    I love owls. They are stealthy and mysterious. Getting a picture of one you must consider yourself lucky. Great horned owls are a beautiful bird. (my favorite) Seen a few, but never had my camera with me. Last year a Northern Saw Whet Owl was in a tree in my yard. I tried to duplicate his call. Next thing I knew, it flew down and landed next to me on my porch. I sat there for 30 seconds getting a close up of an owl one foot away from me before he flew off. Sometimes, the best things in life are events like this.

      Wow what an experience!! When i heard and watched video that great horned are aggressive among owls i said think i got my fav one!! Coz aggression reveals the true ability, personality, nature of the particular!!
      You an owl knowledgeier??? Just wanna ask is great horned can be as a pet and live among other pets ?? Affectionate towards its owner humans??

      The reason why I love owls it’s because they are mysteriously and serious like ik that it looks like it’s wearing glasses but there beautiful and having a good ability knowing what to grab their rodents or prey

    We have Great Horned Owls living in our neighborhood and calling every evening. I've seen a female taking wing on various occasions from pine trees around our houses - she's magnificent! Our backyard is also a certified wildlife habitat, and the Owls stay fairly close because of the rabbit, rat and squirrel population, as well as because of all of the other birds who feed at our house. We are SO lucky. Great Horned Owls are indeed beautiful and magical.....silent and deadly! I enjoy AmericanP's post - when I tried to sing back to our female, she left. I'll keep trying!

  • @Darkasknightfall
    @Darkasknightfall Před 3 lety +6

    Bald eagles have been seen attacking and expiring great-horned owls with relative ease. Eagles are more than a match for horned owls. Chicks can and do fall prey to great-horned owls but once the chicks reach a size near to their parents they are relatively safe from attack by horned owls. Also the greatest weight ever verified to be carried by any living bird of prey was a Bald eagle. It had carried off a 15 lb mule deer fawn that it eventually dropped and landed on a power line which caused a power outage in East Missoula.

    • @frankmorse7929
      @frankmorse7929 Před 2 lety +1

      @Darkasknightfall - quite true. Also, seasoned adult Red tailed Hawks, Ferruginous and Goshawks, especially females are on record killing adult great horned owls - especially in the daytime. Ghos are tough customers but so are many of the species of creatures they attack & often the owl doesn't always come out on top. Also, while they are strong, they cannot lift and carry off really heavy prey like an eagle. Ghos don't usually carry off 10 plus pound food items. Several pound like an adult rabbit or skunk are more common prey items and rats, mice & squirrels are even more common. Cats? Smaller feral cats or kittens yes but for the most part, a solid healthy 14- 15 pound plus adult cat a gho won't really mess with as a cat that size, especially a feral male could take the owl to the woodshed, if you get my drift. She embellished just a bit about these owls because they don't take just anything and everything- and even some of the prey items they do catch are on record turning the tide on the owl, killing it, such as another large eagle, hawk, snake that can constrict, porcupine, large cat etc etc. They don't have it that easy.

    Great Horned Owls are great hunters but they can't handle a Bald Eagle usually. Eagles have been known to kill owls that steal their nests. They even have been killed by Red Tail Hawks, but they usually can handle most hawks especially under the cover of darkness.

      I think that because Oscar is working a regular gig as a program ambassador bird that it would be very unlikely that this could occur. One always needs to be alert to the animal's presence/mood
      , reading its body language (stress, fear, etc) and any other display or sound that informs one of its emotional and physical states.

I could hear a GHO hooting in some tall trees nearby but thought nothing of it. Suddenly when my Jack was running for a ball the owl swooped in an hovered about 15ft above my dog for a few seconds I think sizing up whether my dog was small enough to go ahead and attack him for prey. My JRT was all muscle with huge canine's for a small dog and was a tough lil dog so I wasnt worried. I love these birds.

    While walking on a trail by my house on day I saw a GHO first and only time I've ever seen one It flew from one side of trail to the other perching in tree about 30ft up and clearly visible I watched it for 20 minutes. I couldn't't believe how big it was much much larger than Oscar. It didn't have that white breast marking, because of it's size and listening to the description I assume it was a female. It didn't seem to care about me at all but was focused on my dog (large dog) so I don't think it was contemplating attacking it, just watching it. I took some pictures of it. BTW my dog was oblivious to the owl didn't even know it was there. I was surprised to see it when I did it was around 4-5pm with plenty of daylight left. I thought they pretty much hide out during the daylight hours.
