      True, and also
'Sounding of the clock that ticks/get used to it somehow' is followed by Lars simulating that 'ticking' with the muted cymbals.
(In my opinion) the little lead part by Kirk throughout the song is almost like the trumpet (?) tune they used to play at war to indicate different actions like 'Charge' or 'Fall Back' .
Metallica always had these kind of small touches/flavors to their music and i believe it was/is largely an impact of Cliff.

My father actually advised me to not join, but being the rebellious teen, I joined. That being said, could you explain why it's a bit sad? I respect your opinion and want to learn from it. First let me say, I respect everyone's rights and reasons for choosing that option; hell, I even tried to enlist back in the day.
But, as the tone of the song lyrics point out, it seems like an unending feeding of flesh into the meat grinder of war. With those in higher positions seemingly giving little to no care and regard about those that they send to their premature deaths.
Patriotism is admirable for what it is, but it just saddens me to see successive generations in certain families continue to jump into that fray.
Not to cast dispersions, but I'm also forced to wonder if your father was aware of your rebellious streak and used a bit of reverse psychology on you. đŸ€·đŸ»â€â™‚ïž

My very favorite is Orion, but as much as they annoyed my with their hardcore anti-piracy stance, they really do have a lot of really great music over the years. My first album was And Justice. Harvester of Sorrow 24x7 for months after that, lol.
P.S. Metallica is definitely a Studio Version First kinda band, IMO. While they are good live, they are also greatly enhanced by studio magic.

I went to a secret gig when they played as Damage Inc. I can't remember now if it was supporting Metal Church at the Marquee club in 1990 or the 100 Club in '87. They came on to a half-empty floor at the Marquee. Great memories!!

Lu Ger You rally can’t do metal better than this. The writing A+, every member shows out, amazing transitions, beautiful solos, and the band is as tight as humanly possible. Also, Hetfield’s right hand is a machine gun. His down picking is unrivaled. Just incredible.

The time signature changes and the so many ways they change the beat and rhythm are just amazing.

Apart from fleeing to Canada to keep from being drafted, the only ways that you could avoid being drafted were:
If you were mentally or medically unfit for military service
      You're a a college student
One of your parents was a senator or some other type of government official

@Tammy T I served in the Marines as well.Thankfully I never went to the ME to fight in the oil wars.I'm going to drop a quote by MajGen Smedley Butler USMC.Your husband will recognize his name I'm sure........“I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents.”

Thanx for this, sir...I saw my reactions in you, when I heard this song for the first time...I was 14 that day! I had to grab my english dictionary for translation, and after finding out what it's all about, even MORE shivers ran up and down my spine every time I listened to that song, and so it is until today...I'm 48 yet! ;-) METALLICA are the best!!!

The music of this song has a fury in it that perfectly goes with the imaging in the lyrics.
