George Edward Maxwell Wright , Max Wright, (August 2, 1943 - June 26, 2019) was an American actor, known for his role as Willie Tanner on the sitcom ALF (1986-1990).
Wright was born August 2, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan. He moved to the suburb of Southfield as a child, graduating from Southfield Senior High School in 1961. While a student at Southfield, he was very active in the theatre program and had leads in two different musical productions.
Wright made supporting appearances on television shows such as WKRP in Cincinnati, and was a regular cast member on Misfits of Science, AfterMASH, Buffalo Bill, and The Norm Show, and the made-for-TV adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand. He appeared in the first and second seasons of the sitcom Friends as Terry, the manager of Central Perk. He played Günter Wendt in the 1998 HBO miniseries From the Earth to the Moon and Dr. Josef Mengele in Playing for Time.
From 1986 to 1990, Wright appeared in the sitcom ALF as Willie Tanner, a typical father of a middle-class family, who finds an alien who has crash-landed on Earth. Despite becoming his best-known performance, the actor despised the role due to its huge technical demands and the fact that he, a human, played a supporting character for an "inanimate object". "It was hard work and very grim", he stated in a 2000 interview to People. He was also, reportedly, very happy when the show was canceled in 1990. "I was hugely eager to have it over with", he said in the same interview. According to his co-star in the show, Anne Schedeen, "there was one take, and Max walked off the set, went to his dressing room, got his bags, went to his car, and disappeared. Nobody had to say, 'Wrap,' and there were no goodbyes". However, Wright later admitted that as the years passed he looked back at ALF with less animosity and conceded that "It doesn't matter what I felt or what the days were like, ALF brought people a lot of joy."
Wright was married to Linda Ybarrondo from 1965 until her death from breast cancer in 2017. The couple had two children.
In 1995, he was diagnosed with lymphoma, which was successfully treated and remained in remission until 2019. He died from the disease on June 26, 2019, at the age of 75 at the Lillian Booth Actors Home in Englewood, New Jersey.
Max Wright is buried in Linden, Michigan at Fairview Cemetery.
Used to be my favourite show as a kid Alf. Sometimes we just don't realise what these actors go through in their personal life. Thanks for doing this video Scott. I learnt so much about these celebs over the years and its all thanks to you Scott. You are a true Gem to this earth 😊
-#cheers-
Dumbest ur learned something not learnt something lol😂
I had a crush on his wife on the show, still do ,lol
I'm very proud to say that, in my 20's, I became a charter member of the ALF FAN CLUB!!!
I loved that show!
I loved Alf as an 80's kid. I appreciate hearing the "Real Stuff" from his life because we are all humans and none of us are perfect and we make mistakes throughout life and it makes us who we are, death doesn't change anything. You handled it respectfully and it made him seem more human and real in my eyes.
I missed watching ElF in the 80's, but i watch ir today: i think he was a really good actor: you can really see his skill.
@@jenniferkaven4455 ALF
My daughter loved Alf, she was born in 1986, and she watched the show as a little girl, I even bought her a stuffed animal Alf. Who knows, maybe the cancer that he had did something to him, to where he wasn't thinking right (drugs) or didn't care anymore. I noticed his mother died the same year as him. RIP Max Wright.
Always loved watching the show. All the actors were great .RIP Max Wright and the other actors that have passed on...
He brought me alot of joy as a child. I truly don't care what he did in the privacy of his home/wherever so long as he wasn't hurting anyone. Which, he wasn't. Thanks for the great memories Max.
I had no idea he passed. Alf was a great sitcom. Part of all us 80’s kids childhood. Thanks for this Scott🤍
I loved him and ALF’s relationship. They kept me rolling. Even my grandparents i their 60s never missed an episode. Thank you for taking us to visit Willie Tanner ❤
ALF is my absolute favorite sitcom of all time, never has a show been developed with that type of bizarre humor, the interaction between Max Wright and Alf is priceless, Max's way of playing Willie Tanner is one of a kind and I watch the entire 4 seasons, at least once a year with my brother whom also has it as his favorite sitcom ever =)
RIP Max, you still make us happy whenever we watch your work.
Scott, not only are your vids very interesting, but what I like best about your narration is that you have a heart and don't denigrate the subjects in your stories for their human failings, which we all have. Thanks, man.
That’s so nice of you to say thank you
Ich liebte Alf schon als Kind und habe die Serie komplett auf Dvd. Werde sie im Herbst, wenn das Wetter wieder ungemütlich wird ansehen. 🙂 Danke für den respektvollen Umgang. RIP Max. 🕯🌹
We loved Alf!! I still have the stuffed animal!! Honestly, we need more shows like Alf now. We loved all the wholesome family shows.
