You’re telling me the driest tone in history has no pedals on it? No fucking way
🤪
@@glory_be_to_God777 darn tootin
Yup, hot tubes make the best distortion
Have been playing 35 yrs, never used a pedal. If you are half the guitar player you think you are, you don't need them.
Angus has "REAL TALENT" . . .
Yeah way, an SG through a Marshall is a mystical thing (when it is overdriven).
His pedal is number 11 on the volume knob
He actually has a whole rack unit
😂😂
Sure poor AC/DC had to use 9volte batteries 🪫 no transformers were harmed.
It’s one more louder than 10
@@flouisbaileyIt’s Spinal Tap Movie reference.
He does that duck dance. He cannot get to the pedals. 🤣
That indeed, makes a lot of sense. Some guitarists have switches on their guitars to switch on effects. If it works for them. all good. I can't in all honesty, be bothered. I am just playing a backing instrument.
When he managed to get to the pedals, he simply destroyed them with the dancing.
I call it rocking into the next universe.
I love that dance!❤❤❤
My thought, also!! 😆
That is why he gets such a wide variety of tones.
The only “effect” that Young has ever implemented into his signal chain was the Schaffer-Vega Diversity System - a wireless unit that he would begin using in 1977 live and in the studio. It works like a clean boost
Volume and tone knobs can do miracles
Hahahaha
This is sarcasm, right? You never can tell.
@@humantacos9800 Ha, yes, I was just kidding around...
Whenever they say guitarists don't use pedals it always turns out that they do use pedals
Apparently he had one pedal in his signal chain. A noise suppressor. But it’s in the rack with his wireless controllers. I think my point was that his sound is pretty simple. He doesn’t use a distortion pedal or even a reverb it would seem.
I personally know and played with scores of guitarists my age that dont use pedals. I personally occasionally use a dunlop and I used to use a tuner for a few years, but reverted to tuning by ear a long time ago. In the 2k's I had a pedal board that consisted of a dozen broken or super cheap pedals that weren't actually connected to anything, but I kept stepping on one or the other from time to time, because that was required for a professional look.
2 things players won't tell you what's in their chain and all their settings...most will be vague a sensei will never teach the moves he uses to take the most people down
I don’t use a pedal. I have a Rat pedal that I like occasionally but I’m just happy playing plugged in to the amp. Also I don’t even have a cab amp combo. I guess I just realized I suck 🫠
(Kidding, I’ve always known i suck)😊
You're in good company.
“The only effect between the guitar and the amp is me”
That's what Uncle Ted says
But it ain't true. He has a whole rack setup in his rig
I’d rather listen to Britney Spears
You mean: Me - my amp and whole pa system/ sound crew, engenieres and pro sound board.
@@stalwartzero7001 Each to their own. I'll stick to Acca Dacca...lol.
It's now well known he utilized the pre amp from his Shaeffer/Vega transmitter for a defining sound. They now sell a reissue in pedal form by Solo Dallas as well as the radio transmitter itself.
In his case it was a byproduct of the usage. Not purposeful
Yeah, it accidentally gave him more gain and acted like a clean boost pedal.
The signature sound of ACDC comes from his brother Malcolms tone.
The real secret sauce, Angus has even said so himself (in GW interview, possibly the same one)
Malcolm Young IS (was) AC/DC.
The signature sound of ac/dc is ac/dc. 😉
He is verily missed.
His atomic clock rythm was truly something else
He infact uses 2 pedals. A recreation of his wireless unit he calls his fizz box and a very lightly engaged noise gate. Watch the rig rundown on CZcams.
The Schaffer Vega isn’t a pedal. The noise gate is a pedal but kept in the rack with all his new wireless gear. I’m guessing he didn’t use the noise pedal back in the day.
@@rocknreplaythey get the point, they're just being difficult. In a lot of those old records like TNT he isn't layering the guitar with a shit ton of effects
@@jevinday quite astute, my friend.
I always thought he was a big Helix man.
He uses a preamp infront of his amp which boosts the marshall. He may think its just a guitar and amp but there is a few things in-between.
