I suggest giving it to somebody who knows how to work on them
need to diesel electric the gator
Stick a motorbike engine in it. Go drag racing. Because it’s ridiculous. Try to create the world’s fastest gator
PUT A DIESEL IN IT ..!!!!!! LOL KUBOTA, YANMAR ETC..
EV swap it? Might be a cool way to get hands on with something similar to the electric side of the Edison project
Of course Americans are very hospitable. Way more than those Canadians. The only thing a Canadian has ever offered me was a hot cup of coffee, his gloves, an entertaining conversation, his skates and one heck of a game of hockey.
Honestly I think 95% of the people in the world are good and will do a lot to help their fellow man. It's another 5%, we got to watch out for.
Here's to a Happy New Year. All of us with tools let's try and help someone this year that doesn't know the difference between a torque wrench and a torx head. Give a kid his first set of tools or maybe just a hammer who knows what he could grow up to build.
I got you and i like this
I think the Gator needs a 3 cylinder Kubota swap for sure
Or a Cummins ‘P’ pump 😜
My vote as well. Diesel swap!
I really love that Andy is more and more in these videos. Lovely dude to watch and a great addition to the channel.
"Washed the seats... that didn't make it start" Priceless... Fun video. Happy New Year to the entire Deboss family!
I laughed but I’ve had crap like that happen where I was stuck scratching my head, cold beer and 30 minutes and the problem solved itself lol!
That starter was putting in WORK 😂
3 months warranty being put to work
Those early HPX gators were REALLY cold-blooded and some careful choke work was often necessary to get them to accelerate from idle even when they were brand new. I believe there were some updates from Deere but it’s been better than a decade since I’ve worked on one.
Those are good engines when they are well maintained, but as you can see, things can get finicky quickly.
All the videos to come out of this series have been fantastic. Jenna and Chase seem like the nicest people. Hope everyone in the Deboss Garage Family had a great Holiday season with their families.
I've worked on several of these early Gators, and those Kawasaki V-twins are finicky bastards to keep running properly. Spark plugs are critical. Try to make sure you use the original short reach plugs, even though it would accept extended reach plugs if you clean the threads. They made some with little Kubota diesels, and they were definitely much better than the gas motors. Maybe you can find one to swap in?😄👍👍
Fair dinkum mate,
You made that look hard.
It’s nearly always the carb on those things.
They are always getting fueled up from containers that have dubious fuel in them.
As a diesel mechanic I feel your pain.
😎
Same
super awesome to hear that you've had so many good experiences here in the U.S.!
The Gator my aunt has in the UK has a little 3 cylinder diesel in it, possibly a Kubota. Perhaps you could find one out of a digger or forklift or something. The battery on that one is next to the exhaust at the back of the bed (it's a 6 wheel one) and it has an electric hydraulic ram for the tipper bed which is really handy.
The seats get worn because of the way you get in and out, you can get a little more life out of them by swapping the driver and passenger seats.
We had diesel versions on the flight line, when I deployed to Iraq. Pretty sure the Diesel engines in them, are Yanmar.
It’s a yanmar 3 cylinder
It probably sheared the keyway on the flywheel after the backfire. So the ign. timing is way out.
I know a few people that have had and used and then given up on those older gators. They require a lot of maintenance that most people (mostly farmers) never do, and in my opinion even when they do run they don’t sound like they run right. Very cold blooded as well.
Kawasaki's require valve adjustments at around 700hrs or less. No one does them nor cleans them like Kawasaki recommends either. Kohler is far less maintenance labor intensive but Deere is in bed with Kawasaki.
I’ve seen numerous Kohler’s with hydraulic lifters have the lifter fail at 2-400 hours, but they seem solid otherwise, seen a lot of Kawasaki’s with 11-1300 hrs but the kohler mowers seem to vanish before then, they both beat the brakes off the Briggs and scrap iron tho
I’ve had great luck with my Kawasaki
Maintenance no getting followed… really.