I concur
Better writers back then
@@puffchick4197 I miss the family shows!!
I totally agree, I loved Alf would have enjoyed having a real one LOL, I also have the stuffed Alfs, my Son bought me Alf things for my birthdays and Christmas because I liked him so much, I need to find a home for them as my Grandkiddos ages 17 and 19 aren't interested, I also loved Baby Sinclair years later, we sure need funny wholesome shows like them !
@@monsterglo Yes!! Not the Mama!! I truly miss those shows
@@gatrgurlfl3980 There are some full episodes on CZcams of both Alf and Dinosaurs , I still laugh so hard I nearly pee my pants lol
What a sad story about Max. Thank you Scott for telling and sharing this video about Max. May he rest in peace 💞
Hello
Rest in peace Max, thank you for sharing your talent with us over the years.
Alf is an Iconic character
I remember watching Alf and Max Wright playing on the show. RIP Max
Alf best show in the 80's
I love how respectful Scott is!!! I loved the show when I was little. Artie Lang definitely got into trouble himself, but its so nice to hear when someone turns themselves around and lives a safer, more healthy life. All the actors on A.L.F. found it frustrating just because of the difficulty of shooting around a puppet. I had an A.L.F. lunchbox in second grade. 🤣
Sadly; it's not uncommon for men in Hollywood who may be gay to have a wife and kids. Going all the way back to the big Studio days; actors were told explicitly to get married or else be fired and blacklisted. This is still going on today but as society is more accepting of all lifestyles it's dissipating.
This is very true but it wasn't just done to men, women were told the same as well. It's very sad that we as a people can't let others do their job and go home to do what we want for ourselves....to live life on our own terms. Maybe one day people will realize that no one owes you shit and if you don't like something but it isn't hurting anyone leave it alone move on live your own life. Also some of these women and men these actors and actresses are forced to marry are unaware of what is going on same as their kids, you gotta feel for them as well. Bad situations all around.
Not really.. some wives even suspect their husbands are Bi-Sexual. Except they don't have the courage to wear their own truths. Many men who are married are secretly sleeping with homosexual Men. They are embarrassed and refuse to embrace their "true-selves" unfortunately. .v
@@gigigiseleworld now to be fair I said some don't know not all and they said it's not uncommon for this to happen but yes you are right some have feelings of what is going on or even find out and stay for many reasons. My point was that it was all very sad that ppl have to pretend for others and bring others into the lie especially children
@David Welch yup so true 😮
John Travolta is a good example.
I don’t care what he did. I judge him for his acting skills and I loved that. Rest in peace.
I try not to care either but picking up homeless men to have sex and smoke crack with them is pretty sick. This was a multi millionaire as well so he had other options lol
Like Gael García Márquez once said. Every human being has 3 lives 1. Public life, private life, and a secret life. I sometimes would watch Alf. Great video,Scott.
I remember watching Alf then going to school the next day and laughing about it with friends. Had no idea about his private life.
Alf! What a nostalgic time! I was a 80s kid! ❤ best memories!
RIP max wright
Thank you very much Mr. Scott for covering sensitive topics the was you do and for showing and reminding the viewers of the history of so many (famous) people, the sad (real time) events (and crimes). Sending kindest regards from a small village in Germany overseas! Your empathy ist truly one of a kind!!! Thank you!!!
I am so happy that you have done a video about Max Wright. He is one actor I didn't think anyone would remember. He was great on ALF. My mom recorded every episodic. My favorite episodes were The Dummy and The Cockroach. That was funny. I try not to focus on the bad stuff and I don't trust what the tabloids says. Great video Scott.
RIP Max Wright! I really liked him on Alf.
Max Wright was also in the sitcom "Norm" with Norm Macdonald. He was a great comedic actor with great timing whether he liked it or not. Sorry to hear the last years of his life were so lousy. RIP.
I had no idea he was a Michigander. Alf was one of my top 5 shows growing up. Honestly so many actors have some sort of scandal. At least he wasn’t hurting anyone but himself
Hi from Corfu-im still awake to watch this one 😁🥰🇬🇷
No matter what someone's story is, you are always respectful to them. We appreciate you! 👍
He's good in my book. Loved Alf as a kid, he did bring me joy with his work. RIP Max Wright
ALF was a hit show and I think it was popular among all ages at the time! RIP Max
Not sure about "all ages"
@@gradetrend8138 Lol 😂 you’re right maybe not all ages but let’s say most liked it or at least watched some episodes! It was hard to avoid as it was very popular
@@gradetrend8138 🤣
@@jayweiss4378 I looked up some episodes on here I can see its appeal
He was a good actor
@@gradetrend8138 I think if you ask people today to name a few tv shows from the 80s this would be one of them! Alf also had the merch which I doubt others did! I couldn’t watch it today ha ha even though I agree it was well done and acted in it’s day! To me it’s like Full House, Different Strokes, Cheers… you didn’t have to watch it but we all knew they had a huge audience!
