- Matt takes a spirited drive through the canyons in the 2014 Porsche 991 Carrera S. Before spending a week with this car, Matt wouldn't have given a Carrera a second thought. Will 1,000 miles behind the wheel change his mind?

There is nothing like driving a 911, they are worth every single penny. Once you own one, you will never look at another car.
true that, drove my dad's 997 carrera s and then i drove r8 v10 and I hated it compared to the porsche.
I drove the 987.2 Cayman after a 911 and preferred it! But I would gladly add a 911 to the lineup if I could .. No doubt, also with a manual gearbox.
@@MagicAyrtonforever my favourite would be the ferrari california. After driving one i cant stop thinking about the day ill buy one for myself. Pure joy...
It is sad that people get so caught up in the facts and figures on paper. Just because a car can go 0.4 seconds faster from zero to sixty, doesn't mean it's going to be more fun. And to me, that's why we drive cars - because they are fun!
Matt, because of your review, I went out and bought one. So far, I don't regret a single penny I spent on the car. Completely satisfying driving experience!
Do you still have it? What was your ownership like?
@@Ferraridude13 The only thing with driving it was that the car is very tight and hard to get it loose for fun. I enjoyed AMG GTS more but the ownership cannot be complained, especially with the resale value.
Its not about horsepower or top speed. Its about pedigree, engineering, and class.
ROFLcopter You mean pedigree as a dog food? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pedigree_Petfoods
This comment is fantastically intelligent. Don't mind the guy above me. Childish & pathetic.
I concur, the negative comment was from a jealous person who probably cant afford a porsche
ROFLcopter : the 911 covers all those aspects...
@@hertzair1186 of course
Yet again Matt Farah is one of the very few American journalists to "get it". It's nice to keep seeing reviews that aren't just the usual regurgitating the press pack. It's also nice that the guy infront of the camera can actually appreciate a quality item for what it is rather than just saying it's not as fast as a Corvette and slower, therefore worse. To say those reviews are missing the point would be a huge understatement.
"I've never really been a 911 guy" Fast forward 4 years and he owns an aircooled 911 lol
imo, the 911 is the best car ever
Does anyone else appreciate how Matt actually replies to messages left on his videos? I think it's really cool how we can host an open dialogue and ask him questions regarding cars most of us will never drive.
Man I need to drive a 991. Another great video as usual guys!
omg its u .. that's cool im also subbed to u :)
Have your fans buy you one man #indiegogo
One day I will have one of these beauties
Just bought this exact car. Same color, same year....living the Dream !!
I can't agree more . I just bought a used 2014 991. I have owned Porsches for nearly 50 years. Best car so far a joy to drive !
hows the reliability. thinking of buying one
I thought a long time about writing this comment we have a 2015 991.1 Carrera 4S and it is one of the best sounding and driving cars i have ever experienced if you buy a 911 you will fall in love for life with it
Sick footage and video. . .once again. I really like the point on the luxury aspect and pricing. I recently drove a brand new seized Continental GT(seized for no insurance) for like 2 miles, and despite it being filled with alot of VW/Audi stuff, the interior and quality feel was incredible. Got back in the 5 series and it felt like a particularly crappy old Kia in comparison.
Job well done, Matt! I've been really enjoying your videos as of late, on here and on Drive. As a Porsche fan I can't wait till you get your hands on the Porsche GT3
Not sure if anyone else is getting these older Episodes of TST in their feed but this is awesome!
Don't ever compare vette or mustang with this beauty. It's totally a different style car. The one who cares about numbers on paper does not know the beauty of engineering and build quality. If you really care about numbers, go buy a GTR.
REN 627 And what is wrong with gtr? Porsche lost its class when te boxter came along...
DuBstep115
GTR lost its class when they versa... march... lol, if you want to compare it like that
DuBstep115 Porsche lost it's class when the Boxster came along?? How uninformed and so yesterday are your comments. Wake up and shake off your preconceived notions developed in the past with respect to the Boxster; all of the car reviewers have. It is said to be one of the best cars on the road.
C Straley How does the car being god handling have to do anything with the "class"
Do you think everyone adores the Boxster S only because it handles good? That is the old Boxster like I said; go look at and drive a new one.
btw I think the GTR is a great car.
