  • A little-known fact about #Romania is that throughout #history, it was home to a large community of #Jewish people.
#Oradea, a city in the northern part of #Transylvania, which was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire during World War II, was hosting approximately 35,000 Jews.
In fact, the Satmar Hasidic group has its origins in Satu-Mare, a city close to Oradea, where it was established by Joel Teitelbaum in 1905.
During the persecution of the Jewish people, as the Austro-Hungarian Empire was a close ally of Nazi Germany, an order was made to move all Jews to one part of the city, which was later known as the Jewish Ghetto.
The Ghetto was the largest in Transylvania and the second largest in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Unfortunately, this was also the starting point for deportation, where the last train left from Oradea to Auschwitz on the 27th of June 1944, carrying 2,819 people.
While the #Holocaust will remain one of the darkest periods in human history, today, in Romania we celebrate the Jewish heritage and contribution to the local culture, cuisine, architecture, and traditions.
Our local guide, Ioan-Gavril, will take you on a walking tour of Oradea to discover the beautiful Jewish Heritage, such as the Sion Neolog Synagogue, which is the third-largest synagogue in Europe.
