  • I decided that I had so much fun with the last gear review, and piece of gear that I bought, that I decided to do another one. In this video I give my thoughts and opinions of the Traveler Ultra Light Electric. I also did some fun modifications to it which was also a first for me! How did it turn out? Watch and find out for yourself!

    Great review! I've heard from numerous sources that new strings usually will go out of tune from bends if they aren't properly stretched after being installed and overall, properly stretched new strings stay in tune a lot better vs not stretching them

    I have the Speedester model and I love it. As a matter of fact I wanted it to be my main guitar not only for travelling or on the go.
    If any of you own one of those then you will know how pain in the xxx to change the strings. So I bought the locking tuners and it was such a relief..
    The only issues is trying to get a good neck relief, and also staying intune issue.
    Other than that those Traveller Guitars are awsome.

    Cool! I added Planet Waves machine heads that lock and cut the strings (with low profile so as not to stick out), and just went with the stock rails humbucker.....I have SD Hot Rails on both my Strats and they all sound very similar, except I wish there were a volume control on my Traveler.....great video!

    • @bacontrees
      @bacontrees Před 3 lety

      @@brendangeaney No, they were low profile, so shorter as regular size heads would stick above the wood too much....so mine are pretty much level with the wood. Not sure about the Fender heads, but just get the dimensions of the heads and measure the Traveler. If find some time, I will post the measurements and specs for my heads.

    I closed my eyes and couldn't tell one iota of difference, which leads me to continue to believe that most "serious" guitarists grossly overpay for upgrades and signature models and all sorts of things that make 0% difference in their sound. That money would be better spent going into lessons to upgrade their playing, rather than their equipment (however you're a pretty good player & quite a good picker). - DJ

      Idk man. Depends how good your hearing is. I have Asperger's I can definitely tells the difference this sounds cheap and has to be saved with effects. It reminds me of my old encore just horrid. The other thing between a good and cheap guitar is the frets a cheap axe will have defects and buzzing that your action has nothing to do with and have to file out to fix my ibanez iceman STM 1. But my Was perfect from the get go. And sings. Where as my encore sounds like a dying cat crashing in to a trash can. That the difference between a guitar that costs 120 and one that costs 700

    I use to have a guitar similar to what your playing.When it came to strumming the guitar,you don't have a full arm movement which makes you skip strings by flipping the wrist. It has a good sound but nothing I would buy. Now you mentioned when bending strings it makes the guitar go out of tune? My Fernandes Nomad Deluxe did the same thing. Got a Tele and sold the Nomad on Craigs List.

    I got a Pro series in the late 90's - great guitar! But I like a flat neck and don't do a lot of bends. Not impressed by the hotrail. Seems to have increased the mids - I like a scooped tone. Never occurred to me to put locking tuners on it. Heavy locking tuners kind of goes counter to the idea of a lightweight travel guitar - but at least the extra weight is on the correct end of the guitar and not on the headstock end.

    Hi there! Since you've reviewed both the electric and the acoustic version of this guitar, would you say there's a significant difference, soundwise, between the two when playing unplugged ?
    I consider getting me one of these (I'm a lefty so obviously I don't have a lot of choice), and will mainly use it to practice, unplugged. I already like to play my regular electrics unplugged for practical reasons, and the lack of that 'big' sound doesn't bother me when working scales and stuff like that. Thanks for the cool review!

      Never thought of this before. I just tried it, and I would say it is slightly different since well... one has acoustic strings vs electric strings... so yeah the feel and tonality will be a bit different but not terribly since they are small.

    Did you ever find a cause/solution to the strings de-tuning after bends?

    • @rocketrose2165
      @rocketrose2165 Před 9 měsíci

      The de-tuning on bends comes from all that length between the tuners and the nut. I've found that if I bend then tune then bend and retune it pretty much stays in tune. So it's about getting any slack out of the string run.
      I love mine. I pick it up all the time so I'm getting more playing time in and therefore improving. I'm only 71 so there's still room for growth.

    Once again, its "all in the set up". string depth to bed may have been off, type of strings could also be off. Are strings set properly into grooves. there is a great video of Joe Walsh talking about tuning his guitar after new strings. Especially how to reseat them.
    then, with any New Type of guitar, there are obvious trade offs for convenience.
    But you know, for its ultra-light use, it does it job. And that's what it sells for. It's a trade-off in user features get just get you by so to speak.

    I am interested in buying the pro version of this guitar But I am teetering between the single coil and this pickup. Would you happen to know if that pick up has 4 wires. I am thinking maybe I can split the coils. I do realize it will not sound the same. They don't make the pro vision mahogany single coil.. I have to try one. If the neck is anything like a fender or Gibson I would be Happy.Thanks for posting.

      @arglebarglefoofara  Před 5 lety

      The pickup I put in, was a Seymour Duncan SHR-1, their website has the schematic (wiring diagram) for the pickup. I would suspect that if you wanna do splitting though you will need to install some type of switch somewhere as well? so that's a project as well. The neck I would say is like a standard Gibson, it's 24.75 scale length with a 15.75 inch radius, which is what I associate Gibson Les Pauls with minus the radius which on Pauls are 12.
