Hi Kent, GOD truly bless you to be a blessing to all the grateful people who appreciate a blessing. Make sense? Imagine the time and effort you put in with the hope that an unknown like me might get better. You're reaching the world man, so pls kindly overlook the "ungrateful unlikers". Will get your books soon. Again, GOD BLESS you.
A generous comment and interesting point. I can say, modestly, that when I taught at Berklee, the students that didn't like me were the ones with the least talent... go figure. I hope I'm better than that now, and I don't take the thumbs down personally....but your comment touches my heart and keeps me going. So please keep watching and sending me comments. Many thanks and God bless! czcams.com/users/kenthewittpiano88playlists
What makes you a GREAT jazz pianist is not only a lifetime of developing your mad skills but your GENEROSITY....in sharing ALL your knowledge with us your viewers (and new fan!)
Dear Melissa, now I'm going to break up, because I'm a sap for those kind of words. I've struggled searching for meaning for a long time...and your comment really helps me. I was not given the gifts to become famous, but everyone needs to feel the importance of a meaningful life. I wish the same for you. And I wish the same for anyone reading this. (please write to me your story) Bless you!
never get tired hearing from your magnificent lessons. From France, with great pleasure, keep on going so nice, Ken
Thanks so much!
I saw the McCoy Tyner trio in Newcastle, UK, back in 2005. The show was spectacular and I had never heard voicings like that...I was blown away. Your videos are phenomenal -- thanks for breaking some of this down -- even just a few of the basics! Gonna try some of this out now...
That's great...thanks for telling me this!
Definitely with you Teach! Tyner is definitely jazzzzz! The past IS the key to the present and while some of the "newer" stuff is way too high for me, Tyner and Monk were still melodic enough for my "old" ears. Keep om swinging!
You keep swinging. I'm old school too...love the legendary jazz masters and saw most of them live.
I'm still with you and will remain so! So very instructive, thanks Kent. Practice, practice, practice...
+morcus1000 Thank you! Absolutely right. Practice is the key word and the great reward!
Those nimble fingers....Uber awesome
Many thanks!
Excellent topic. Looking forward to part 2. Also, don't worry too much about "losing people", as you say. Your videos on CZcams satisfy a very niche market. So many jazz tutorials are either too basic (explaining over and over how to play triads or simple scales), or are just videos of people displaying technical ability with little explanation. Your videos are unique because you not only display technical skill, but also provide some insight into what is going on. You demystify the magic of the jazz style. I think your videos are reaching their intended audience superbly. If somebody thinks you are going too fast then they simply aren't ready for these lessons yet. The majority of comments on your videos speak for themselves. You're doing a great service for aspiring jazz pianists.
+Lucas Cram Thanks, Lucas. And so well said. You are a true friend. I'm printing out this statement and putting in my special collection to always treasure. Sorry if that's corny...but I really appreciate your words and support. You're always there for me....keep watching (part 2 up next)
Lucas Cram well put
Love every every every lesson you donate..thanks.You are awesome.
My most humble thanks for your great compliment!
This is wonderful. I am learning every day. Back to the piano.
Wonderful!
2:25 that lick!
Awesome energy love it!
Thanks from Germany. You are the best teacher in Jazz I ever found. And you are really a great piano player.
That is a supreme compliment, Alex, from Germany. I played a tour there quite a few years ago and loved the country and people. They were very big appreciators of American jazz. Thanks!
I would like to see (hear) you again in Germany.
Your Summertime arrangement is a fabulous workout for 4ths practice. Really enjoy that, thank you.
Thanks for that comment. ...please check out my other videos on 4th voicings esp. Green Dolphin St.

Kent, thank you so much for all your fascinating tutorials. I 'm 73 years and I've probably left it a little late to change my style of playing, buy your really great lessons have given me the appetite to try.
Wow! Really clear explaination. Thanks for posting this video.
been looking for anyone that can make sense to me and so far every single video i've watched is eye opening - when i have a more convenient way to watch and play at the same time ill rewatch all of them, thank you
Love it! Thanks Kent!
Of course this was helpful!! It sure calms down a lot of anxieties for an ear player like myself who has always been able to play tunes fairly accurately by ear and then suddenly CAN'T follow the Bill Evans' style because of the 4th voicings. The 3 4th notess stay STILL (ok change slightly between augmented, perfect) and he's simply moving the bass notes to create the illusion of the chords being played at random.... THAT'S what gives him that BEAUTIFUL SLICKNESS and originality to his sound and makes it so cutting edge even though it was done 50+ years ago. Thanks for rejuvenating my ear's confidence.... All of your other lessons are GREAT because they're SO tightly integrated. IE you learn 5 to 8 thing at once without it being a pedagogically focused mindless drill like they torture classical pianists with all so often. Brilliantly taped lessons.
