A Shepherd's Journey (with English Subtitles)

- This short film follows Narender Kaith, a Gaddi shepherd from the Kaobil village in the Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh. Every year he and his fellow Gaddis take a herd of around 1500 sheep and goats across the Bhabha pass from the Kinnaur region of Himachal Pradesh to Spiti. This video is about his life, his journey and the difficulties faced along the way.
I spent about 40 days travelling with the shepherds to make this video. Meeting Narender in the Bhabha valley was a completely random coincidence and I thank my lucky stars for that meeting. We were not that well acquainted on our onward journey from the Bhabha Valley to the Pin Valley. I was camping a bit away from the shepherds and cooking my own food. But we became much closer on the return journey and I was soon eating, sleeping and living in their camps. I was following truly in the footsteps of the nomads!

M from Uttrakhand and my grandfather was a shepherd..every year for six to eight months he wud go with the sheeps to many many vallies and comes back home with lot of fruits, dry fruits,dry meats,and many more things to eat...and yes some incredible jungle stories too...till date I have not seen a person like him...he spent half of his life with sheeps but was so humble and so strong mentality and physically... H used to carry gas cylinder at his back and every day 15 to 20 km walk he used to do...never seen him sick or tired..always full of energy..always making us laugh..he is my idol ..

We stayed in Simla in 1987. A local man told us people usually do not close their doors because nobody steals there. i was amazed with the honesty of the ordinary people there.

This is one of the most surreal presentation of the lives of himalayan mountain tribes. It seems the gaddis see sheeps as their children and this journey to land with nutritious grass is more about care of these livestocks & emotions than any economic considerations.
It is romantic to think that way. They do care about their animals but it is mostly for economic reasons than anything else. But there are exceptions here as well, as always.
@@indiainmotion So if the economics of this practice trumps over its traditional aspect then there should be no doubt if the future generation will continue this, unless the community moves towards a more settled lifestyle or take up other economic activities.

You might be wrong about that
Ancient Kinnauras are said to be spread across to the bank of ganga
And both KinnauRi and gharwali have many similarities in their culture ( as far as I know )
its humbling to see how our country respects its animals. They are indebted to the animals. I love the fact that we worship our animals. It makes us appreciate everything in life.

And beautiful high altitude lakes , and one of highest passes Kunzum la

now a days lot of people visiting this valley and spoiling It too with plastic and trash.
Buy few good tourists and locals out thier helping to keep this place beautiful .
Lack of tourist infrastructure in most parts of Himalayas

It could take 1 to 2 days to reach this types of places from the nearest places on foot
