On German Submarines, the so called "UZO" or "U-Boot-Zieloptik" translated to "Submarine Targeting Optics" Displayed the bearing relatively to the Submarine. So 0° was the bow of the Submarine, 180° aft and so on. You get the idea. So that's correct.
Oh thanks, didn't know this
not only on subs, basically all the rotable optics germans used during ww2 had measured (weather the dial was visible through or not) angle from starting position
Regarding the bearings you commented on earlier:
The target ship's bearing of 07 is the compass bearing (due north for all intents and purposes) of its direction of travel.
The periscope info is a little confusing yes, but that gives you relative bearing based on the orientation of your ship. While the game doesn't seem to really do much with it, it it would be important for a full TDC solution if you were to manually compute it. A bearing of 0 is "dead ahead" of your line of travel. 90 would be to starboard, 270 directly port, etc, etc.
Just so you know, you actually can get back to the bigger map, by pressing the the icon on the top left corner, that is next to the X icon on the "Battle map view". You can get back to the patrol map!
Hope this helps!
I think this is based off Silent Service 1 and 2, maybe a bit too much. I don't mind the arcadiness of not plotting torps, but the bugs, low res and everything else puts me off. I'd rather it was based off the Silent Hunter series, which still had the automatic plotting but was much more realistic. Silent Hunter 3 and 4 also had far superior graphics, especially the sea, and they were 15 and 20 years old years old.
Guys, PLEASE, re-watch the silent service 1 and 2. You'll see how wrong you are. It's a silent hunter 1 clone.
@@Ellerion2 it lacks a lot of the features in any of those named titles incuding both Silent Sevice and Silent Hunter. but its eary access so with feedback and input & time hopefully...
Looks like something straight out of 1997.
This is VERY clearly something more an Alpha build than any sort of Early access. It isn't fully fleshed out, they are still building the game itself, it isn't fine tuning or anything like that. It's pre beta.
From what i can tell, it looks like an extended version of silent depth game i played on my phone; so it might be why it's called silent depth 2...
The visual look reminds me of silent hunter 1 game (back then they didn't use the number 1 yet as they didn't have more than one game with this name).
0:08 Alright, you made me lol, literally.
pushed the like button but i don't like the game, it feels like a mobile game
That's because it is
It's almost exactly like Silent Service II
Actually silent service 2 was an even older game than silent hunter. That was a dos only game and sound effects were as basic as something played on commodore 64
@@Ellerion2 Silent Service II was also on the Amiga
Its a shame that the best sub simulator for Uboats is still Atlantic Fleet cause you control the entire outcome of the war or any campaign like silent hunter 3 or 5
so not a submarine simulator at all then? since that wasn't really the function of a U-Boat Kaptein
That sighting scope on the bridge there is supposed to give relative bearing's on the tape across the top. Knowing where a target is relative to your own ship is much more useful than knowing the compass heading to it, generally speaking. Lets say I have a target directly North of my boat. Well, if I'm sailing directly North, that means the relative bearing is zero, the hostile vessel is directly in front of me, and I potentially have a torpedo shot at them. Now spin my boat 90 degrees and say I'm heading East, well, the enemy ship is still to my North, but now I don't have a torpedo shot. Spin my boat another 90 and head it south, well know I might have a shot with the stern torps, but the bit of my ship that makes all the noise to their sonar quite nicely.
It's just generally quicker and easier to understand where the hostile is given as a relative bearing, it also means you don't to know the heading of your own ship. I can literally grab anyone, tell them the enemy is at 090, and they know to look straight starboard. Same reason pilots use the O'clock system, (i.e. banding at 3 O'clock), because it's a quick reference to direct everyone's attention to the right place.
I feel like having a arcade sub game is almost a oxymoron the whole point of submarine warfare(and warfare as a whole) is how scary and asymmetric it is. Having it be not scary or tense is like having a fighting game without combos a strategy game without timing or a fps without precision.
This is basically a remake of a Commodore 64 game that I loved back in the 1980s. I couldn't be happier to see this remarketed. The immersion comes from the time it takes to set up an attack. It's not a full sim with running around the ship, etc. Just the elements needed for a little fun.
Looks like Silent Service 2 which i played on Amiga in 1990s
The water trails on the glass and the waves look weird. The ships don't sit in the water in a natural way. In this day and age, a half-arsed attempt at realism looks like laziness rather than a 'design' decision.
targetting is similar to Silent Service / Task Force 1942 but without the solution 'timer' that those games that should be added, ie the user had to keep their view locked on the target for a certain amount of time while the crew worked out the solution.
Yep, squares represent civilian ships and diamonds represent warships.
By the way, does damage in THIS game also end up being permanent, if flooding happens? On mobile version i could not repair flooded compartments.
This feels and looks like a mobile game. UBoat and every last one of the Silent Hunter games are much better IMHO, great content Stealth. Keep it up
It immediatley reminded me of silent depth from android and silent hunter (the pre-silent hunter 2 one). The dialogs were taken fro silent service series where the crew of one of the submarines said "the escort has started the run" and other phrases from the episodes.
@@Ellerion2 Don't forgot the "secure the battlestation" were changed into just "battlestation" when you using deck gun.
4:56 that might be total rounds carried like the torpedoes.
