That's because they were good people who had been subjected to horror. They were likely just relieved that they had survived. What's the common trope for mass shooters in America? Religious extremism, next to no social life, lack of fulfillment, envy and immaturity. We have an epidemic of man-children with open access to firearms.

My grandma grew up during the Blitz in Liverpool. And she would tell stories of how their mother would cram them under the stairs and throw herself over her, her older sister and her younger siblings and repeatedly tell them Gaelic (they were Catholics from Cork Ireland originally) “Be still!! Keep Quiet!” And they would listen to the bombs fall every night. They wouldn’t know if they were going to be blown up the next minute or the next day, and they didn’t know if their Dad and older brother would be killed while patrolling the streets and making sure all lights were out. Years later when visiting us, the local fire department’s siren would go off and my grandma would freeze with a look of terror on her face and just start weeping because it sounded like the air raid sirens. I get chills thinking that without the English Channel separating them from the rest of Europe my grandma and her family could’ve very well met the same fate as the other Holocaust victims.

I’ve always wondered why they never rushed the guards as they greatly outnumbered them. But it was definitely a difficult situation to find yourself in. Shocking dark time in history for sure.
Nazis used lies and manipulation, machine guns and guard towers, barbed wire fences and concrete walls. If there were an uprising in one camp, how long would it be before the Nazis seized back control and tortured the Jews even worse. The Butcher of Birkenau was not alone in their tendencies. People are not being round up and murdered en mass publicly, this is not currently happening in the United States.
Little story, So I am born Irish catholic and i truly am a very good person. I don’t have any hatred in my heart for anyone of different race, religion or sex. The reason I mention this is because when I was about 10 years old I and a neighborhood buddy were drawing big swastikas all over the street in chalk thinking that it was funny. We were laughing while drawing them until my mother came outside and saw what we were doing! She beat the daylights outta me and in a fit of anger tried to explain what the swastika meant and how that it is just a symbol of pure hatred against Jewish people. I did to a certain extent understand what she meant but she wanted to make sure I fully understood so she drove to Blockbuster, rented Schindlers List and made me watch it! Watching that movie at the age of 10 really opened up my eyes to the evils in this world that can be brought upon people that just have different beliefs, different religions or different skin colors.

I have my Masters in Film,… so here’s professional input. I believe there are 4 films you should have to see in your life and this is one of them. And if this film does not inflict something in you by the end, you have no moral compass. I cry every time I watch it too. I cry when he thinks of how many more he could save. I never met my great grandmother, i was adopted as a baby and found her recently still alive now in her 90s. Sadly she didn't want anything to do with me once she found out I was half black, she spewed such hatred at me and all I could think to say back before walking away was "You entire family was murdered by the Nazis because of racial and religious discrimination and yet you hate me for being half black? I wish Schindler saved someone from your family more worthy. Even if that means i wouldnt have been born."
I don't regret those words. She's a vile, evil woman.
No one deserved the horrors of the camps, but some of them were still bad and not very nice people. It is OK to admit it.

I struggle to find why the Jews and other didn’t fight back. I assume sometimes that it was because they were slowly but surely programmed to not fight or question the government. Or perhaps they could not believe that mankind was capable of so much evil and therefore led like lambs to the slaughter. It’s almost as if though fear was bred into them. I feel as though I see it happening here in the US now.

We were laughing while drawing them until my mother came outside and saw what we were doing! She beat the daylights outta me and in a fit of anger tried to explain what the swastika meant and how that it is just a symbol of pure hatred against Jewish people. One thing I learned the hard way from building some amazing projects who then had management that replaced me with nearly worthless workers was that however valuable You Think You Are if you don't make the management to feel good you're not valuable in the way they need. Your only value is in how good you make management *FEEL*.
This is why business school is such a disaster for American industry because it used to be you worked your way up through the ranks and you knew exactly how to make things work and manage people because you had been there! But with the Advent of business school you can just go straight from high school to management having never actually worked a serious day in your life which also means that you can't tell who is competent and so you can only hire people based on how they make you feel and not on their performance.
Some knew what was going and some were oblivious to it.