Most big guitarist don't know much of what is used and the tech has all the knowledge, they just work with the guitarist to get the sound they want.
This why loads are moving to fractals, kempers, and load boxes so the sound is worked on in the room then stored and taken on tour and its stable each night.
Actually,.....he uses an old Schaeffer wireless unit from 77-76. It compresses his tone and gives a mid punch. Which they now off as a pedal from Dallas Audio
Truth!
Yep it's got gain and an Amp is a distortion pedal so he's boosting his signal not to mention he may use slaves which further adds gain
Thanks mate, l knew someone had made a pedal, just cdnt rmmbr the name!
@@baabaabaa-yp2jhyep! Wireless unit from the 70s, wireless units were new, and it came with a signal loss, so, Ken Schaffer added a pre-amp to the unit to boost the signal, so it gave that classic tone/clean crunch. Very interesting! I bought the Solodallas Storm and it’s fantastic
@@dylanhickey7509 I commented a company l cdnt rmmbr the name of made a preamp, Guitarist mag were pretty impressed .👍🏼
angus’s tone: rich mf
That certainly helps. Just one of the Marshall heads he uses are upwards of $3000.
I did yes. I do love hearing the dynamic way he plays the guitar and he talks about being of small stature and making his own chords because of his smaller hands. Very cool humble guy
he doesn't use pedals...he has a whole rack for his sound...and has a back up one too...
Yes Van Helen would go back stag and change out. Pickups in a matter of minutes he was amazing .
The rack has no effects in it though, which was the point of the video. You can look it up online. It’s all amps and power conditioners. No effects. The only thing remotely close is his wireless unit from the 70’s which supposedly inadvertently did some compression and eq changes to the guitar and he liked it so he kept using it
@@Aaron-zh4kj Yep, some Italian bloke made a preamp, that approximates the rack unit Angus has used since they got big here (Australia).
Probably stems from the first albums, there's definitely compression used.
Edit: A Schafer or something? It was in Guitarist mag a few yrs back.
@@Aaron-zh4kjthat’s right. He even records in the studio with the radio pack because of the unique treble tone he says it has!
@@rudybenavides9681Eddie was one of the best guitar techs in history
Did you know that Angus young is responsible for the hearing problems of Brian Johnson? 😂😂
I believe it. An article I read said Angus’ stage volume was around 125 decibels! A jet engine is 136. Imagine that type of volume in your ears three times a week for 120 days a year!
He's certainly responsible for my hearing problems lol
@paulwells4203 Mine too.
"Play it loud or don't play it at all"!
@@rocknreplay But so are most live bands that play those massive concerts. And 136 doesn't sound far away from 125, but in decibels, that's a massive difference.
I'll sleep tonight now knowing this. Thanks.
When you crank the gain up on a marshall amp it's the best sounding Distortion you can get it's smooth not too grainy
Which Marshall?
Apparently Angus keeps his gain and tone settings around half mast
No gain on old style marshals. Crank it and get power amp saturation.
And those monster high stacks look hot as hell.
Lies.
Actually, the wireless system he used live added quite a bit of compression to his signal. He liked it so much they also used it in the studio...
I read they actually hollowed out the back of one of his SG’s to fit the transmitter so it wouldn’t be visible for live performances.
Interesting
I played right through the sounding board and had it adjusted by the sound man sometimes just to play my part as a lead guitarst .
You need to attach the pedals to his feet, because he’s almost never in one place on stage. His wild antics and performance made me a diehard fan of ACDC.
No idea what you just said…..
@@freeman7079it’s not just reading, it’s comprehension as well
"uses extremely loud volumes" There's an understatement.
His sound actually comes from his Schaffer-Vega Diversity System .. Look it up! it's why his sound changed so much from his early albums to Highway to Hell & Back in Black
Their sound can be more attributed to his brother's tone; a Gretch guitar straight to Marshall tube amps.
