      @@ritanagel3554 You are so funny but at the same time also so extremely un-intelligent. The Russians couldn´t stop laughing when they saw Trump being elected in 2016. What Russia wants is de-stabilization of the West, and Trump was a guarantor of that. I have to laugh out loudly every time someone claims that "Russia had never invaded Ukraine when Trump was a President". In addition I could also mention a lot of things that Trump promised but didn´t keep. Trump also reminded me very much of Putin: Always screaming "Fake News" when he saw FACTS presented that he didn´t like.

      The Economist is a great magazine and she is the head of it. I highly recommend it. When you first start reading it you can get the impression it's a little bit what Americans would call "republican" economically -- and she hit that a few times with "free markets" and so forth but once you read it over time you get a clearer and deeper picture of what it represents. They also write their articles anonymously so there is none of the "following your favorite pundit" sort of thing that we fall into in the US. It can also be very funny and biting in the classic British style of humor which is very sly. It also covers the world in a very proportional way. Can't speak highly enough about it. And, yeah, she's some sort of ideal . . .

      Still can't believe these journalists...Walter looking totally perplexed at the notion that "even if there is a bit of truth to the West's hypocracy". And Zanny... "a bit"? C'mon. Everyone knows the truth. The inability to look in the mirror is the mental health crisis of the ages. When the layman is fed bias from the media, then later finds out "oh, sorry Iraq had no WMDs"...it's no wonder they are pissed. The solution needs to not just be "even if there's a bit of truth, the world is much better off embracing western values"...it should be "there is a lot of truth, we need to change drastically, so that there is no hypocracy, and the world which we espouse is fact not fiction". This is the answer. Not "well, emerging countries are still better off in our hypocritical world, than in a dictatorship"

  • @osirisx111
    @osirisx111 Před 2 lety +73

    All right, I think this was the most relevant conversation I've seen in a while, especially the middle part. Many countries are backing Russia or just sitting on the fence, waiting to see what will happen, and I've also seen many characterizing the war in Ukraine as a conflict between Russia and the entire West. However, we can clearly see that Russia offers no better alternative to the current global order, instead they offer the promises of the same old Cold War era standoff, with the arms race, global paranoia, economic isolationism, saber rattling, and frequent diplomatic crises, much more intense then any of it was since the Cold War. The western system is far from perfect, it is often hypocritical and allows for double standards in international relations, but the alternative offered here is pure self interest, countries with powerful armies bullying those that can't defend themselves, full state control of the press, and crackdowns on the freedom of assembly. In my mind, democracies provide at least a chance for improvement, via elections, civil engagement, and free discourse, while dictatorships can only be undone by revolutions or coups which always leave a country worse off then it was before. Rehashing failed historical political systems is never the correct path.

