  • Second stage of the Portuguese Way from Alverca do Ribatejo to Azambuja. The difficulty of the day lies in the distance and the danger of some sections of asphalt when leaving Alverca. We walk along the N-10, which soon begins to show signs of high traffic density. The "run over" signage and protective fences on the ground confirm the danger of walking along this stretch.
After almost 6 km. we leave the N-10 to enter Alhandra and walk along its riverside promenade. The change of environment is reassuring. We have ahead of us more than 4 km. of pedestrian walk accompanied by the occasional bicycle, along the Tagus River.
The mouchões are small islands that emerge from the waters of the Tagus River covered with vegetation, where we can observe birds on their migratory journey. The benches along the way allow you to enjoy the scenery.
In Vila Franca de Xira is the Fábrica das Palavras, located in what was once a rice husking factory and is now a library and cultural center. Next to it is the bust of Álvaro Guerra, writer and diplomat, who died in 2002. The sculpture Cais da Jorna rescues the memory of the men and women who congregated on the dock looking for work (which meant a day's work). Beyond the train tracks is the station, decorated with tile panels depicting daily life in Ribatejo.
Passing under the Marechal Carmona Bridge, we leave the riverbank to walk along long stretches of asphalt and unshaded land, with the railway tracks on our left and industrial complexes beyond. In Vala do Carregado, on the other side of the tracks, we find several establishments where we can recharge our batteries.
We continue along the Estrada Central, with the thermal power station on the right, some 3.4 km. without a hard shoulder and with a certain amount of traffic, which we drive carefully.
In Vila Nova da Rainha we visit the church of Santa Marta, where Nuno Álvares Pereira, hero of Aljubarrota, married Leonor Alvim in the 14th century.
We cross the railway tracks again to continue along a dirt track for about 5.5 km until we pass under the tracks and enter Azambuja, which was donated by Sancho I of Portugal to the crusader Childe Rolim, in 1200, for his help during the siege of Lisbon.
