- Hey friends! Today we're going to be taking a look at what I think is one of the BEST Ableton Live Max for Live devices - Shaper MIDI.

Sorry for the audio quality in the intro and outro! I was trying a bit of a different filming technique. 🙃
Thank u so much for putting this out for free! I’ve been dying for this feature
You're welcome! Thanks for watching! :)
Great video, cool device! Thanks!
Thank you! ☺️
Cool find!
Impressive hands expression performance.
You gave been fundamental I. My growth as a producer. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much! That's so good to hear. :)
FreakinFreakin’ awesome overview revamp
Cool feature... like arpegio
Oh this is sick! I don’t know how I’ve never known about this, can definitely see myself using it a lot. Cheers man!
No worries! Glad you found this video useful. 😁 Feel free to go and download the “fixed” version mentioned in the video! ☺️
Brilliant, thanks man
You're welcome! :D
So good and useful thank you🎉🎉🎉
You're welcome, thanks for watching! :)
Thanks so much for giving us the improved shaper for free! I've noticed a lot of max for live stuff fills up the undo buffer and it drives me crazy
You're welcome! It's an easy fix. Here's a quick vid by good guy Tom Cosm on how to do it yourself! czcams.com/video/fN5ouATKvPk/video.html
Great video, would love to see what you’d do with some of our devices….
Thank you! Yeah I'd love to check some of them out. Send me an email! :)
Great video! My only issue with Shaper is... it's not polyphonic in spite of supposedly being MPE enabled. I mean: I expected it would allow per voice modulation of MPE instruments (as in Bitwig), for instance, per note/voice modulation of a filter, but unfortunately each new note retriggers the curve affecting all current active voices :(
Agreed with this! Unfortunately because of the way M4L implements this stuff it's not really possible because it effectively 'automates' the parameter. Hopefully we'll see some Bitwig-style modulators in the future!
wow thank you I didnt know this existed. I regret buying a bunch of 3rd party midi plugins, its all in Live 11 :)
You're welcome! Yep, Live has some really fantastic features that are a bit harder to find sometimes. :)
Great thought process. And thanks for the new improved version of the Shaper!! How does one remove the history buffer from being triggered from any Max for live devices? Also curious how you got the min/max to be controllable
Thanks!!
It's actually a fairly simple process. I can't remember off the top of my head the exact menu items but you have to go to 'parameters' then change any parameter that you don't want to have a history buffer to 'hidden' (I think it is) and for anything you want mappable you need to change it to 'automated and stored'.
Very interesting. Is there a way to get this to output cc# to sweep an external synth parameter connected to a midi cable? Thanks.
Not natively but you would be able to set it up using a max for live device that could send CC#. There are a few out there, I think there's some called like CCsend or something. :)
CPU Question :
I'm using this device for live performances (for "chopping" of my voice and other instruments), and it appears to be extremly CPU heavy somehow... I have quite a beast as a laptop ( i7-1255U 10 cores, 32gb Ram, SSD 2TB) and I'm still getting CPU overload when using couple instances for this M4L Plugin...
Any advice ?
Yeah unfortunately these modulation devices can eat up a bunch of CPU because of the way they're built. I'm not a Max guru but I know that there are some people out there who have built less CPU intensive versions, however they are a little more limiting because of that. Just the way it works unfortunately 😢
its funny, i had been looking for something like serums lfo/env for max for live for a while. cause shaper is great, but because its just constantly running, it couldn't do things i wanted. but oh. turns out theres a shaper midi. which is the same thing, but responds to midi triggers. lol i spent at least a few hours trying to find a device online that i already had installed hahahah
I have an issue where the release of a midi note (either by keyboard, or from the piano roll) sends another signal for shaper to activate. So it activates once for a note hit and then again for the release. Just wondering if you (or anyone here) has any idea how to solve this so the envelope only activates on the initial midi note. Cheers.
Hm, what version of the Shaper MIDI are you using? I can't replicate this issue but it could be something to do with maybe a different version of it or potentially you're using a MIDI effect that's also triggering a signal on the note off message.
@@matttinklermusic Just using the default version that is built in with live 11. Midi monitor shows that any time I release a note (through any means) it sends a midi signal on that note with a velocity of 0. Which doesnt trigger an actual note but triggers shaper.
Dont remember this happening until recently but I have no idea how to fix it.
Awesome, has this been updated by Ableton or do I still need to get your fixed version? Also, show cats next time.
Still hasn't been updated as far as I'm aware, so feel free to go and download my version! :)
Hahah, if they decide to pop in I'll be sure to! 😂
If only they had an option to lock to the DAW too!
Do you mean to lock to the DAW timeline? You can do this with the Shaper effect, which is basically an audio effect version of this same tool. :)
Interesting... I just learned how to make a mess out of a sound...
It's all about context! 😂
Hello, your device is not available anymore?
So sorry! I recently went through a change to my channel name and the link was wrong. It has been updated now. :)
What's the difference between Shaper MIDI and Shaper? They seem to be the same?
Great question!
Shaper MIDI is a MIDI triggered shaper, meaning that it will only send control data when it is triggered by a MIDI signal or note. Shaper on the other hand sends a continuous control signal, which is either synced to your session tempo or can be free-running. Shaper also has a re-trigger button that you can use to manually trigger the shape. Shaper MIDI loads as a MIDI effect (input MIDI, output MIDI) and Shaper loads as an audio effect, although doesn't process any audio. Aside from that, they work identically, but I prefer the MIDI one because I often use it in syntheses. :)
@@matttinklermusic Thank you for that! Another question I have since playing around with it, but how can I get Shaper MIDI to only trigger on midi note press only, instead of both midi note press and release by default? Or is that when I'd use Shaper with re-trigger?
Great question again! I just tested and it looks like indeed the inbuilt Shaper MIDI retriggers on a MIDI release, but if you download my edited one then that will work and only trigger on the MIDI note on. I think I did some editing in the M4L device to change that. You can grab it from the link in the video description! :)
it's a shame you can't have vertical gridding like e.g. in DRAMBO ios !!!
Agreed! I'm not a Max for Live guru but I can have a look and see if it's possible to implement...
how to control the outgreyed parameter...
is this now automation or modulation..i think it s automation...you called modulation...!
this outgreying destroy the midicontroller option ..push 2 , midifighter , no control must be automation I think ..
this outgreyed function is useless with Controllers..min max value cant even be not controlled mapped..
funny strange live called this modulation too but its automation.
It's a weird hybrid between modulation and automation, because you're right, it overtakes the parameter, but it modulates the position of that parameter with the shape of the shaper. The greyed out parameter can't be adjusted manually, which is annoying for sure, but you can get around that by manipulating the min and max values of the mapping. The min and max value can't be mapped by default, you're right, which is why I made an edited version where the min and max values can be mapped and automated! :)
@@matttinklermusic i tested for a year bitwig and its a dream with the modulation stuff and its total different than AL.
I have now live 11.2 but since weeks we try & look to speciall m4l devices to fix that mod.problem but I think now its deeply old intigrated behavior of live and cant be fixed...
I try to build a live set like in bitwig but the modulaltion control we cant reproduce in live .. thx for help great channel...
@Sebbo Sebbo Yeah I'm really keen to try out Bitwig actually, it's been on my list since it was released! I really like the look of the modulation in it, looks like it's fantastic for sound design so I'm excited! In the meantime, Live does have some cool stuff with M4L, even if the integration could be better.
shame that it isnt polyphonic
Agreed!!