+philburpalooza8 Hey Phil, that's a great comment, man, it feels really good to know my videos can help when you're relying on your ear hearing accurately. That's an important issue and I should do more videos on ear training because it's such an important part of playing music well. Also I appreciate your comment about my lessons being integrated. Big thanks!
Kent! This is awesome !!! Thanks so very much! Please continue 👍👍👍👍
+Spero Jildeh I will, and thanks for telling me. Part 2 is coming up this week, please check in!
thanks from the Doctor. I took lessons with Paul Schmelling at Berkelee for a while. great teacher as well. I loved your tutorial thanks Dr Schembri
Thanks, Dr. I taught at Berklee one year ('82)when Paul was the head of the piano dept. Great player!
This is a real great way to learn to achieve the sounds of jazz. Kent is the best teacher & a fine person in his commitment to help others.
Dear Lewis, Your comment does my heart good because I worked hard in my music and I'm grateful for the talent and for all the advantages I've had, so I want to pass on the knowledge. Many thanks!
I'm pretty sure I've posted before, but I just wanted to convey my appreciation for your time in creating high-quality, concise lessons for musicians of different levels. I've been a musician for +10 years and have learned more this last year with a new endeavor into jazz piano than my own collective experience of the last 5 years on my main instrument. Thanks for sharing your experience and I always look forward to more content!
Thanks, Patrick, your words and inspiration are very helpful to me, to keep going.
This lesson is a gem! Love the fresh sound this creates on such a predictable tune
That's a very cool comment...and you are exactly right...thanks!
You don't know how you help me with your tutorial, thanks so much.
Glad to hear that!
Thank you once more for this masterclass. You are a very good educator. The ambiguity of these chords makes them so modern. We live in ambiguous times.
You are right....and the ambiguity has challenge and fun within it.... and it is more fun to be "modern"...I think !
Please somebody make this man the president. Great stuff. Please Kent talk at length and go in as much detail as you wish, i think you have an audience for that too! Love your videos sir, you are passing on the tradition. Much respect!
Splendid comment....very encouraging and keeps me going...thanks!
Thanks from Colombia. You are a great máster. Thanks for your time and your joy
I humbly appreciate your kind words of support...it was only from hard work and dedication, and if I can bring joy.... then that is my reward.
Thanks from another Colombian. I am living in Madrid Spain. Yesterday I downloaded plenty of your different pieces and scales and begun playing and trying to improvize as per your invitation. and because I have been also exploring a bit flamenco scales and rhythms as well as and a bit of "jazzmatic" from Giovanni Allevi I begun bouncing from one scale to the other AND IT WAS SIMPLY WONDERFULL !!!!! just to let you know I am very grateful for all the fun I am having and will have with your lessons and music sheets.
John...Thanks for telling me....It's very helpful to me to get such a positive vibe on what I'm doing here. All the best!
Kent thank you very much.Awesome.I learned a lot with your lesson.God Bless You
I appreciate your kind comment, Alfredo. God bless.
excellent lecture here's an example that you have to be the right age to talk about music. I admire and greet you
Thank you! 😃
Kent my man! I'm with ya! I have been playing Summertime in standard chord structures forever. I have always heard the cool variations you have shown on this video by jazz folks that blew me away. This video final has it make sense! This will keep me busy for at least a week, trying variations on the accompaniment under the melody. Thanks again!
Love your videos. I’m 65 and teaching myself on my Baby Grand. ( playing Tenor Sax since I was 38) Love the twist you put on the old tunes. Refreshing ! Thanks a lot.👌
I appreciate your perceptive comment.
You do a great goodness for us like a pianists. Thanks a lot!!!

Dr.Kent Hewitt you have helped me tremendously with my piano playing I'm a gospel musician and have been playing for the last 20 to 22 years always wanting to learn jazz now I'm stretching out to attempt it and these techniques will be helpful to me thank you

Another great lesson!
F'n manic! I like it. Keep thinkin' like that. It does my mind good!
Thank you for teaching an advanced topic in a very learnable way. You also have very good quotes and knowledge of jazz!
+Richard Xu Thank you for your expression of appreciation. That's what keeps me going.
brilliant and utterly captivating. More please...
+James Sullivan James. That's a great comment and so affirming, I am grateful! Please check out my channel page for all my videos in categories. Thanks!
Kent - Great, Great stuff! Your material and ideas re-program my over half--a-century of playing. Thank you so much!!!
Steve, that's a very cool thing. Thanks for the great comment!
As always Kent, a great lesson. You have a great way of teaching. The way you explain and play the different techniques stays with you even if it isn't written down. The sign of a great teacher. Years ago I studied arranging and composition with a teacher by the name of Gordon Delamonte, and he had the same teaching methods. Thanks to teachers like you, I am still performing even tho I'm well into my late sixties. Thanks so much for all your musical generosity.