This is your guys' best, most professional video to date. I really think you are hitting your stride. Looking forward to what else is coming.
Always enjoy your videos Matt. Your thoughts are always enlightening.
Well said. I had a GT3 and it was the subjective points that made it so amazing. The feel, sound, and the way it all just worked together tis what made it so good. The numbers on paper are irrelevant on public roads. You will not feel a .2 second difference in accelration. You will feel how the car works. The only reason I sold it was the only way to really get the best of it was on a track, and once you do that, you realize cars like this just are not as much fun on everyday roads because they are so capable. Not driving them hard is beating on them and driving them to go to dinner is just boring.
Excellent video! One comment I have: The best value prop for a 911 is one that is 3 years old. Look at the depreciation curve: 30% drop after 3 years and the curve flattens out considerably after that. I bought my 2014 911 CS in 2017 with 4700 miles for $82k and the sticker new was $124K.
I liked the 996 because of those front headlights. I know the Boxster had them too but.. it was beautiful at the time.
Hi Matt, Again a great vid. Pulled the trigger on my new 991 order. Can't wait for delivery for my "150-thousand dollar worth of fine Germany automobile"!
THE SMOKING TIRE IS DOPE!!! I like when u guys test normal cars too
great vid as always...great car
Great job Matt nice tunes at the end.
I’m presently looking into a 991.1. It’s not only about horsepower. Thanks for the excellent video.
we need a 991 gt3 next!
Great job guys, liked the video scenes and the narration. If I was in the market I think I could actually make a purchasing decision based on this video
Mmmmmm...that exhaust sound... :)
I've seen a family of four jump out of a 911, bodyboards and all, down at the beach. It was like watching a clown car but impressive nonetheless.
+Jue_boy Haha. That's fucking awesome!
+Jue_boy well kids are the only ones who will fit in the back seat
Well put matt! Great review
Matt Farah is one of the best car journalist of all time! And absolutely relevant to this generation.
Off topic but I was pleasantly suprised to hear Godspeed! You Black Emporor as the intro music!
so ready to get my boxster running again haha, litterly sheered bolts in half on the cv joint connecting to the half axle on the left side haha... parts ordered and comming in next week!
Good job Matt, as always :D
I like the luxury bag comparison, puts things into perspective for people purely looking at numbers
Nice show, Matt. I like your style.
Another great episode
I could watch this Guys reviews all day. He tells it like it is.
How did you like the seats? I am a big guy and couldn't stand my seats (adaptive sport seats), so I sold it. The seat was pushing against my shoulder blades and I was constantly twitching.
Great review Matt. 🤘
wow a really good review! Says some more than other reviews, not just number crushing. The Corvette, Mustang and F-Type are great and better value, but I really liked how you were able to point out what a Porsche does above them. Thumbs up
a $144k loaded carrera s? might as well get a base GT3 then (:
And thus is the evil of the 911 lineup
It's las about the options people.
is this the same car you test drove for drive and CH did a video with v. c7?
it sure looks the same, color ext and int as well as rims / brakes. btw is the 7 speed manual a bad purchase or will it still be very satisfying to drive?
Nice review!
Damn good video!
I like this dude production quality
Nice car! Nice watch!
My god is this a troll-free CZcams thread? Congrats for this Matt! Great review
MrKeyboardCommando Say 95% free, it's pretty good still. Considering. Plus, Matt actually answers some, that counts double!
My thoughts precisely ;-)
Great review ;) If you don't need a backseat, look at the 981, or if you want the 3.8l engine, a Ruf 3800 or a BGB conversion...
Love the yellow!!
Matt is back at it 🙌
TheSmokingTire ....I can tell you where to put your cell phone Matt!!! Hahhhaa another great review!!!
*COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!*
Agree!! Thanks.
Having owned a 1987 944 S Porsche that I drove for about 10 years, I can say that it was worth it to me for every dime paid. That car literally put a smile on my face every time I drove it, to work and back every day and on weekend driving trips. As others have mentioned, it's the total driving experience - not just 0 to 60 times or max speed in a corner. A neighbor of mine had a Vette that I drove on a couple of occasions, an interesting car but not one that I would substitute for my Porsche. I'm looking at getting a 2012 Carrera S sometime next year and having fun on the canyon and mountain roads here in southern and central California.
whats the best porsche turbo you can get
Just got a 14 C2S Coupe. It’s AMAZING! Last of the analog Porsche.
