements fire, water, earth and air.
Avatar reference
I find it funny that nowadays people make the Wither all the time without knowing what this painting is.
Also, the bookshelf is one of the blocks that wasn't changed since indev version of Minecraft
Interesting, great narration, great editing; short but concise, i really enjoyed this!
They should have added paintings with every update like the music disk, so they can be little guides of the new stuff the update added
We need a panting update
yeah
When you say 1.4.2 it seems like something that was not too long ago, when in reality it was 10 years ago.
I'm very glad that this was my first version of Minecraft I played -- very iconic.
I’ve never played Minecraft, but found this video to be incredibly intriguing. Always respect video game history and deep dives into unique game mysteries like this. Well done!
The craziest part about this is the fact that its been 10 years since the last painting was added. :O
If they do ever come back around to messing with the paintings, it would be nice to be able to choose what painting you want displayed, or at least specify the size of the painting before you place it so you have a narrower list of options
If I where to guess, it was probably a guy who knows how to make the wither
thanks for solving this mystery for once and for all 😀
Actually, in "official" Minecraft lore, that painting has slot of significance.
You see, in the time of the ancient builders, there were some people called 'settlers'. They saw this painting and tried their best to recreate it in their real world. Try eventually found out that this was in the nether, blah blah blah, they out together the materials and accidentally spawned the wither, they thought it would be just cool to have that structure in their world. This wither DESTROYED things so much the ancient builders took notice and lured the wither into the nether. They used their monopoly over piglins to force them into fighting their wither (it's why piglins still attack withers and wither skeletons) then they locked the nether by breaking every portal into it (thus the ruined portals). The wither destroyed every bastion the ancient builders made (thus ruined bastions) and was finally killed eventually.
Unfortunately, the ancient builders were under a zombie apocalypse and knew they needed golden apples to cure their civilization. Their only reliable source was the slave piglins who would mine it for them, and now they couldn't go back or they'd destroy their own world. Eventually, every ancient builder died EXCEPT YOU, the player.
Fun story right? A CZcamsr with the channel 'Dragonic' made this by putting together data from the game and the official source book 'Mobestiary'. Give him some love
they should let jappa make some new paintings. Maybe like, one or two based on each update since 1.13, and then after that every update can have it's own new paintings, sorta like how they're adding new music discs every update now.
Such a good video, I have watched this 1000 times already :D
Me and my friend still use paintings when decorating something. Sometimes they really fit in. I found that using paintings for Halloween builds might be nice.
If paintings come back, I think having a way to determine what they are in advance, like with Banners, would be interesting to allow for larger images to be made without maps, while not replacing maps in the process.
i personally love paintings; i kinda wish theyd add new ones. maybe with an easier way to get the ones you want. i think itd be nice if every update came with a few new paintings that could give some mini lore or just cool art of some of the new features
like imagine if update aquatic had some cool guardian painting and maybe a painting of some fish and dolphins in a nice underwater landscape; or the nether update had a piglin seige (sorta like minecraft legends)
and then there could always be ones based off of real paintings; like man with a bowler hat but instead of a dove its a parrot and instead of a bowler hat its a turtle helmet or something
I do hope more painting types are added in the future, as well as a better way to pick what painting you place
Paintings are honestly a really nice feature in theory, but personally I don't find any of the paintings in the larger sizes fitting into the styles I build much. 1x1 paintings sometimes will, and the occasional 2x1, but the larger ones just don't have enough variety to have ones I consistently like.
But honestly, the main issue with them is the placing, to me. It's not that it's bad, just overly time consuming. Being able to set the NBT via a workbench would be pretty solid, something like the Loom, and leave the default type to be randomised on place still.