Hi Joe. That's a great comment and very affirming for me. This You Tube thing is a totally new experience for me. So I'm very glad to hear that I come off in a positive way... and that it is beneficial to you. I will consider it an honor that you rated me in the league with your past teacher. Many Thanks!
Gracias master Kent.....Long live for you....
Thanks for the nice words!
You're welcome....I am studying with you master...Summertime modal, my first lesson....Thanks
That was amazing. Your understanding and style of teaching are both fantastic. For me you just "turned on a light", helping me to finally visualize what I had been previously been struggling with. I encourage you to go deep. Don't worry about losing people. There are plenty of simplified videos, but so few that explain the magic as you just did. Thank you so much.
+Murray Macdonald That's a great compliment. I know I'll probably never have as many subscribers as some others do, but I believe I have a really great fan base. I hear from people all over the world, from so many walks of life...it's very gratifying for me.....and challenging to keep up with the responses and requests. Thanks for the affirmation and for giving me "a lift!".
Ken, I'm with you on this "modern" stuff...Keep it coming buddy....don't you ever stop. Nothing is modern, they are just great sounds for the soul...!!!
Agreed...and thanks so much for the comment!
Mr. Kent! I’ve learned so much from you. And I’ve grown as a musician to the point that I am ready to receive the heady stuff such as this is - while at the same, still more mysteries remain to be revealed! Oh, what fun! Much gratitude from a thirty-four-year-old apprentice 🙏🏼
You have so much of life ahead of you....I wish I could have learned all this at your age....blessing, brother!
Thank you so much for these videos. Things that I heard on records and thought were way over my head and could never understand you put it in the most approachable way by far! I am becoming a better player because of your videos thank you for your great contribution to youtube!
Thank you...that comment is very helpful to me.... so that I stay motivated to keep doing this!
Excellent. Thanks for posting!
Thank you!!
You're the BEST Jazz Teacher!
I really appreciate the affirmation!
This tutorial is amazing. It seems so simple. So many thanks. Please Kent Hewitt some more vidéo on modern Jazz.
Thanks so much for the affirmation...keeps me going!
I'm with you all the way. Very instructive. Thanks!
+AnEnormousBBFan Thanks for hanging in there with me . It means a lot to me!
Great video. I love the way you explain these theoretical concepts and use them in songs. Thank you Kent.
That's very affirming for me...so many thanks for telling me!
great job,Kent!!!Thank you!!!!
Thank you!
Excellent Ken! Bobby D. here, love your lessons, I am 62 and still play out with my Trio in upstate NY, your lessons inspire me greatly!! Thank You so much!!
Bobby, I'm glad to hear from you and that the lessons are inspiring. Trio gigs are hard to come by these day...keep up the good work!
Kent love the pentatonic little riff there.. that scale used right perks a song up. is in the music .
Great video, I really enjoy how you explain things. It's often hard to take it all in when listening to most people.
+Donathon I could probably do better if I had the time to write a script. But I don't, so I'm glad there is clarity otherwise. So thanks so much for the affirmation!
Great video Kent, can't wait for the second part. Great presentation, you didn't loose me once. You always present things in a way where they are easy to understand even if the subject matter is complicated. You are a great teacher. Thank you for all you do for us. Your videos are the best jazz piano instruction videos on the internet.
+Bill Pappas Thanks so much, Bill, for your loyal support and for sending me this affirmation. Thanks again for coming here for a lesson and for your generosity. I wish you all the best in your musical journey and may we always be friends!
Kent, this really is essential for quartal applications. Those quartal voicings perf. & aug. (#9 voice shapes, etc....) morph into so many other chord structures, functions, colorations. Keep sorting out the ambiguity for everyone !
Thanks for the comment. Please check out my playlist on Fourth Voicings and Modal Jazz. czcams.com/play/PLFuMibnl_h5b7S_N16zn1cmE7R1udYjxL.html
Hi Mr Hewitt. I'm amazed with your explanations! They are very funny and straight to the point. I always tried to reach what I considered unreacheable which is learning jazz piano. With your help I started to understand a bit more. I'm really enjoying your videos! Thanks from Brazil!
Thanks so much for the comment, compliments , and affirmations!
Thanks for sharing. Rediscovered your video and still learning something new from it.

Watching the video was so nice and a breeze to my soul! You made it so simple. Thanks a lot!
Great for me to know...thanks!
I love love love your video. Briliant. Please, do more
Thanks so much!
Hey, Kent, love you for what you do, it's so generous of you for one, and I always learn something! I am 81, so been playing piano a long time and still eager to learn. Didn't have the band experience, so not tested in the fire. Curious as to why 'modal' implies 'fourths'? That's a leap you made early in the video. But I love the sound. I'll play around with the ideas you demonstrated in this video. I think I'm already doing it, I use F#-C-F, G-Db-Gb a lot, which can be dominant #9 or dominant 13th depending on the root added. Thanks!