I work for a kawi dealer. Yeah i agree they need valve adjustments cause they will end up ticking but also see them last 2500 hours on just oil changes
@@dylanleary8425 I work at a JD dealer, the rest of the machine tends to fall apart before the engines give up, usually just the cost of wear parts stack up to the point it’s to expensive to fix, plus people are just hard on stuff
Crazy thing is I know where that thing came from I made the aluminum fender extensions on it but it's in tough shape since I saw it last.
That's awesome. Nice work on the aluminum! It was hit pretty hard on the left, but I will leave the aluminum!
I have 7 of those in our operation. One's a diesel though, and that's the only one I don't have to fool with on a daily basis.
Hi Rich. A very Happy New Year to you, Aaron, Andy, and all your families. Here's to a terrific 2024. Can hardly wait for new content!
Thank you!
Don't know if you figured it out yet. The ignition timing is determined by a sensor and a magnet on the flywheel. If the Key have sheared on the crank it will not start and do this kind of huge backfires. There's also like 4-5 carburetor revision for this machine.
I’ve got the exact same machine. Starts great in the cold. If you live in the country it’s a must have.
First step I've found when diagnosing a gator is remove the bed. Only 2 bolts and connector. Makes you job alot easier
Called it, valves were all out. Edit, cam wiped? Or a valve seat broke? That .06 lash came from something
my ex's wok had one of those older gators, that always ran like shit when it ran, the valvetrain sounded bad, it constantly stalled/ bogged/ popped/ backfired/ died etc. Took it in to john deere and was told multiple times it was fine, that's how they ran
Hitch, winch, taller bed walls. Process some firewood.
Same with my bike. Mitsubishi fuel pump ZAR 300 (about 16 US) at Autozone, ZAR 21 000 (1150 US) at dealership
Yeah, no $500 for that starter? They have always been proud of their parts. They have fostered the image of reliable and friendly but nothing could be further from the truth.
The markup on parts goes to show you how much people get taken for!
Mustangs! Fine pieces of AMERICAN iron!
I agree. Very little plastic in that one.
The two of you had a lot of fun and good laughs over the gator, but the important thing is you got it running.
My good friend's uncle owns a 9 hole golf course in the U.P. and we used to take the Gator out on tournament days and act like security. We were only 16. Bad, bad idea to let us do that. After a while his uncle wouldn't let us stay up there anymore due to all the complaints we were getting. We trashed that Gator...hard. Roll overs and water hazards mainly. They were good tough hard working units though.
From 25:43 with that much wiggle room I’m thinking that the camshaft is destroyed. When I’ve had engines that needed the adjustment. Mainly on Brigs V-Twin engines they were maybe .003-.005” off spec causing the hard start. They barely ran that far off, but we’re hard to start.
I fought this exact symptoms on another engine, it was running and just died. Turns out the ignition lead from coil to distributor had just about rubbed through on a rubber hose and thus was losing spark. When you tested for spark it would have it on all cylinders but just will not fire. Caught it when exactly while cranking I saw a spark jumped out. Changed one lead , straight to life , 6 hours spent
Thanks Rich, we have enjoyed your videos in 2023 and look forward to 2024. Keep up the great work guys👌
Thank you! Hopefully head into your neck of the woods soon
@@DGHD if you’re coming to Sydney Australia anytime we can show you around mate
Big powa,,, big turbski is a must!!!
I run a 2005 hpx daily and love it. I have around 2700 hrs on mine with the original engine. Look forward to more videos.
I have one of these (an 05) and it's been great. Kids beat the tar out of it and it keeps going. Just an FYI when the front u-joints go out don't even look at Deere prices. (I think $600-700 USD each) They are available aftermarket. I paid around $200 for the pair.
5:25 That is a pretty cool "66. Probably belonged to the patriarc who passed away, which may explain the dust. Nice to see an original one too.
Happy new year 🎉
Wheel choices are in abundance. They share the same bolt pattern as the ford ranger etc
Glad you enjoyed your time here in the US
It’s fine everything is fine. A moto to live by.
Happy New Year, hosers!
I can't wait for more LLY content!
These can be very temperamental, i’ve worked on a number of these. I’ve just recently got one for the kids, a little 12 V battery one I love it and I’ve put lights on is so they can terroris in the dark !!!
