  • The 16-year-old Chandani has a burning desire: She wants to follow in her father’s footsteps and become a mahout. A Mahout takes care of elephants. Chandani’s father Sunamabanda is one of the most experienced mahouts in Sri Lanka and chief-mahout in the Pinnawala elephant orphanage. He does not have a son to which he could pass on the family knowledge from many generations.
Against the other mahouts’ will, he decides to give his daughter a chance. He gives her responsibility for the young elephant Kandula. By working with this young elephant every day, Chandani must demonstrate that she is serious about her wish to become a mahout and that she is willing to learn the complicated tasks a mahout must know. But because Chandani is the first girl in a male profession, everyone doubts her abilities and the other mahouts strongly oppose her plans.
Outside her family, the wildlife ranger Mohammed becomes the only one to support her. He takes her into the jungle, shows her the world of elephants in the wilderness. On one of these trips, Mohammed and Chandani save a little elephant baby from its certain death.
Strengthened by this experience and her mentor’s support, she makes tremendous progress in the work with ‘her’ little elephant Kandula and develops a real emotional attachment to this animal. So she succeeds in persuading her father of her talent. As the first woman in Sri Lanka’s history, Chandani gains the permission to take part in the ceremonial and traditional elephant Perahera. She and the festively decorated Kandula participate in this religious elephant procession with pride, along with those who always doubted that she would ever become a mahout.
However, shortly thereafter, there is another test for Chandani. Kandula is now old enough to be released into the wild. Chandani is very sad, but she has learnt that the wilderness is the world into which her ‘little’ friend really belongs.
With tears in her eyes, she lets him go. But Chandani - the first female mahout in Sri Lanka’s history - knows that there are many new tasks and adventures waiting for her.

Great documentary! a lesson to learn. Wild animals should be left in their natural habitat, it was wrong for Chandani's father to buy the baby elephant, and have it tied in his front garden, as if it was a dog. So cruel? I am glad the law caught up with him and he had to return the elephant to the wild, that is where the baby elephant belongs. Chandani, please do not even dream of training an elephant to do tricks or use him for a circus, that is totally against nature and so cruel. I do not believe any animal being chained or tired, even a dog! Chandani, since you have a natural flare and an animal lover, please become a wildlife vet and help injured animals (wild elephants), you certainly have the knack for it! Why do they have so many thick chains around the poor elephant's neck?

I love elephants. We have 2 baby girls elephants born in captivity in our zoo in Tucson. The older one is Nandi and she is 5 now and her little sister Panzi who is 2 now.

Elephants are wild animals and should be in the wild. They are not domesticated work horses or dogs and even horses and dogs shouldn’t be tied up to a tree all day alone without companionship. Elephants are extremely sensitive animals that definitely shouldn’t be separated from their parents and extended family members as they don’t thrive well away from them. I also don’t like seeing them hit on their heads with sticks. Lek Chalet of Thailand is the true Elephant whisperer and her methods should be observed and taught as she lives with them and treats them with the upmost respect and dignity that they deserve. It’s sad to say that we as humans for some unknown reason feel the need to dominate the animals of this world for our own needs and entertainment instead of letting them be free to live in harmony with us.😔

Elephants are so sacred to Sinhala people. From The "great Kadol(B.C 161)" of king Dutugemunu. Lakhs of elephants were used in wars to protect Buddhism against Tamil Hindu invaders from South India. That's how Buddhism still exists in Sri Lanka. Because of that, Sinhala people have respect to elephants and tuskers. As a remembrance of the tuskers who sacrificed their lives to the protection of Buddhism, still the casket is being driven by an elephant.

Brutal. Elephants should not be captive anywhere. Leave them alone!

  • @NeeshaFerdy

An elephant belongs in the wild … definitely not tied up in homes. ❤😊

I watched several hours of The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya caring fororphan elephants and also mingling with wild elephants. Not ONE DID I SEE KEEPERS HOLDING STICKS OR DID I SEE CHAINS ON ELEPHANTS. This isn't helping elephants. This is a profit farm. Wonder why scammers come from India? It's all about money. 😢😢

In the beginning Why is the guy hitting the elephant in the head with a stick if this is a safe place for them?

  • @deloresmerrion6508

I guess they doing a good job. But why do they use sticks and chains. Is that the way the treat elephants in this country?

  • @srinikaganegoda6967

We'll wish her to be a good mahout, and to be the success of her future endeavors, not only be a mahout.

One of the best docs seen in a long time. Especially when she becomes the first female mahouts to lead the elephant in a parade. Broke the glass ceiling for the first time. Way to go...........