Well said Matt...I completely agree
This is the 991 to get for me, but only the manual version because the GT3 doesn't come with a stick.
Another swell video. I do wish you were crazy enough to do drifts in that $144k yellow bubble. But I totally respect your wisdom.
Drifting on the street is incredibly irresponsible, and a terrible example to set. When I had this same car at the track, a safe environment, I did do a few slides: 2014 Porsche 911 Carrera S Review - TEST/DRIVE
A very interesting point is brought up, value. 911's perhaps before the 991 generation have always struck me as a good value, very usable package but in compromised driving characteristics, good reliability (or so I'm told) and remarkable residuals. But for a 80-90k for a base Carrera 350 HP does seem slightly, let's say steep. Power certainly doesn't equate to over all superiority as Matt explains but 350 hp for hundered grand doesn't seem quite right.
Wow, production values are getting as good as the big boys. Now the show just needs a real host with a real watch.
Hey Matt.... So you think this is better than the older corvettes, perhaps it is in your book. How about vs the new Corvette Z06? Still think it will be more satisfying?
Matt is back it 🙌
I don't mean to be that guy but..... if this is a 150-160k Carrera can't a turbo be had for that price?
The yellow brake calipers and carbon brakes are $10K and that sport exhaust is $3K. Lots of extras on that car!
TeamEpsilonRacing turbo a 190k not 150 yahoo
mikey bojangles if you put all this stuff on a Targa model I think you be neck and neck with a no option Turbo
Just realized what the theme song is. Good taste!
Great review, and great channel Matt. At the end of the day, this 911 is still twice the price of the '14 Vette and in 4 years you will be able to pick one up for $70-$80K. Let's not forget how great the new Vette is and how much you raved about it in your review. My problem with the 911 is exactly what you said about it in your F-Type review, it's essentially the same car year after year in terms of design. At least the F-Type & Vette have eye-catching new designs, IMO.
I love the C7 Vette. It's worth every bit of what they are charging at $65k. Thing is, the 911 is worth every bit of what they are charging at (realistically) $120k also.
This idea of an automatic seems kinda nice, PDK. Its a light car too, my 1996 Audi A4 is like 4300 pounds, practically a light pickup truck
How do you fit in this car?
Porsche has been my favorite mark since I was a boy. I still lust for one. The god awful yellow seatbelts and interior pieces would have to go. Replace them with black belts and alacantara inserts.
Can't wait for tuned to start again ;)
hey matt ust wondering you probably get asked this a lot but will you be attending the bullrun2014 this year? I miss the videos from those? or maybe gumball?
no. I'm over that stupid street racing shit. It's ridiculous and dangerous. I'm working with Rally North America, which focuses more on travel and road tripping, and the films will be much more interesting.
TheSmokingTire
I know i wouldn't want all those tickets on my license...
TheSmokingTire How very responsible of you Matt! And that is not laced with sarcasm!
TheSmokingTire
is that all the bullrun is? just people going ridiculously over the speed limit and not caring about being caught?
Shawn T. Helfrich that's been my understanding of it.
yellowness inside is slightly nasty
Well the outside looks good, but the yellow door trim and seat belts don't feel like $100000.
Alfred Munkenbeck Don't worry, it's a lot cheaper to NOT have the yellow door trim and seat belts
Why the 911 have back seats?
I really love your reviews, but that 24fps here stuttered across the screen quite annoyingly... (most visible on pans).
so why are most channels so obsessed by that cinema look when it's so jumpy?
Well said.
Matt,
I can tell this car had the Porsche Sports Exhaust, did you like it? I am in the process of deciding whether or not to go with an aftermarket exhaust, or the PSE. Any drone? Did you find the popping on decel enjoyable?
The Porsche Sport Exhaust is the only option on the 911 that I would consider absolutely mandatory. I would rather have that than an aftermarket exhaust, because you can guarantee it will be drone free and be covered under warranty. Love the pops.