LOL a former co-worker of mine was obsessed with Alf and the show. [...a grown man....ha ha ha] I can "hear" Max's voice, and Alf's voice just thinking about the show. It was a cute show. Thanks for making this video and the funny memory it brought me. Max just went down the same path of many, many others, especially the 80's and 90's. OX
Hi Scott!! Honestly, Alf annoyed me and I never liked the show but I learned a lot about this kind hearted man. He was a good actor and what one does in their bedroom is their choice. We shall not judge. Gay or straight, we are all in the world together. Excellent upload ❣️😊
🕊️🙏❤️
Beautiful sentiment thank you
I never got the concept of the show and thought it was really dumb unless you were 2yrs old
I loved the show ALF... and in 1987 being diagnosed with lymphoma myself.. I underwent some surgery and woke up from surgery back in my room ..to a large ALF stuffed character toy in my bed with me...brought to me by my husband...and I still have that stuffed toy now.
Well, if it made him happy and it was all between consenting adults then who are we to judge?
Everyone deserves love and to be happy in life 💜 🇬🇷
No, they don’t. There’s lots of evil people in this world. Evil people deserve love?
@@jerseytomato100 So did or do you ever consider the fact that some evil people (obviously not all) are evil because of lack of being loved? You are right to a degree, with truly evil people no amount of love will ever help or change them.
I got Alf for my birthday when the show was popular on TV. I still have my Alf! I buy him clothes, summer, winter, holidays, and take him with me when I go somewhere. I seat belt Alf in the front passenger side in his mini car seat. Sometimes I forget to bring him back to my room and friends laugh when they see Alf sitting in my car.
I lovvvvvvvve my Alf and I would save him if the house was on fire. That's how much he means to me. (If people can like animals as humans, I can love my Alf.) 🐻
I was a huge ALF fan (still am!) I collect vinatage toys and just managed to get a vintage 1986 ALF plushie!! I’d not heard of this about him, so it’s interesting to know, and sad really that he had to hide that part of him self.
Alf was my favorite show at the time and it's still my top favorites. I didn't know about the personal life things. He was a good actor with great presence on screen. Glad he came around to thinking that it wasn't so bad being on the show. I would go to a convention, if i knew Alf actors were there. May he rest in peace and I'm glad he was able to go to the actor's home, to spend his final days.
I am French became Alf fan art 50 years old. I listen Alf only in English.
Love all in this sitcom.
Max right was a Real great actor, i played si well.
Histoire voice❤
Williiii
Txs for your very interesting video
Alf was a weekly staple in our house and I loved that show!!! His history is shocking because I'll always remember him as a good, wholesome father figure. However, we all have demons that we don't want to share and, in a twisted way, it's reassuring that no human is immune to having them.
I always enjoyed Alf as a kid. It was one of my favorites. It was very funny and brought a lot of joy. RIP Max.
I watched ALF from when I was 7-11 years old. All when the episodes came out on Prime Time. You did this segment very respectfully. Thanks Brother.
Alf absolutely is my favorite show of all time. I grew up on it and I've been watching it every day for weeks now. It comforts me.
R.I.P. Max Wright.
Great actor.
He should get all the credit.. without him alf is not as funny ..cause he was the best partner ..just watch the alf project film ..without max what was really the point of it..there was no closure with the tanners 😢
I'm just echoing what others have already said! Scott, I truly respect the amount of research that you do for each of your videos and how respectful you are, especially when handling delicate situations.
Alf is much better than people think, great little details if you watch it carefully. I liked it when I was a kid but love it in another way today.
I think Wright’s Willie was a crucial character because ALF needed a character who was there to keep him anchored in the midst of his constant shenanigans. This show and MacGyver were probably my favorite shows from the 80s.
Ha ha I was a child in the '80s and these were my favorite shows, too. I even liked the ALF cartoons.