They are beating that starter like a redheaded stepchild
Andy is a great addition to the team!
The gator might be cool as a test dummy for different ways to make power (turbocharger, supercharger, nitros ECT). See which makes the most or maybe which blows up the engine fastest. Perhaps combine all 3 for a final send off!
Happy New Year to you all !! First of all you MUST REPLACE the starter... Even you have a new battery this starter is so tired ,it can not turn over the motor..After this you will find the main problem...Have a good first day of the year Rich !!!
I’ve had 2,000 hours a John deer Kawasaki mower and it was a good machine
We used to have two old 4x6 gators with this engine. They needed constant tlc to run correctly.
Welcome to good ol' American hospitality! It's about the only thing we have left.
Dam good people. Been working in USA since 1976. Most people are very friendly
I figured cleaning the carb would fix the ole girl. Makes me wonder if that's all it was in the end? The valves obviously needed to be adjusted. Seems like the ignition module helped, too.
Way to go Rich, just keep throwing parts at it until it figures itself out lol😅 Great job with diagnosing the problem from the get-go with your help lol
I have a kawasaki mule 3010, it's pretty much the same machine. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one struggling to keep that finicky engine running as it should. I mounded a hydraulic cylinder and pump for the dump bed, I'll be following these videos looking for future mods. Keep up the good work!
We get em in at work half a dozen times a year or so, they either run flawless, or are a fuckin headache and the mules are such a pain to work on because of there setup if your doing anything more than sparkplugs 🙄 rear coil is nearly impossible, water pump is blocked in by clutches coolant flows thru intake, but when theyre a runner theyre a work horse
@braap802 if I adjust the governor to get more speed or if it, what are the chances it blows up?
It's important to note that these engines were a really dumb design in that didn't have a fuel map. It was just full throttle levels of fuel at any throttle. We used to idle ours a lot and it would flood so bad that it would fill the crankcase with fuel.
The solution was to always be running it hard on the throttle.
Having same problem with my brother in law. Found magnets below. Flywheel. I read as well the key way and flywheel could get damaged and walk around. Bye bye timing.
It would run great and run like crap and not start at all!
Those things are great Im 16 and that's what I learned how to drive in
Had many laughs watching this thanks, keep it up boys.
The neighborhood I live in has one main road in that lead to two bridges out. One has been condemed and closed, the other isn't far from the same fate. A bunch of friends and I have started buying golf carts to get around the neighborhood ans there isn't gonling to me much traffic for the next 10-15 years. Gas Yamaha G2 for $500 for the win! Adding turn signals, better lighting, cleaning, maintenance and upholstery and ill be in to it for a grand at most. Very functional little vehicles!
Just keep it around and use it like a yard donkey. Give it some love and it will serve you well for many years. I work on these for a living and they really like the regular maintenance.
That sounds like a good plan
Funny to see that one lad in coveralls a sweater and a touque, when you two are wearing t shirts 😂
Have you ever considered a sideline in comedy? BRILLIANT, thank you for the entertainment
Looks like you might need an alignment as well! 🤣
Torch tip files work great for cleaning carbs.
The Canadian boys wrenching in T-shirts meanwhile the Texan is in bibs and a beanie 😂. Must’ve been 50 that night
You have to tap on the top of canopy 3 times and get off the seat land on 2 times and look up the sky and crank should start 😂
A would think Kevins going to be wanting the GATOR
ALL THE BEST FOR NEW YEAR
Happy New Year to you and your family as well,I look forward to more videos in 2024 😀👍
You guys were all the way down in my neck of the woods! Would have loved to check out the F350 😁
After Many ,Many years of working on Kawasaki And Honda bikes all of which are 4 cylinder .. the best advice I can give would be to sync? and tune that Carb .. Ill make a world of difference and make it snappy ! Happy New year !
Nati near glad you had a good trip!
For sure have driven one of these at my grandparents. Grandpa is a hardcore JD fan - not the new stuff. All his stuff is 1940's-1980's. From what I remember it lasted forever. The only reason he got a new one was because he needed a bigger bed.
