I'm about 1 hr in to this video at the moment. I put a new Stihl chain on I purchased a couple years ago, 2weeks ago. The first thing I did was hand filed that machine grind so it would actually cut and last. I haven't had to sharpen it in 2 weeks of off and on cutting. Green Ash, Oak and maple. Some stuff was 36" around. Probably 4 -5 chords of wood. Buckin' you truly are a master at filing and showing us how to keep it cutting. No gadgets just the feel of the steel. Love it!
You've helped me more than I could ever describe. When I first started doing firewood I couldn't sharpen my chains for the life of me . Thanks to you Buckin I am able to sharpen correctly. Thank you for all of you knowledge and help my friend 🙏
I don't get a lot of down time in my tree business, when I do I enjoy catching up on your channel buddy. Thank you for the positive energy the world so needs today. God Bless ALL!
I started watching you years back because I was fascinated with the vintage saws, I share the same enthusiasm for the old iron, years later the advice and inspiration I've received from all of your content is invaluable, thank you so much for all you do Buckin keep um Rollin my friend
Buckin even us old men and women as I am 65 yrs young in an old man body but I do refuse to allow life to whip me and I do enjoy teaching what I know so by watching all ur videos I do learn more plus in the beginning of watching u I thought of course u r crazy but hey I think that is the secret to life by being somewhat crazy but safe sir buckin all I got to say is thank you for just being a simple minded country boy as I am also
Billy your sole is golden. We're lucky you share it with us. So many of us young and old would do well to learn to file and learn to live as better people. Or at least learn where to look in our selves to become better people. It would be awesome to hang out on a tail gate with buckin Billy. Until then keep filein fellin, livein n learnin.
I am a working stiff, too. Marine Sergeants are that way. You might say that I grew up at Parris Island, SC in the summer of 1966. Responsibility goes with that job. I will be 79 in a month, so I cannot do the things that I used to.
lol... ive spent my life slavin stacking bricks feeding chippers, digging your ditches, I was a devoted husband for years. I lost it all and all I want is my hot rod that none of that ever gave me...😂😂 got nuthing else to strive for Im old and broken just wanna have what fun there is left in life...lol...guess it really is a two way street...no one knows the answers to life, we each have our own.
Buckin, you are really on to something I think with that Baby C. For it to be basically cutting at the same speed as square ground is super impressive. And given the fact the double bevel files are so expensive nowadays it could be a game changer!
Buckin you have to get a semi mud flap and screw it down on your tailgate, you wont believe the difference. It makes workin on saws so much more pleasant.
These videos are a trip I love it,and the quality is impressive. I ran across this stuff yesterday by accident I can't quit watching. Where in the world are you at?
Hey Billy I would love to see a session on what causes chain stretching and how to avoid. I cut a lot of firewood and since I moved to a more powerful chainsaw I have noticed I am constantly tightening and replacing chains due to chains stretching.
Just wondering how often you tune up the bar? Thank you for all your saw tips. I run 3 Huskys including one old 268 that I put a big bore top end on. love it!
Great video, entertaining and informative as always. No idea how many vintage saws you own but imagine many and therefore intermittent use of any particular unit? One might get skipped for? Years? Wonder what you do to preserve between uses, would you be winterizing after each use? Annual winterizing of all? Some other system? Or just let fate decide and fix as you go?
Thank you BBR for teaching us, this was a nice lesson. An off topic question for you: what do you think about the husky 272 xp? Have you ever tried it? I mean the old ones
That Husqvarna Bar is a "painted" Sugihara.. They are a good solid bar. :) Wonder if there is a price difference for the Grey Paint. :) Good show BTW. :)
You're confusing me a bit now billy mate, you just just said no gullet and you're not cutting, but on another video where you where you were showing us how to use a double bevel file, you were reiterating the importance of no gullet on full chisel chains.anyway love your videos mate! You're 1 top guy!! Much appreciated.
Buckin, because of my MS I have a little trouble getting my left hand to follow the actions of my right, so I just file both cutters from my right hand side. And other than being hard on files (and needing more frequent replacement) do YOU see any issues with that? The saw cuts straight and even my friend that has been in the tree service for years (he was a climber for many years until his knees just wouldn’t allow for it) said that it’s a great cutter. I’m just curious and would like some opinion(s).