But, if Mojang added more painting types, that'd be awesome. All of KF's paintings, and Jeb's Wither one, are nice, but having more variety would be great. But at minimum, having some way to do a cheaper form of map art for paintings would be really nice, and bring them back to the mainstream instead
I remember one of the devs saying in reply of people wanting more paintings they didnt want to add more of them cuz theyd have to based them off of other mobs and they didnt want to do that, which i feel is a dumb reason to why weve gotten no more (the bedrock ones dont count as those were ingame forever).
I really like the painting they just have this charm to it so i hope there will be more added
Antvenom. I have a video idea. I have heard that after the Farther Lands there are two more sets called the Fartherer and the Farthest lands.
Could you please do a video about them even tough i have heard it is hard to make them generate. Just a idea tho!
Love your videos!
When AntVenom uploads, you know it's going to be a masterpiece.
yeah
Agreed
Fun fact, the pixelated man is named King Graham (from the original King's Quest)
I honestly think they should update paintings and add more to Minecraft.
I always reamber adding them around my house because it just made it feel more alive.
It be cool if they add more and maybe add like a way to make your own
so for the “expersing yourself update” paintings would make perfect sense adding more
yo ant, I saw you in Jared’s last livestream. crazy stuff
Even to this day, the first paintings still the best ones even among MODS of paintings, they are really good!
Map art is neat
But imagine just using a large painting to draw on a 4x4 surface area
Would be a neat thing
I’m surprised we haven’t been given a option to create our own painting
paintings are goated when talking about the legacy console resource mash-up packs.
kinda funny to hear a phrase "prehistoric update" regarding an update that i remembered as released 2 or 3 yrs ago... i remember watching snapshot showcases, other beacon variants and the whole hype behind the second minecraft boss. Feels like yesterday, I think i'm getting old...
oo with the new update i hope they add in a bunch of new paintings.. maybe even an "easel" that can be used to select paintings
I always use them in house builds, TVs, computers, and arcade machines, sometimes in other ways
I feel like it's possible paintings will get an update with this update since this update is all about expression. What exactly they will do with it though I don't know
There's a mistake in the English subtitles at 5:13! Great vid ☺️
Hey, since this update is gonna be "Self Expression/Story Telling"
wouldn't be cool to add new paintings but this time, the community will post their work? like fan arts, memes and such similar to Terraria
To me the Wither painting doesn't look similar to the others, it looks far softer and smoother.
The un-includes painting at the end with the steve head would've been a really good fit, maybe they'll add it later
Love the video! Also a suggestion: Minecraft China
I cant go a house without a Wither painting-
It fits my name...
I don't know why but everytime I see a Minecraft painting I suddenly remembered my old deleted world which i placed bunch of tnts and paintings, It always brought me tears🥲
what pack are u using ? when u showed the wither being crafted (example) like what did u use ? thats so cool
Hey Antvenom I found something past the stripe lands can you make a video on it? I call it the dotlands btw
I remember before finding out map art was a thing using the 2x4 one as a tv and the 1x1s as laptop screens
Been using them since day 1 they just so special
1.20 mojang: we should add credits finally who made paintings 🧐
Nice timing pretty sure around this time 1.4 got released 10 years ago :)
This is truly a silly discovery, but I love it.
I love the paintings they just look good
I for one could see my self happy with a paintings only update 😊
is it just me or do those new paintings look like they could tie into archaeology?
Those 4 new paintings look a lot like they're meant to be symbols for water, air, fire, and earth 🤔
5:21 these paintings kinda remind me of the symbols of the four nationals from Avatar The Last Airbender
you should do another vid on who made the 4 unused painting
5:18 I don’t remember those painting and I played MCPE for awhile back then...
Antvenom can we get a new video of the new paintins they are all Minecraft based including a villager one i find it interesting
The paintings are an enigma

this is a nice question how i had never asked my self thx for this video 👌👍
Wanted to ask, do you think you'll ever make music again like you did back in 2013? (2014 maybe? Not sure on the year) Or do you think that chapter is behind you?
Interesting, still early on in the video but the Wither painting was added on my birthday. That's cool
this gives off the energy of a youtube short
