Spellbinding and diverse, Metheny's music transcends geographical and cultural barriers inspiring listeners across the planet. The Meth and his band rock!
I completely agree with Maurice Green's comment: "I'm still waiting for the movie to be made from this cd. The whole cd is arranged is such a way that really does tell a story of love found and love lost." So very, very true.
No doubt about the majestic composition and performance of this masterpiece. For years - begore seeing the video, I always envisioned a small group of young Cambodian girls singing the hauntingly beautiful "verses". RIP Mark.
Loved your vision of Cambodian girls. Have thought the same. This is one of my favorite cds Love them all some more than others. Pretty much the same way I felt about the middle schoolers I tried to introduce art to for 20 years.
Pat, you can make a grown man cry. Thanks for the memories. Thanks for setting the mood in new mexico, calif. and now back in Texas. you have provided a soundtrack to my life and i am deeply in debt to you and yours. Buenos caminos, mi amigo estimado.
I love the album version, but this version took my breath away! This is my favourite track of Metheny's Thank you for posting I would of loved to have been at this concert!
This whole record was my running soundtrack. That summer of '92 logged so many miles. this song takes me back instantly. so odd how just hearing this, my BODY remembers now what it felt like back then...and man, it's GOOD.Guess the runner's high was real... Pat Forever.
One of the best memories of an evening with friends was a dinner party where the host played Metheny. I asked who was playing because I did not know Pat's music twenty years ago. The evening was good because of the company - you know, tears streaming over your face from laughter - but come to think of it, Pat was there too. How special. Thanks Paul in Johannesburg, I hope you're still around to love the sound.
I've loved Pat..PMG since i was 10 yrs old.. I'm now 44...man i guess i had damm good taste as a youngster. Saw the Secret Story tour twice in 92...and i think i left my body during the show.
agree ron - i saw this live on that tour and i wasn't sure how they would reproduce this on stage and they exceeded my wildest expectations - my hairs stood on end for the whole gig!
Absolutely and having seen him live a few times I can tell you this is usually the case. Even in the quartet setting which he's stuck to in recent years he is phenomenal
When they opened with this concert in Kansas City in 1992, Pat walked up one of the aisles of the theater (playing with a wireless pickup) to join the group.
The best concert I ever attended was way back at The Hammersmith Odeon in London and Pat Metheny was the artist. November 1987. He had just brought out 'Still LIfe Talking' and played 'Last Train Home' at the end. Brilliant. There is something undoubtedly healing about a lot of his melodic pieces.
I grew up listening to this. Hehehe, I remember being kind of embarrassed becauseI thought my dad was SO WEIRD for listening to this. Me and my brother would make fun of it sometimes. But I did kind of like it at the time and now I listen to it and it gives me memories/makes me think. :3
I first came across Pat's music in 1990 while living in Los Angeles and listening to the radio station 94.7 The WAVE - KTWV-FM Los Angeles. I have been listening to Pat's music since then and beside purchasing his CD's I had the opportunity to see the PMG live at The Greek Theater in 1995. All these years I have been under the impression that the vocals were performed by a group of children. Imagine my utter amazement when I decided to look for the live video today and saw that it was Mark (RIP Mark) and Dave. Pat and company are in a stratosphere all by themselves. Thank you Mark and Dave for your unbelievable vocalization in this track.
They are not overdubbed. This masterpiece would be a totally different song with "normal" mens voices. The voices from a children`s choir are sampled into the synth lines while singing. It`exotic, delicate and cool!
1. Pat's pick looks like it's held very loosely. Amazing. 2. I'd like it if the drums were more amplified. 3. RIP to my dearly departed friend, the beautiful Ms. Lovie Carolina. In her Bhuddist spiritualism, this song held a special place.
I'm still waiting for the movie to be made from this cd. The whole cd is arranged is such a way that really does tell a story of love found and love lost.
Love this tune and bought the CD when it came out and wore it out. The vid I could prob do without. There is a certain magic lost when you see something other than what I dreamt about while listening to this so many years ago. Certainly wasn't a few dudes singing in falsetto.
So, I was at the London Hammersmith Apollo concert, on the U.K. leg of this Secret Story tour.... and ... what's there to say? The concert was the masterpiece herein this, the opening piece, based on Buoung Suong, a Cambodian hymn. And that right there is Pat Metheny Group.... as Spiritual realm. I now realise how lucky I was to be there. --Pat M., thanks for decades of this...if that even begins to cover it.
This Album is so beautiful, i've worn out 3 cd's of "secret story" THis cd makes me want to be a better musician, even though creating something this beautiful seems kind of impossible in my life time.
I am planning on seeing Orchestrion on October 8 in Englewood, NJ. As usual he will take me to places I have never been. That is what makes him such an outstanding performer, including the musicians and people he surrounds himself with. I am glad to be among them. Thanks for the post.
Thank you so much for posting ~ this one is new to me. What a magnificent talent Pat is, along with the ability to collaborate with those offering consistent diversity (is that possible, apparently!)
Too, I remember calling TLOML, Robin, one day. She was in her classroom. Painting, after the kids had left. And she was playing this. omg. her and this song. life does not get better than than.
oh god!!! this tune, with letter from home, last train home, as it is, gathering sky, first circle, and then i knew....are my favorites!!!. wow this is the first time i hear this tune and i could say... well i'm not sure but these oriental voices with dave blamires and mark ledford reminds me to india or somewhere else in asia.... it's so beautiful
there is a sequencer running in the background with some strings, percussion and vocals. The band plays on top over it. So the original Cambodian girls are there, aswel as Blamires and Ledford.
2:42... He enters and walks the stage the same way he walks this earth.. as the greatest of them all.. Ladies and Gentleman, I give you..... Pat Metheny. -Standing ovation-
Mark and Dave's vocals were unreal... Rest in peace Mark... Peace and Love to all the Pat fans.... BETTER DAYS AHEAD
Pat Metheny's "Secret Story" IS my favorite album of all time. It's the intersection where Genius Ave. & Creativity Blvd. meet. Pure delight.
i agree with you , the best album .
with the most devastating opening track! above the treetops still sets my hair on end.......
when i heard it i knew he was a genius -
That, We Live Here, The Way Up, and Question And Answer MAKES Metheny greatest musician ever??
Couldn’t agree with you more Charles
I don't just "Like" this. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this!!!!
The one time when CZcams needs a repeat option.
It has it
One of the most beautiful songs I've heard and makes me cry almost everytime.....feeling the beauty, depth and integrity of the sound.
This tune touches something deep inside of you and tells a story without words. Masterpiece
R.I.P Mark Ledford!!!
I will always find this song hauntingly beautiful. Thank you Father, for exposing me to this kind of music...
No doubt about the majestic composition and performance of this masterpiece. For years - begore seeing the video, I always envisioned a small group of young Cambodian girls singing the hauntingly beautiful "verses". RIP Mark.