Stealth17 not understanding relative bearing is amazing 🤣🤣🤣
No I understand it, I was just expecting a compass vision in the periscope, not bearing.
@@Stealth17Gamingif it's a marking on a periscope, why would it have the compass bearing, rather than be zeroed so that the front of the submarine is always zero?
I agree that nowadays makes more sense, as you can launch things that are GPS guided, and don't want to put in bad co-ordinates, but in a time where at most you had acoustic guidance and maybe some wire guidance, relative bearing was far more useful for combat, whereas compass bearings were for navigation.
@@kiritotheabridgedgod4178 Fair point. Guess I just misunderstood. What irked me was the original comment. I hate it when people (seem to) point and laugh because somebody (me) doesn't understand something. Brings back a nasty past of bullying for me.
@@Stealth17Gaming understandable.
@@Stealth17Gaming Mmm... Yes... 😏
Thanks for being blond honest. I stop getting Early access games, and sure think they should hold back untill it is finished....
relative bearings are the correct way of doing things in the binoculars its read from the pelorus in the real world which is fixed, 99 is, I think, the total shells you can have 96 is what you have left,
This just looks like a better version of silent depth 1 which is a mobile game
Yes correct but look at the EA roadmap which should move it quite a bit beyond that level.
When I saw the preview originally I thought it looked more like a mobile game, unfortunately that opinion hasn't changed. I think I'll just stick with my modded version of Silent Hunter 4 and U-boat. As well as Cold Waters with DOT for modern sub stuff.
This feels a .. lost? The trouble is by their very nature sub sims tend to attract people who dont mind getting really stuck into maths problems etc (i enjoy them), but if you remove that element to make it more fun for the average player you need to add something back, which it seems this doesn't? Sub games don't really lend themselves to action and excitement.
Submarine game - Cool!
Arcade title - That's fine, Cold Waters wasn't exactly the height of simulation and its great.
WW2 - Eh ~ Fiiiineee.... just so many out there from this era.
Ugly HUD - not great.
Mobile port-like clunkiness - Yeah... not for me.
too bad, I was hoping for updated SH1. it's just a mobile/arcade game, not a sim.
ok I am curious, can you use F2 and Shift with the arrow keys like Silent hunter 4 to move around the control room? Yes I know its a different game, however not just one dev can use the same type of control.
You absolutely addressed everything I find problematic with the game! I got a refund after just 24 minutes playtime.
your not wrong about it looking worse then battle stations pacific that game still looks really good now.
For a second I thought this was a new Silent Hunter game and got super disappointed BUT This is kinda cool as a more slightly-above-casual sub game. I'd like to see more indie made sim games to fill in the void of the sorta-empty vehicle-mil-sim genre, ESPECIALLY FLIGHT SIMS. I love Ace Combat to death but it ain't a sim, and DCS is FAR FAR FAR FAR too complicated for me. Something like an modern slightly-advanced Corncob 3D would be awesome! Maybe if I can increase my dev chops I can make something like that.
A odd idea for a spin on the naval-sim style game: one that mixes the solo vehicle ship combat (like SH or this rather than Dreadnoughts) but with Dreadnought's free-form campaign but from the perspective of a 20th century U-Boat 1600's-style privateer, (which would require some alt-history shenanigans.) Would something like that be interesting?
Far worse screens and resolutions in BS:Midway/Pacific? Not me, I ran them on 21" Siemens CRTs on 1600x1200 back in the days :D
like ur comments ... also i agree on navigating around ... needs some work
However under £10 on steam I guess sets expectations not to expect too much. However after watching this video I don't think I'll bother for moment
Passing on this till they fixs loads of issues probably in 2030.....
its only just launched and its in Early access, its inexpensive I refunded but have now repurchased, feedack, user input and the roadmap will make things a lot better.
Silent hunter and U-boat is MUCH MUCH better
Like to see an updated version of the original Silent Hunter. This is a sloppy mess with poor quality control. LOL
i’ve been very disappointed with the MicroProse releases lately
I agree, game isn't ripe yet, and probably should not have been early accessed.
This game be not for me. Dream sub game for me was Silent Hunter 3, SH4 had awful water animation (flying sub in bad weather). And the scope bearing is in reference to the bow at 000, as in Silent Hunter 3 and 4. So 000 is straight ahead, 090 to starboard, 180 sternwards, 270 to port.
Is there a vr mode
I bought it, but prefer silent hunter so far
Was looking forward to the game but unfortunately it's not worth buying maybe in a year
Nah
No excuse for a modern game to look worse than one that is nearly 2 decades older.
It looks like a ripped off versionish of Silent Hunter but for a Mobile or Tablet!
The original SD was a mobile game this is basically the same thing but with better graphics but the EA roadmap points to some nice additions which should make it better,
looks horrible compared to U boat.
0:20 MORE arcady than U-Boat? Holy ... sry, but I'm not going to waste the next 20min of my life. Cu another time ...
Putting the name of an ocean in your game just makes it destined to fail. Swear every game I see with Atlantic or Pacific in it is just bad. Only good game I can think of with an ocean in its title is Atlantic Fleet lol
Battlesations Pacific?
1991 i play Silent Service 1, that was more fun than this kind of Rubbish. This Game is a Joke, wie have 2024 and you get better Games for your Mobile. Excuse my bad english, i am a 54 Years old German an my school english is more than 30 years old ^^
horrible game