      Well said. The problem with Putin , or any autocratic dictatorship, is that there is no orderly system in place to continue without him in power. I you get rid of Putin do we have any idea who will take over next? A complete collapse and revolution in Russia, where about half the nuclear weapons on Earth sit, is probably not a good thing. The real power is in the people. The average Russian wants the same thing the average American wants. The West (and much of the world) has supported Ukraine. But he must realise that we want to avoid WWIII. Just as we understand that Indias' dependence on Russia is why it couldn't go further than abstaining. It's ingenuous to talk of double standards. @@ayethein7681 I do not think the arguments of Zelensky are criticism. He rather uses very strong arguments in a very extreme negotiation. If he knows we can not do certain things, it is a very professional negotiation strategy to ask for it anyway. Additionally, he can not stop asking for it because it would not be obvious to his own people why he does not ask. I think in speeches to other governments, he plays these cards quite openly. He makes the impossible requests in a somewhat formal way, and changes to much deeper emotional involvement before he continues. He is basically a more professional politician than we are used to.
      Actually, I did not see his arguments as criticism even in his speech to the German Bundestag Parliament. When he talks about Germany buying large amounts of Russian gas in very harsh terms, everybody in the room knows he is just factually right. It is not that he explains something new. I am sure the Ukrainians have had the same feelings like us. The West even though is not perfect but their system is far better than Russia and China. If anyone said otherwise then let me ask them this. Why do the majority of asylum seekers go to the West and not to Russia nor China. I was one of the very lucky one, that I got to Australia as a refugee in the 80’. I always count my blessings until the day I die. Yes he has humanity and emotional empathy. Putin lacks these things because he's a psychopathic narcissist. A Narcissist cares not at all for other people as a person; they only matters inasmuch as what they can do for the narcissist. other people are viewed as objects.
      It is very hard for normal, caring people to understand this and because of that, they often think they can reach the narcissist. They cannot. A narcissist cannot be reached with empathy and you cannot appeal to his good graces. He is capable of neither. Emotional empathy is not in their orientation to the world at all an that trigger is not there inside them.
      For people with normal functioning empathy the knowledge they are hurting someone would be enough to stop the behavior because it's coming from someone who already has normally-functioning empathy. If a person has normally-functioning empathy, that is all it would take. The knowledge they are hurting another person would trigger an emotional reaction that would create a behavioral response: This happens because that person has normally-functioning empathy, so the information that they are hurting another person has emotional meaning for them. If someone does not have normal empathy, that information often does not mean anything to them. Without empathy to give this information emotional meaning, it does not become understanding. It's just information with no emotional meaning or value. It will not create a reaction that pushes this person to stop their behavior. Just knowing you are hurting someone else is not enough. You have to actually care about that in order for this information to make you want to stop. Without empathy, you will not care and therefore, you will not stop unless you are forced to do so by some external reason.
      Narcissists are empty vessels with nothing pushing them onward through life but the desire for more and a pathological jealousy of and anger toward anybody they perceive as having something they don't. They are human wrecking balls bent on destroying themselves and everyone else they can . They are mimics, they are chameleons. What they are not are people who value human life.
      Thhe best way to know who someone really is, is by observing their actions. their true motivations will always come through their actions in the end or they wouldn't get what they want.
      They are a true and accurate mimic, but don't be fooled. Narcissists are truly handicapped and crippled human beings in that regard: they have no real feelings at all for anyone other than themselves. psychopaths are narcissists are very good manipulators and it's easy to see why many buy into their charming false person, A mask of humanity that this person has had decades to perfect. it's all a lie. there is no meaningful Humanity in these people. What you're seeing is a very clever mimic and your own humanity reflected back at you . it is not real.
      That's why never ignore, excuse away, rationalise and justify reality and someones blatant actions in favor of their own misguided idea that this person seems like an okay guy . It s letting feelings override their common sense and intellectual understanding.

      This FACT , opposes the Ukrainian lie that the referendum in Donbasses was a fake election ran by the Russians.
      IF Russia went through all that trouble to have a fake election in Donbasses, then they would rubber stamp the process of annexing Donbasses. But the opposite happened. The Russian parliament had a debate and voted against it ..

      THE ACCUSTION from Ukraine and NATO that the Donbasses referendum was a "fake" rigged election, has NO PROOF to support it. It is a baseless accusation .

    This was one of the best interviews / commentaries I have watched so far. Living in Brazil and demonstration my support for Ukraine and the west in Brazil raises many eyebrows. And when you ask these people why the disapproval, the answers vary: 1 - we are a small dog in a Pitbull fight; 2 - we sell a lot of stuff to China and Russia and the US and Europe compete unfairly with us in the international markets, 3 - the west is arrogant and mistreats us, so that is why it is better to associate with the BRICS which treat us as equals, 4 - the US needs no excuse or approval to invade sovereign countries, and when they do come up with excuses, they are generally lame excuses, 5 - the US has a history of double-crossing their allies. Did so in Iraq, Afghanistan, Central and South America, you name it, 6 - the US would rather spend trillions of dollars in useless wars than to invest that capital in the betterment of infrastructure, educations etc in allied nations.
    I usually counter with: 1 - would we be better off in a world ruled by China or Russia ? The answer is invariably no. 2 - the fact that we are a small dog derives from the fact that the US or the west didn't "help" us or is it the consequence of poor governments fraught with corruption, bad decisions, systemic lack of investment in infrastructure, lack of massive investment in education, not opening our borders to free trade, not reforming our legislation to curb expenditure with politicians and the public sector, not modernizing our tributary laws, not promoting inclusive institutions, and a number of other points that are frankly in our power to do ? the answer is also predictable.
    Don't think there aren't people in developing nations that do not realize what a gift it is to live in a system that has the US as a superpower and the west as their allies. In these countries there are also plenty of people frustrated with the way their governments work and that know in which direction we should steer decisions. Alas, it takes time and our lives are too short. The west could and should help, especially with the example and with understanding, but also by changing diplomatic attitudes and opening up markets to the products of the developing world. Even if one-sided.