Funny, I imagined a japanese girl singing in the bath while washing her legs.
@@susanjohnson5446 Matheny envisioned the devastating atom bombs appearing over the treetops in Japan.
@@mikaelhoelge852 Either way, it's about that young girl Innocence just before it all ended with bombs above the treetops in Japan in WWll.
@@dme1016 Thank you very much for clarifying.
This song and this enchanting performance hit a zone in my soul so completely and exquisitely! My God!
I loved the Secret Story album. It was surreal. And so was the Secret Story tour. Pat and the rest of the band are amazing musicians.
This is just one of the best pieces of music ever.
Pat, you can make a grown man cry.
Thanks for the memories. Thanks for setting the mood in new mexico, calif. and now back in Texas. you have provided a soundtrack to my life and i am deeply in debt to you and yours. Buenos caminos, mi amigo estimado.
Right here in the heart. How can you write such beauty. This special desynchronization is beyond the pale.
I love the album version, but this version took my breath away! This is my favourite track of Metheny's Thank you for posting I would of loved to have been at this concert!
Goose bumps!!! One of my favourite albums ever ....

+pat557 I'm gonna start running to more relaxing music now, thanks for the insight lol :)
I just can't get enough of Pat Metheny's and Lyle Mays' work together. I can listen all day.
One of the best memories of an evening with friends was a dinner party where the host played Metheny. I asked who was playing because I did not know Pat's music twenty years ago. simple a perfect chant above the treetops
I've loved Pat..PMG since i was 10 yrs old.. I'm now 44...man i guess i had damm good taste as a youngster. Saw the Secret Story tour twice in 92...and i think i left my body during the show.
Better than the studioversion! R.i.p Mark Ledford...
Pat's live solo really exceeds the recorded version. Both are great, but live is the best!
+Ron Horn I definitely agree with u
agree ron - i saw this live on that tour and i wasn't sure how they would reproduce this on stage and they exceeded my wildest expectations - my hairs stood on end for the whole gig!
Agree, Pat's solo on the live version of his songs is always better that the recorded version IMO
Es una obra de arte esta cancion
Y lo mas increible es que a creado un monton de estas obras geniales.

The song is so beautiful...sometimes I tear up....
The bass and the keyboards, together in the beginning are just incredible. It is an adaptation of a Cambodian spiritual song.

Such a beautiful song. The choir sounds really give this song a mystical and awe-inspiring feeling to it. Music is remarkable.
As much as I love this track.. this live performance was at the same time of my birthday 😊
I'm still waiting for the movie to be made from this cd. The whole cd is arranged is such a way that really does tell a story of love found and love lost.
AMAZING...No tengo palabras para describir las emociones que siento.
Pat brings us the Paradise ...
Thank you so much for posting this!
unsurpassed, a real beauty....the subtle guitar intro is something to kill for

music will never sound more beautiful and enchanting than this. rob
For those who "unliked" this; what is there to ’unlike’?! … This is "top of the art" of orchestral jazz/improvisation music.
I am planning on seeing Orchestrion on October 8 in Englewood, NJ. As usual he will take me to places I have never been. That is what makes him such an outstanding performer, including the musicians and people he surrounds himself with. I am glad to be among them. Thanks for the post.