I just discovered your videos(3 months)and I find you entertaining and down to earth. You have this platform and you use it wisely. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much man
I'm watching this one now! I wonder how much he felt shame for his orientation, his marriage ending, how his kids felt about all that, and so using drugs helped numb the feelings while he expressed his true desires while dealing with a world that was still very insensitive to who he was. You handled it well man. Thanks again Scott. Zapp really is a fun group to listen to. Their story is a tragic one. If you get to Dayton and/or Hamilton Ohio, there's a story there. Listen to Computer Love and More Bounce to the Ounce! Very fun stuff!
Oh were you talking to me on the live about Zapp? I do know them actually and that’s a very interesting story …stay tuned
This so sad I remember the program. But as always Scott you did this with respect. May he R.I.P. 🙏🙏
Alf is my favorite show right now.
How did I not watch it when I was a kid. R.I.P Mr. Wright
I have to admit I loved that show and I still have my ALF stuffed animal. Sending love from LA.
Very interesting. It is what it is.
You handled everything with respect.
I was really into Alf back in the day. I have heard about actors having all of these same issues so much that the only thing that would be truly shocking is if there was an actor that DIDN'T have these issues.
I still watch ALF and my youngest granddaughter watches it with me...we LOVE IT!!!
Your last "Go for it Willy!" was spot on 😄
Scott, you’re so informative and so respectful. I’m so glad I found your channel. Keep up the great work!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Nothing shocks me anymore.. well done once again and drugs suck !!!
Alf was great sitcom show. It’s one of the types of sitcoms that deserves a cult following. I remember watching Alf and I loved the show. I wish we could get some more of these kind of family oriented sitcoms today.
I normally don't comment on this community, but I actually admire the work and tribute that you make to the deceased. Fist pump to you, Mr. Scott!!!
Huge part of my childhood.loved that show.great vid as always
Scott. Alf was my favourite show of all time. Lol. Hahhahahaah. Alf’s quotes were legitimately. X “What ever you do Willy, don’t check the Chrysler Building in New York!” - “ and while that dust settles” Alf was the best. I remember the scandal. It was shocking at the time. With you reminding me. ( it is still shocking) “not that there’s anything wrong with that”😂
Honestly i wasn't aware that Max Wright had passed away and how, sometimes you just can't keep up with every famous person you've ever known, but he was definitely a part of my younger years through Alf, it was a global success and a whole generation grew up with that show, so i was definitely shocked when i found out the news about his "secret life", it wasn't as wholesome, but no one was more hurt by the things he did than himself and his family. I just hope that they all found peace with what happened and we can keep the more luminous side of Max's life in our memories, may he RIP.
My dad loved it and he was 38 when it came out. And I was 16 when Alf came out
I liked it too
My saturday is complete now!! Another great job Scott!
Good Evening Scott 🙋🏽. Thank you for taking the time to share this with me ‼️. Have a awesome amazing beautiful weekend ‼️😃👍🏽❤️
He was given the nickname "ALF", by Willie Tanner in the pilot episode. ALF was born on October 28, 1756.
Your videos are always very well done and the way you convey empathy through your words is wonderful and you are truly a class act. I lived in the San Fernando Valley as a kid and all the tv shows and movie studios surrounded us and news would travel fast. Max Wright absolutely despised his role on Alf and there was much discord and animosity on the set of that show from the very start. I very much enjoyed Alf, but that's the magic of TV and movies, you can make everything look good. I did not know however, that Max Wright was from Michigan and I actually moved to Michigan last year, so I'll have to head east and say hello in person.
Loved the show Alf in the late 80s and still love that show. Have the series on DVD
As long as he was happy! I grew up watching Alf and I even had the Stuffed Toy at one time lol. To be a kid again 🤣 Thank you for being so inclusive and non judgmental. It actually surprises me how many of us born in the 70s were able to grow up without absorbing the stereotypes/ homophobia that many of us were raised in💜Thank you for all your wonderful Video. Sending Love from Toronto Canada 🇨🇦
Scott, you are so kind. We all get old and look different. Those are desperate vultures taking pictures of Max Wright like that.
Weird timing. I just watched ALF for the first time in years a few days ago! I'm definitely shocked but not judging him. Funny show! I never heard any of this. I used to read the enquirer and star magazine, but didn't believe everything they wrote...Max was a good actor, RIP Max💔 what a nice cemetery. Thanks Scott 💜
I love Alf and always will.
It was so funny!
I don't care about his personal life. Max was a good actor and that's his legacy.
I loved ALF. Your GO FOR IT WILLY actually made me emotional (you sounded JUST like him!)...which in turn embarrassed the crap out of me. 😂😂😂 I loved Max. He was a fantastic actor.
I fell in love with him in the movie All that Jazz. His character is so memorable! One of my favorites. He managed to steal every scene he was in and I still remember his lines. ♥️ Edit to add- I thought his character was about to have a hemorrhagic stroke at any minute. 😅😂
Oh I used to watch Alf. There is a blast from the past.