Hi Joe,
Modal just refers to a jazz concept in which quartal harmony is used instead of block chords. Often it relies on a predetermined mode. Chords are built on 4ths instead of 3rds... and this allows for pentatonic scales. ( note scales with larger intervals rather than just major seconds and half steps.) It's a more modern sound and changed the sound of jazz harmony and melodic improvisation in the 1960's and 70's. Also modal tunes had fewer chord changes and were freer in terms of improvising over fewer chords.
Boss Cat Daddy! That's it! Thanks!
Coool...thanks!
thanks thanks thanks, just in a few days i try play this songs, thanks!
Thanks for telling me!
Thanks for posting your videos they have been a great help for me
Thanks for the vote of confidence....keeps me going..swing loose!
great lesson! thanks so much
Appreciated!
I have learned more from your lessons than I have learned from my Jazz piano teacher that I had years ago. Keep doing what you are doing.
I'm glad you are learning useful things from my videos ...and I'm grateful that I now have the time to do this. If I didn't hear from folks like you, it would be futile.
Hey Kent! Thanks so much for posting all those wonderful tutorials! I have taken up jazz piano again and profit immensely from your enlightening videos! Please keep posting!!
Thanks for the kind words and affirmation!
Think its a Great tutorías have not sat down at my piano but I've gone over the lesson twice very good.
Great tutorial please keep them coming man
+greg poulter I promise to keep doing it, please keep sending the positive vibes... Thanks!
Kent , Being a percussionist that did get to study with Lee Callahan for a couple of years at the Conservatory, I did pick up a few things from this and some of your other tutorials. Love the way that you approach this stuff.
I'm with you. Keep it up. Thanks!
+Victoria Summers Please stay with me and keep watching. Thanks!
Bad ass glasses .. much love from brazil
I did look weird in this...now I kind of dig the look...thanks!
Wow, fantastic stuff! I can't thank you enough for sharing.
Thanks for the compliment!
I really enjoyed this video
Thanks for telling me...means a lot!
6 years ago Kent.. but 'So What!' Gettit.?( Sorry!)
So much to chew on here and makes me realise that I could be using these 4th voicings more when playing standards etc to sound more 'modern'. I need to work on this. So thanks once again for being so generous with your time and presenting with clarity this approach to voicings that originated in the 50s. The pentatonic scales work so well with them. It opens up a whole other world of possibilities..
Thanks again for the tutorial from the ranch!
Lucian
nice explanation.. i've learn some theory for modal jazz, you've made clear what i've confused before
this is great Kent how ever I like combing Gershwin and Chopin now ill add Kent and Tyner to it this shall really enhance it
Awesome tutorial !!
Thanks so much!
Amazing Musician!
Many, many, thanks!
Awesome! Thanks for the detailed discussion, tasteful arrangement, amazing chops, and quality recording. I’m definitely with you. Thumbs up.
+Marcus Orr Thanks, Marcus. Your words are a thing of beauty to my ears. Thanks again for the affirmation!
Great rendition of Summertime. You surely have given new life to this traditional jazz standard. The augmented 4th concept adds "cajun" flavor to this tune. Another classic from the "Jazz Ranch." Many thanks and many blessings.
+David Faria David, thanks for a great comment. It's gratifying to know that...keep watching!
Excellent Video Kent! This is exactly the kind of piano info I need right now for where I am at on the piano. About to do my first piano solo gig. So this info comes in real handy! Thanks Kent keep up with those Great Piano Videos of yours ! Like a lot of other people they really help me a lot!
Thanks for the comment and the support. Good luck with the gigs!
How good can it get? Dozens of videos crammed full of professional instruction. A small library of sophisticated arrangements. After a lifetime (age 63) of musical pursuits, I have finally found the perfect source of instruction for my skill level. You must have invested weeks of effort in making this stuff available for us lucky freeloaders out here. Though it sounds so insufficient, all I can say is that I realize how fortunate I am that people like you are on my side. Thanks.
+David Gerber Thanks so much! Comments like yours are what keeps me doing this. Also I learn things just from the work and prep I put into it. I actually think I'm playing better this year than a year ago when I started this. Plus I'm selling more books, so it all works out.
Great ! Greetings from Brazil !
I hope to visit Brazil someday. Thanks for the comment!
Another wonderful video! Many thanks to you Kent for sharing your knowledge - i must admit I am struggling a little to understand all of the chord choices you make but as you point out, this is the "modern" modal sound - essential for a grounding in jazz.
looking forward to your next video.
Andy
+A.D Selinger The next video will extend it... but perhaps another version of this one would be helpful. It is complicated, I admit. Thanks!