Awesome, thanks for the advice! My dealer told me they're able to retrofit the PSE system, and I found that its cost is comparable to some aftermarket systems. The main benefit of going aftermarket is the claimed horsepower, but any small gains would be outweighed by the risk of voiding a warranty.
He says the carrera s is 350 bhp. Its actually 400bhp so not sure where he got that figure from unless the US version is detuned ??
Godspeed you black emperor!!! nice
Ohhh it´s the same 911 Chris Used yesterday on drive against the new Corvette...
haha i noticed that too
That over run crackle
You talked about that "sandbaggy as hell 4 second 0-60," is that the same deal in the Cayman? I've kinda been looking at them even though they're pretty much at the VERY top of my price range, but if I could find a deal on a used one I think it would be pretty sweet to own one of those compared to the other cars I'm looking at!
I don't know, I was basing that statement based on Porsche's quoted numbers compared to what magazine tests are getting. You'd have to do a little research and see if that applies to the Cayman too.
Hey Matt, does the yellow accented interior and yellow seat belts "work" with the look of the car, or does it look out of place when you're actually sitting in it?
It does work, but it's a bit much. I would pass on the dash and go with standard aluminum or CF trim. I do like the yellow belts though.
Yeah, the yellow belts are a really neat feature, but like you said the rest of it seems like a bad idea.
Don't know where to put your cellphone? There is some space for that under the bonnet. That's where it's supposed to be when you drive that thing ;)
beauty😍😍
My father currently leases a 991 Carrera S in solid black as his weekend car. The only add ons he got were the PDK, Sport chrono package, and the upgraded stereo. Off the floor that car would've cost him about 110,000. Is it a bargain to own one of these? Not by any stretch of the imagination. But they're quality cars and frankly, having driven my father's 911, I wouldn't mind doing the lease if its just a weekend car.
Should have got the sports exhaust haha it sounds so amazing with it, PDK is great but manual is better
I would love to have one of these just cuz you can still opt for a 7 speed manual transmission. The podcast did state that it was a horrible gearbox and Porsche didn't put much effort into making it shift nicer. That is very sad and I guess its safe to say that for a prospective buyer like me, the 997 gen is the one to hold out for and buy used over any new 911. I'm sure the Cayman and Boxster line-up of Porsche is still true to its heritage and driver focused precision. Wallets make decisions.
Nice, would still go for a GT3 though (while I'm dreaming)
You can't compare a Porsche to mustang or corvette. its like comparing a Tag to AP.
i have a (911) 991 Carrera 4 and no cars come close to this beauty every time i Drive it i understand why i paid 135K for it. i drove Corvettes and Shelby. but they don't give you the Feel that Porsche gives you. its latterly a Race car and a history to go with it. trust me if you have the money Buy the car is that good. hey matt i love your Sub LV.
Nice.....
Latvietis ?
It is not literally a race car. I don't think you know what "literally" means.
What's "latterly"?
nphung01 "literally" would be the most likely word given the spelling and context
For someone who isn't specifically tracking their car, wouldn't the Panamera always be the better choice? At a similar price point for the turbo, similar refinement, similar attention to detail, and a usable back seat, is there really any reason to not buy the Panamera outside of buying the car for track use?
It's a much bigger, much heavier car. It's not a sports car.
I liked how the sun was bugging my eyes, nice video....(not being sarcastic)
991.1 Carrera s PDK or 2018 Carrera T PDK ?
The early model year 997 911 carrera's are coming down to 35-40k price range for a good example. What would be a good choice? The base carrera or the e92 M3? I don't really care about 0-60 or 1/4 mile times. I just want a car that feels like its wired to my brain when I drive it.
I recently picked up a 39k mile 2007 Carrera in that price range you mentioned with some decent options. I test drove a few M3's and compared to the 997, I can tell you to forget about the M3.
video seems choppy to me? great review though Matt
Heh his rolex already costs 10 times my car :D
from all the reviews and the way journalists rave about the 911, seems lke the 911 is the best sport car on the market, period.
There is no better road car than a Porsche 911. Maybe for some the design isn't beautiful, but it's the best car in terms of aerdodynamics, speed and agility!
It's the only car that matters to me if or when I get rid of my Mercedes I might get a Cayman or another AMG. The 911 is my favorite car on earth in a bunch of different configurations.