If only People looked at Life like you do Scott, the World would be such a better place, I think you are such a sweet soul. 😋
Thank you so much Tina
Watched ALF as a kid & remember thinking it was an odd show, but still had an ALF doll for some reason. Honestly, was unaware of what happened to Max Wright. Thought you did a respectful job explaining what is public information without bias. Hope he and his family are at peace.
ALF brought a lot of joy to people. At the time the show was on, I was working at a shelter for neglected and abused kids. I can tell you that many a child enjoyed being curled up with a big bowl of popcorn, having some well deserved laughs because of that show.
I watch Alf every morning.
You are exactly right Scott. Thank you for saying it just the way you did.
ALF is definitely my favourite TV show. I've been very poorly and bought the boxset online to help cheer me up. Made me laugh and help me forget my illness. I then CZcamsd the cast of ALF to see what everyone is doing now and your video was the first one I found. So sad. RIP Max
thank you scott! you are shure getting around....
You know Scott I have to say it again. You created a great story from doing your homework and research. I was not sure if I really wanted to watch this video because I was a fan of the TV show but not of the actor and your storytelling abilities captured me and kept me watching the whole thing. And always say to you thanks for all that you do and thanks for creating a topic on which most people find fascinating and that is death . One of your biggest fans and your favorite mortician lol . Tom in Ohio
I remember my son loving Alf as a child. He never missed an episode. He actually won a big Alf stuffed toy at a toy store drawing. He still has it!!!
Just FYI the music playing at the beginning of the episode was so beautiful, I LOVE melancholy moody music. A HUGE thank you for turning me onto Scott Buckley's music. Another ALF documentary I watched today had a commenter mention how G-rated they went with Max Wright. So I googled Max Wright and here I am. Thanks for your video, it was fantastic.
My brother & I loved that show, thanks Scott 😊
I'm glad you mentioned it. There's nothing in wikipedia and I didn't even know. As you said, I hope he was happy. Well done video.
His story reminds me of the South Park episode with Butters dad where he has a secret life
A friend's husband after 25 years of married life and 3 daughters came out as gay. My friend was devastated, horrified and to this day several years later still hates him. I understand how she would feel this way after having been betrayed.
I also feel sorry for these guys that they can not enjoy the life they chose. HOWEVER, for the wife, the children this is extremely painful experience and leaves long lasting fears of betrayal, abandonment. My friend's children still see, love and interact with their dad for which I commend them and him. Although, my friend remarried her new husband also hates gay people which is a sick bonding for them
I am old enough to remember Alf.
I did not know that Max passed away.
I do remember hearing he hated working on that show.
The other stuff in the National Enquiree, I never heard about either. But it isn't a publication that I would buy.
RIP Max.
Just found your channel and I'm hooked going back and watching all of these. You do such a good job showing respect to all of these people. Kudos to you, good sir!
You’re always so respectful of your subjects. Thank you for that. I always learn something new about the people you honour as well, and this video was no exception.
Scott you did a great job telling Max's Story . I loved him in Alf. The enquirer is a horrible scandal paper they probably paid someone real nice for that story.
Actually those who buy the Enquirer pay the fees
Or lied about the whole story. With those trash mags you never know.
@@stephanieann622 Those are my thoughts as well you never know with these rags.
You did hear the part where he said there’s a video that surfaced around the 90’s? People often make the mistake of holding strangers to a high esteem just because they are/were famous. I, too, am guilty of that.
Yes. Except there are photos from the video. No question it's him in them.
Best Christmas gift I ever got was a talking Alf. Unfortunately, it got put in the attic and when we pulled it down later the hands and plastic pieces had melted. Breaks my heart. I started re-watching the show the other day and it's still awesome. I did read that the dude that created it and voiced Alf, as the week went building up to a show slowly all the jokes just got transferred to Alf and the people just ended up being there. It's still damn good, as most of those 80s-90s shows are. Like Charles in Charge, still very funny today.
What a sad story about Max! I never watched Elf,but I know it’s hard for you to tell some things that people go through! You have a kind way to tell the stories of others! Alway appreciate you taking us along with you on these videos! Always love listening and traveling with you 😌
Great video! Poor , Max. Wish things were better for him. Also, Alf really is my favorite show of all time so we definitely do exist.
I watched Alf faithfully I love that show. Alf will forever be my favorite 80's tv show. Rest In Peace, Max. Thank you for your video on Max, Scott.
I grew up watching Alf. I loved it
