    Hi Sophie thanks for the tip. I use a lot of ginger in cooking and I wondered if I could give it to my conure. I have just cut him a small piece and he was not impressed, he just chucked it on the floor 😂. Oh well never mind, it was worth a try. I have started liquidising any fruit and veg I have left over then putting into an ice cube tray. He gets birdie fruit and veg ice lollies, which he seems to enjoy.

      Usually the things that cause hormonal surges in birds via diet are warm foods, mushy foods, lots of sugary foods, or a sudden abundance of food!

    Unfortunately Atlas the cockatiel does not like ginger, (it is actually one of the only foods so far that he doesn't like!) but I still really enjoyed this video! I love learning more about parrot nutrition, and I love this style of video! The first foods that come to my mind for future videos are mealworms and turmeric, but there are so many foods you could talk about!

    ooh i had no idea ginger was good for birds! definitely going to give some to them ! also question! is it fine to take cockatiels on a long distance train? and just tips for travelling with them in general-(( not by plane at all)) . the train allows bringing any pets in a carrier, of course once theyre trained with it, just not sure how theyd manage there for 4-5 hours total going by car/train !! ( its to a place where they have tons of room outside, and another big cage with their stuff, so once theyre there theres no probnlem. )

    • @BirdNerdSophie
      @BirdNerdSophie  Před 2 lety +1

      They will be fine as long as they are comfortable in their carrier, can access food and water, and you ideally sit somewhere where there is ventilation like being able to open a little window for fresh air 😊

      @livi6886 Před 2 lety +1

      @@BirdNerdSophie are fumes from disinfectants, air fresheners, etc a concern when traveling with parrots? How could I ensure that my bird does not breathe in toxic fumes on a plane or train?

    • @BirdNerdSophie
      @BirdNerdSophie  Před 2 lety +1

      @@livi6886 not so much - usually planes won't spray much for the risk of irritating human respiratory systems! You can only do so much when trying to avoid these kinds of things on the road!

    The birds like ginger in chunks and I'll give them a stick of it every two or three weeks, should I give it to them more often or less frequently...?

    • @BirdNerdSophie
      @BirdNerdSophie  Před 2 lety +1

    Does it stimulate hormones like how sweet potato and mushy foods do? I’m currently bird sitting some budgies who have lived with a happy hut in their cage all their life and they’re super agitated so I’m trying to curb their hormones as much as possible. I’m also trying to feed them veggies cus they’ve been on an all seed diet all their life. Is ginger a good place to start? Do Budgies typically enjoy ginger?

    • @BirdNerdSophie
      @BirdNerdSophie  Před 2 lety

      No, ginger isn’t known to stimulate hormones! And yes budgies often enjoy ginger! It’s sweet and savoury at the same time so very tasty for birds! 😊