**After finishing the video, 100% my grandpa had one of these exact models. Was not his first one either. He upgraded from one of these to the 6-wheel model with a longer bed. He has had the 6 wheel one since at least 2016 and it still fires up after turning over twice and runs great.
He used to do tractor pulls. Had a pretty 'famous' JD 4010 in our local central PA area. I remember once my uncle was running it with nitro and threw a rod the whole way out of the block. Sprayed the audience with fuel and coolant - still managed a full pull. Grandpa rebuilt it with a new block and ran it for a decade after.
Happy Year. Look forward to to the always fantastic videos.
Paint it another color! I love JD stuff but the brand just gives me the ick with how they treat farmers and the equipment they OWN! 🤣
Nice golf kart Rich
I like videos that come out roughly the same time and day of the week. 40 minutes is long enough, in my opinion.
Suction screen in the fuel tank on the gators.
Pull the line up out of the top of the tank.
You forgot to try in Pennsylvania!
steering angle looks perfect 😁
Put some berrymans in the fuel system. Stuff is great for cleaning carbs.
This is the best channel out there love it
Thank you!
Spark plugs. Used one of these on the farm, letting it idle fouls the plugs and they cannot just be cleaned, new plugs are needed.
Those carbs are terrible - always plug up when you use any fuel with Ethanol. If you have an engine with this Carb then never ever run low octane/cheap fuel and if you want to keep the carb clean, install an on/off on your fuel line and each time you stop using the engine, turn the fuel off and let the carb run dry. That way you stop the carb having fuel sitting in it, which if it has Ethanol in it, it will gum up and block the fuel jets and cause hunting and fuel starvation issues for your engine. Brand new replacement Carbs are available for c.40 dollars on any online retail site (bolt off old and replace with new if you are not comfortable tearing the carb apart to try clean it).
Rich, those NiKi carbs in the Kawi twins are set way too lean on the pilot jet from the factory. Environmental crap? I have a Kawi Mule that had the exact same hard start and stumble issues. Richening up the pilot jet circuit fixed all that, now it starts easy and will idle cold.
looks pretty good as is once you get everything fixed and working.
maybe add a trailer hitch? heheh.
I wanna hang around you guys seem like I'll have a lot of fun working only problem is I live in Alabama. Be kind of a long way is to get up there to you where you are
Happy new year guys. Great video.
Water in the fuel will make it act very strange,...always star with new fuel 😎💯✌
Next winters project ! Turbo ... or see it there's some local kid that you can guide along , get them to do the work
Not sure how these are set up, if they have a proper oil pump and strainer, also what oil level it has but couple of my Honda machines struggle to start if the oil is low, To do do with acute angels when running, Just a thought. Been in a few around the farms, they are ok but I would get an old short body Daihatsu or similar cut the back off for running around the yard.
Put on some stickers and keep cleaning, it'll come round.
Rich is missing a lot of other viable tests that he can do, leak down testing, verifying timing, checking spark completion and integrity, although I love challenges when diagnosing it keeps the job fun.
Very entertaing video rich and the gang, happy newyear.
Spark plugs were changed right from the start, but I only have so many tools with me on the road
@@DGHDdid you have that thought after you cleaned the carb, I should have done that sooner? I ask cause I have done the same and when I finally do it I’m thinking why didn’t I do that sooner! Awesome video series, had me laughing along with y’all!
If I were closer I’d give you a R6 engine for it. I had it in a go kart, but it was suicidal to drive.
Yes Yes!! a turbo! 😀 Happy new year
I can't even tell you how many seemingly good coils I've had to replace on JD turf equipment.
Fun times. Thx
Obviously you need to find a small cat engine.
obviously
New squirrel cage and some fresh hamsters.
Why is it that on youtube everyone becomes a master tech lol
Anything painted JD green means get your wallet out and keep the aspirin handy.
Nothing runs (a bill) like a Deere..
petroleum jelly.
Thanks I think I will avoid JD when looking for a utv. Those prices are stupid
I hated working on the gator we had because of the kawasucki engine. I really wish john deere used honda engines.
Plastic camshaft missing a few Teath
Swap in a good snowmobile engine? Should be thousands of those rusting away up there!
