- I have a theory about orange... Do you avoid using orange alcohol markers, pencils, watercolor, or other art supplies until fall when Halloween pumpkins and blazing autumn leaves demand strong doses of orange?
Join me, illustrator and art instructor, Amy Shulke from VanillaArts.com as we explore the use of orange in our art and coloring. Using Copic Marker YR16 "Apricot" as an example, I'll walk you through the specifics of orange marker ink-- what makes this orange special and how to blend with it.
I've got some great tips for working with orange Copic Markers and you'll see what makes orange alcohol ink generally harder to blend. Then using color theory, I demonstrate blending combinations for YR16 plus underpaint colors and pencil accent colors for shade and highlight. Color orange with depth, dimension, and greater realism using my suggestions for YR16 desaturation.
This is an applied color theory exercise. This is not a coloring lesson and it is not intended as an alcohol marker blending tutorial.

What's your favorite YR16 blending combination? Or how about favorite underpaint or pencil colors? I love hearing about new color combinations. Share with us here in the comments! And by the way, the Postcard kit is here: www.vanillaarts.com/shop/postcard-kit1
Orange is my favorite color and I use it year-round. I formerly used a different alcohol marker brand with not one, but three beautiful natural orange ranges. Since moving exclusively to Copic I've found myself a little bored, relying on the YR16-YR12 blend. I appreciate the master class on YR16 and the nudge to explore more interesting orangey blends!
Absolutely LOVE LOVE you and your color theory! I love how you break down the color wheel and challenge us to look for the not so obviously colors. Takes my coloring from cartoon to art. I hope you will eventually get back to doing some coloring retreats.
I've had a year of family health horrors, so the retreats are on hold until we're able to continue construction on the art barn. As soon as we're able, I'll be hosting several retreats each year.
1. I have a coworker who looooves orange/70s earthy motifs, im half tempted to show her these vids just for that.
2. This content is very brain satisfying and really helps me understand my markers better. I tend to go for high saturation due to just what I like/habit. But Ive always wanted to improve my understanding of shading and what colours to use. Thank you!
"Brain satisfying" is the best compliment ever! Thank you so much!
What a wonderful video. I am not an artist. Just color images but this is so helpful for me to understand the reason behind it.
Glad it was helpful!
What a great video! I love how you explain things, you don’t make things complicated! Thank you so much for sharing this video! I just found your channel, I’m so excited to start watching your other videos, I’m a new subscriber!😊❤️👍🏼
Thank you so much! New video coming later today about red. Let me know what you think!
Fantastic video Amy!!
Thank you!! More color videos coming!
Loved 😍 😍 this video!! Such great information 👌 Thank you
So glad you enjoyed the video and found it useful, Cheri!
Gonna order copic marker thanks
Thanks for the great information. I am amazed at colorist like you!
I'm glad you can make use of the info, happy to help! I use the markers the same way I use paint which makes a gigantic difference in the results versus the typical colorist approach. You can do it too!
This is a fabulous explanation of orange! I love those pumpkin spice shades. I don't even use markers, but I still learn a lot from you about color and what we are really seeing. Thank you🙂
I'm so glad! I'm like you, I watch and read more about paint than markers but the color truths are consistent across the various art supplies. What medium do you work in?
I am not an artist at all. I make cards for fun, and I use colored pencils. @@AmyShulke
@@sarahgartrell6108 Sounds artistic to me!
Thank you your amazing
Nice to see you watching so many videos and thanks for the feedback on each. In the early days of building a channel, it really helps to hear what's resonating with people. I appreciate your time.
Orange is my favorite color
It's my son's favorite as well; he's loved it since kindergarten. Thanks for watching!
I love that blending card! Do you have those on your website?
The swatch sheets are part of the Autumn Postcards kit. 6 postcard images including the pumpkin here and this week's mushrooms (hint) plus swatch cards for all six colors. Winter set with 6 new colors coming late Nov or early Dec. www.vanillaarts.com/shop/postcard-kit1
Guessing I’m an outlier. Orange couch, and chair. A number of orange shirts, jackets, and hats, mittens, a couple of orange kayaks. Teak and rosewood furniture. Used to have an orange car. Can you guess my favourite colour?😂
I love this comment! It's funny, my grandmother was a purple person, she wore it every day. My mother in law decorates all blue and my mom and dad were kinda crazy about green outdoor spraypaint. I'm now thrilled to have met my very first orange person. You're an outlier but that's awesome!
I use orange year round
I wish more people would. It's a lovely color which deserves more appreciation.