    Thank you, Zanny and all involved, both for your superb interview with President Zelenskyy, and for this discussion. I found the interview truly fascinating and as you say, his authenticity shines through. I'm not surprised he doesn't rehearse his presentations as it's so clear they come from an unshakeable core. So often we see world leaders talking about patriotism, we rarely see them demonstrating it without trying, and without trappings, whilst looking the world in the eye. And he is, as you say, channelling the spirit of 44 million people. Being their public face. Both their leader, and very much one of them. The cruelty and callousness meted out against the people of his country is devastating for those of us watching outside. What it must feel like to the Ukrainian people, and to President Zelenskyy, facing this 24/7, I can scarely imagine. It is a privilege to watch someone emerge on to the world stage who is such a powerful and passionate advocate for his country, and who embodies its spirit so strongly. It is just such a heartwrenching shame that his country and its people have to suffer so much for us to see it. We owe him and his people a huge debt of gratitude, for fighting so bravely for what so many of us take for granted, for showing the world fearlessly and viscerally what it costs to defend freedom, and for reminding us what love of country really is. Not plastic patriotism, but blood and bone loyalty to each other, to the land, and to their ancestors.

      I agree. We in the West have done ourselves no good when we have supported dictators when it gave us access to oil and conducted regime changes against the popular vote of the people in various nations around the world but on this occasion the West must help Ukraine destroy Russia militarily in Ukraine so that it cannot succeed in this invasion. Sovereign nations and their borders must be respected and nations that break those rules must pay reparations. It benefits everyone if we can maintain a rules based order and give everyone the expectation that their goods and services can be sold around the world in the most fair and competitive marketplace that we can create under those rules. That can give lasting dignity and an increasing equality of opportunity to families in every nation.

    Ukrainian national anthem translated into English. 500 years old words of this nation anthem tells it all...
    The glory and freedom of Ukraine have not yet perished
    Luck will still smile on us brother-Ukrainians.
    Our enemies will die, as the dew does in the sunshine,
    and we, too, brothers, we'll live happily in our land.
    We’ll not spare either our souls or bodies to get freedom
    and we’ll prove that we brothers are of Kozak kin. Slava Ukraine💙💛

    Very telling interview. Zelensky is truly brave and is exceptional. Also modest. And he’s completely right. - the west must not shudder in the face of nuclear blackmail. Germans and Americans, please understand your countries must be prepared to make sacrifices to support Ukrainians. No more oil and gas purchases from Russia for any country.

    Let's be real here, when none western countries go through economic crisis, food shortages, massive inflation most of us in our secure societies might read about it or see on a telly for few seconds. Now we are actually experiencing a fraction of what those folks live through for years and we are freaking out. New reality has come and we better get used to it. Good times might be a thing of a past.

    • @harryricochet8134
      @harryricochet8134 Před 2 lety

      Ha! You actually think a little bit of an inflationary fluctuation in retail prices amounts to 'a fraction of what these folks live through for years'. My grandparents and many of my teachers lived through the Great Depression then fought the Second World War, after which those who survived, returned home and without pause set to work reconstructing their nation and expanding its domestic infrastructure to accommodate hundreds of thousands of post war immigrants. We were raised to respect those people and the enormous personal and collective sacrifices which they made for all of us and when we became adults assumed their work ethic and beliefs in personal effort for common endeavour. If you genuinely believe that you or anyone else from your generation which habitually hurls the most vile insults at their elders and betters such as 'ok Boomer' have the first concept of living in hardship then you're in for a very rude albeit most overdue awakening. You're just another utterly spoilt maladjusted smug brat whose greatest life skill is hating upon the very society that gave you the affluence in which you have hitherto been able to lead a life of endless choice and selfishness. 'Thing of a past' indeed.
