  • How can you tell the difference between hybrid and common Bermudagrass? It's extremely hard but I am starting to identify which type of Bermuda I have growing in my front yard by starting to look closely at the seed heads and trying to harvest my own Bermudagrass seeds to see if I can get them to grow.

Brian, I think I like your grass science lesson videos the best. The science of grass is so interesting. Thank you for your videos, and keep up the good work!

Nice to see you doing nerdy videos again. Here I'm collecting grass. Only a few so far. But looking to grow this collection soon lol.

I watched this video with such focused attention - thank-you for the deep dive! One puzzlement I have from watching is: If a hybrid plant does not produce pollen, then wouldn't that mean no actual seed could be produced? But you harvested something that looks like seed, so that makes me think that there had been pollen from somewhere - even a neighboring yard. I have heard that it is important to remove seedheads from hybrid lawns because any resulting seeds can't be the same hybrid (because of the pollen), so even after you sprout those seeds, you still may not know what the rest of your lawn is/was.
I am actually striving to eliminate some unknown Bermuda that has encroached into about 4,000 sq.ft. of my Buffalo lawn. I have applied Tenacity to starve it (3 applications so far this season) and I noticed that after each application, runners running and flowers flowering. In my imagination, I 'heard' the grass saying, "Hmm.. I can't get my phtotsynthesis going here... better move (runners) and/or produce seeds to come alive in the future when conditions are better because it looks like it's curtains for me." I took this as a good sign that I was having an impact, and that if it can't produce food well but is producing so much plant material that it was using up its rhizome's food reserves and perhaps will die over the winter. I've been hand-pulling/trimming the runners to contain the spread, and mowing & bagging the seedheads to reduce their impact in the future. But I didn't know how long it would take for the seedheads to produce viable seeds, so I've been mowing every other day (at 2 inches because the stems have been that short yet I don't want to go lower because the Buffalo didn't like it).
Your video is helping me see that I probably don't need to bag any more because the cuttings don't contain actual seed - just flowers. And your video has helped me to go out there and give them a good look to verify how far along they actually are.
    Thanks for your help!

Thanks for this. So the advantage of inert seed heads (hybrids) is that they cannot mess up someone else’s lawn who may have different grass, right?

Thats one of the benefits of hybrids, the seed heads don't spread in the wind into the neighbors...however they can still spread laterally via stolons and rhizomes into the neighbors. The other main benefit of hybrids is that they are created to have different characteristics that are typically better than what you usually find in common. If you want a Bermuda that spreads faster or slower you can find a hybrid that does that, if you want one that has higher heat or drought tolerance you can find a hybrid for that. If you want one that has a longer green growing season in the Spring and Fall you can find one like that. You can look for hybrids that have better disease resistance, or present a deeper green, or have a tighter canopy. Usually people choose hybrids for one of those reasons and because Bermuda sod is usually some type of hybrid whether the buyer of the sod knows it or not. The seed head viability is just a simple way to tell the difference.