Buckin: two questions: 1. Do you spray your chain and bar with Lucas chain spray? I do and I find the saw runs better and pinches less and 2. Do you use a bench grinder on your rakers? Saves a lot of time and if you keep the proper shape no trouble.
I kind of have a question regarding the rakers also on a “ground” chain…. How often do u file rakers if at all while running the chain square filed or ground????
All chain that is sharpened (to a point in its life) needs to have its depth gauges addressed. Just remember that the shorter the cutter gets that the fewer times that you’ll have to address the “rakers” (depth gauges). DON’T use a static gauge similar to the kind that you “MIGHT” put on top of the chain/bar but use a dynamic style similar to the ones that BBR uses. Husky makes one and I “think” that even Stihl has one but I’m not sure on Stihl. Remember that the chain actually rocks back and forth so the shorter the cutters get the bigger the bite of wood they take if you use the static style, and that’s why you need to use that dynamic type that I’m talking about. Carlton is the one that Buckin prefers but they are made from “UNOBTAINIOM” whithout a bank loan 😮 BUT they are very good and a file doesn’t seem to touch them whereas the others it seems to.
Hi buckin,I've been following you you for a last three years . I have 2 mccullchainsaws i need your help on getting the, to run . But my firstroblem is replacement gasket for the top of the McCullough 10 10 pro.
Hey buckin billy ray I need a question answered I just hung an old double but axe and sharpened it but I’m still not happy with it is it possible I can mail it to you and fix what I did wrong and make a video on a proper restoration
About 15 seconds before you cut yourself I was looking down at my sore finger wondering how I managed to slip and not only cut through my nail to the flesh underneath on a sharpened tooth, but also impale the same finger into the dogs a minute later. Bar oil and sawdust is no good for a wound. Got 3 chains done without incident after I settled down.
I do not hand file rocked chains. I put rockedhand filed it since. on boththem on havemy chain grinder. I got a Stihl 024 that I rebuilt. Its chain was rocked on both sides. I reground it to 30 degrees and it cut like a houseafire. I have hand filed it since.
Hey buckin I've got a question for ya. I have a 76cc poulan super 33. I want to throw a longer bar on so I'm not breaking my back. I'm thinking a 32 or 24. The problem I'm running into is the rpms. They only get about 6500. Would the bar length cause a problem? It comes with an 18in bar and I'm not liking it lol
What kind of saw is it? Lots of questions here but not a lot off information about it. Please give more information. Never mind, I just saw it. How’s the tune for it? Does it burble (four stroke) a tiny amount when the bar/chain is mounted? If not then it needs better tuning.
@@ToddAdams1234 I have it tuned to factory which is 6500rpms. Sounds good and cuts fine. Definitely not winning any speed contest. Had plenty of torque just cuts slow cause of the rpms
@@ChevyGuy70 I’d recommend having it ported but that’s most likely cost prohibitive, so you might want to look into getting a different saw😮 Sorry for being the rain on your parade but I’ve tried.
@@ToddAdams1234 Saw is definitely a keeper 😂 I like collecting old saws and running em. I'd love to get it ported but I definitely don't have the money as a UGA college student. Maybe one day. Thank you brother for responding and letting me know your thoughts 👍
ALL of us have done that AT LEAST once. Anyone (that uses a saw much) that says that they haven’t is a fib teller 😮 We’ve all done it, the trick is to just learn from it and to help prevent it from a repeat but it’s still going to happen. But the longer that we cut the fewer times that it’ll happen. 😊
Madsens calls it a triangular chisel bit file. They have an online catalog but if you order you must call and TALK to them. I was in service and I preferred that style of business because it ultimately helped out the customer.

AMEN, IF YOU CANT GET DIRTY YOU MIGHT AS WELL GO PUT YOUR PERFUME ON

Hey Buckin what is that file called with the triangular edges where do you get them
I believe they call them a double bevel. Any good saw shop will have them or online
