On "My Car Story" we're in Rosemont IL on 3-4-20 at the World of Wheels car show.
We're looking at a 1970 Plymouth Superbird in Limelight Green Paint. The car is equipped with a 426 CI Hemi V8 engine.
The car's Owner is Janice Sutherland. Janice’s had this car since new. Janice shares she read in the paper that this car did 200 MPH and she had to have one.

My father owned 3 of these over the years of my youth. A blue, a red and one in this green and all trophy winners in the super bird club. We traveled to a lot of events when I was younger all over the country. Sadly all 3 had 440 6 packs and not hemi. Boy do I wish we still had one of them the last one a green one I remember my dad selling in mid 80s for 10 or 15 grand boy is that sad to think about now. Still believe we have a lot of spare stickers, and parts though in storage. My father promised me the green one as my first car but sadly sold it before, but since we were Mopar fans I did end up with a mint 74 Charger SE so not all bad.
Original lady owner of a legendary Mopar....that's not something you get to see everyday...and Janice you bought it for the right reason :) Great story Lou

She looks like she was barely 16 in 1970. I'm trying to imagine how she talked her dad into it. "Yea dad its got a nice tall wing, so easy to see, much less likely to be hit by a distracted driver."
Maybe her Dad is Richard Petty :-)
She convinced her dad to buy it for her by saying, "Dad, I have to outrun all of those Wile E. Coyote men."

It's a mopar, you always have a handful of ballast resisters in the glovebox.

So true Mike!! They are ceramic and crack easily. My 71 Demon was like that.
My dad bought a new 77 Macho Edition Ramcharger. The resistors always went out in the middle of nowhere. He kept a couple in the glovebox. Sure enouugh , we got home! My uncle bought a new 70 Lemon Twist 383 pistol grip Roadrunner . i was 5 years old and thought it was the coolest thing known to man . Got in trouble constantly for drawing pictures of it instead of paying attention in class. I wept when he totalled it in a traffic accident . Yes , I grew up Mopar. My first car was a 74 Charger SE. Had the N50 I5s on Cragars with G78 15s on front .Gramps had a 73 Chrysler Newport with 440 . It was a serious land yacht. Ah the days of my youth....
I do with mine. 70 383 Road Runner. Have the bill of sale and mine has over 110k original miles. Florida car it's whole life. AND, NAVY owners the hole time. I even have the ledger from the second owner where he documented every time he did anything to the car, including miles when the maintenance was done.

Amazing, Lou! Janice is right; the black vinyl roof really stands out, which definitely has some competition from the wonderful paint, the wing, and of course, the Hemi! It's no wonder she kept it and drove it since day one. Good for her!

Lady you are just too cool..wow. I saw one up close at a 7-11 while going to buy a comic book in Virginia..I looked around and touched the rear wing real quick.. never have I forgotten that moment..it was around circa 1975 and I'm 54 now.

Someone on my block had a Superbird when I was a kid and no one thought it was funny. He raced the car and did burnouts in the street and he destroyed it in about 2 months. I'm so glad this nice lady preserved hers.

Dear Lou owened a 1972 Dodge Polaria State Police Interceptor with the 400 Cube Motor. We kept shorting out Starters until a part guy at NAPA said it was the ballist register he installed a new one for $1.50 never had a problem after that! That 400 ran hot with the big 4-barrel thermoquad Carb!

@@wildestcowboy2668 I would put some sick seats from a Fiero with the speakers in the headrest and burn the bench so no one could ever put it back in a car... bench seats are too slippery and dangerous if you ever took a corner and ended up driving from the passenger seat.

This car is remarkable , not only because of its color, engine, and options, but it's a one owner. I was surprised when she said it had every option available that it didn't have power windows. I'm pretty sure they were available on the Charger Daytona.

A neighbor had a blue one that he only drove once in a while. Even back then he knew it would be worth money. He had purchased upon returning home from Vietnam. His was a manual transmission and for years I thought these car only came with manual.

In 1975 my mom took me to HARA arena in Dayton Ohio for the Carl Casper car show. I was 7.
For the first 3 years there were always 3 or 5 Superbirds in the main arena as you entered the show.

I had a 69 Roadrunner with a 383. I gassed it too hard one day on a slick road going about 60 and she swung back around when I over corrected. Can't imagine what the hemi would have been like. Great job keeping that car so pristine.

Watching this on lock-down in Florida, while Covid-19 cruises around my area. My all-time favorite car, but I’ll take mine in “Petty Blue”! This car must literally be priceless. HEMI Superbirds go for crazy money in 2020, IF you can get your hands on one!

My sister-in-law and her husband had two of these. A green one and an orange one. They sold them about 73-74 when they divorced.

Janice is right... There was one in my town back in ‘79 in well used condition.
My 8th grade friends laughed at it, and didn’t believe it was a factory car.
I had to show them the Motor Trend ad with Richard Petty from 1970!

Wow unbelievable she was laughed at back in the day but look who has the last laugh now. She kept it in good condition before the 3 restorations. I love the fact she kept it original and was a daily driver. She has all the options on it. That itself is a rarity. Really looks good for a 50 year old car. In '70 my neighbor bought a new one. It was white and had a 440. You could hear that car rumbling all the way up and down the street when he came and went. He'd do a burnout once in awhile when he saw us kids watching. I was 13 and never thought any car could have been any cooler than that one. My parents forbade me from riding in it. :( Great times. :)

Roadrunners/Superbirds were typically stripped down muscle cars. You're much more likely to find power windows in a more upscale GTX

The ballast resistor. I have had to replace them over the years. An affordable part to purchase, but a pain when it won't start.
We used to keep a spare in the glove compartment.

My Superbird encounter: ‘77 I’m picking up a new ‘76 Chevy LUV and a dude was trading in a purple Bird. It was super hammered inside and out. I remember asking about it instead of the LUV. The salesman was my gf’s dad and he told me there was no going back on the PU since they had to dealer swap for it and put ac in it.

I was only 5 years old then but I remember one this color on a dealer lot in Muskegon Michigan....tried so hard to get my dad to buy it. No dice. He went for the Monaco wagon with the 383 and woodgrain paneling. Ugh! That superbird sat on the lot for over a year....wonder what happened to it. Very cool car here.

Her car has a build date of 12/69. and she purchased it in May of 1970. It sat on the lot or in the showroom for a few months. The price or the looks of the car scared people away. All Superbirds had vinyl tops, so what make code V19 special?