Gretsch must have a great rhythm reputation (I’ve never even touched one! )
@@DanChad-er9lhYou should try one, they have some pretty cool guitars to offer ngl
@@josku5 yes I should, a buddy has the Elelectromatic double jet with a bigsby and TV Jones pickups sounds amazing!
@@blakjack3053 tbh be careful with the bigsby, I’ve grown to kinda not like mine 😅 I mean it’s cool as a vibrato arm but the thing is that it just doesn’t hold in tune, AT ALL 😭
@@DanChad-er9lh a Gretsch and something with normal humbuckers sound great live and recorded
In the early days he was straight into the amp. In 77-86 he was using the shaffer wrieless as he was getting his lead pulled when he went out to the crowd. Hed go back to cable if it failed which it did most likely why he stopped using it and switched to a modern one in 88-present. He played with amps alot. 2203s he would crank the master as well as plexis. Im pretty sure in 88-92 he was using a racks mesa power and preamps kinda cool. He then went to wizard in mid 90s-2012 then back to modded plexi heads with added master. From 2000s hes been on thebshure wireless unit most likely into the amps. He probably stsrted the hush pedal lightly to hust get rid of the hiss during breaks and guitar switches. He added the schaffer replica in 2014. Thsts going through modded marshall 1987x thats wired like a jcm800
Yes to all that. Very well said.
You’re making me crazy with that talk. Don’t stop immediately. I’m putting your entire comment on a t shirt tomorrow.
Loving you Angus!!! ❤❤❤
His tone comes from Marshall Plexi amps.
Yup. The “pedal” he says he uses is a wireless guitar system and I guess it has its own preamp so adds even more gain to the signal.
10 of em
And his wireless
And fifteen 4x12 cabinets 🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻
A dream rig 😂
Which ones though? Cause there was one or two different types made yknow
The SG.... best guitar ever as far s I'm concerned..
me too
Hands down. It's the versatility that does it for me.
SG tone is horrible
@santiagohb2276 bummer.... mine was great. Better than my Les in my opinion. Maybe I got lucky.
I'd get Epiphone SG, but I'm worried neck dive might be a dealbreaker.
It remains the loudest concert I have ever been too and I've been too many. My ears rang for 3 days.
That's INSANE he could have that light of a touch!!! What a beast!!!
It’s just a Marshall plexi head cranked. lol I have a few myself.
The wireless system is the iconic sound of Angus
Yep. You and I seems to be the only ones with that knowledge 😅
It doesn't need battery, It gets energy from that constant moving and headbanging on the stage. Pedals aren't in range
Turn volume/gain to Max on the amp and guitar and control your volume with the master volume. Play around with treble mids and lows for desired tone.
bingo ! .... I have not used a pedal in 10 years now.
Delight in plainness 😊
...Whatever works for him....
Can't argue with his success.
Angus proves that tubes make better dynamics than any analog or digital circuits.
Literally every recording you've ever heard of him was routed through a transistor based device that modified the signal from his instrument in order to encode it into radio waves (with some added compression and filtering to minimise the impact of electromagnetic interference from broadcasting and electronic devices emitting radiation) , then it was rectified by another transistor based amp with an antenna attached to it that took those radio waves and translated them back into an electrical current before finally being plugged into the amplifier.
@casanovafunkenstein5090
Yeah, those analog recording machines captured those tube dynamics and tone.
Go try a fractal unit on the road vs a marshall head.... you'll keep taking the fractal and leave the marshall at home.
Womp womp you wouldn’t be able to tell them apart in a blind test.
A tube circuit is an analogue circuit
a guitar ans a wall of marshall thats all you need when you know how to play
Or even if you don’t know how to play. Same thing.
For sure! A wall of marshalls can cover all the guitar effects you might want like the dozens of diferent types of modulations and things like fuzz, ring modulation and all kinds of OD and distortion types. You just gotta know how to play, right?
he just lets hell do the reverb
👹
Dynamics babyyyy
Angus uses his volume knob a lot.
I kind of prefer that method as well. I tried the boost pedal but found it to be cumbersome.
It goes to 11
Why not just 10?
A Spinal Tap moment.
Because 11 is better than 10.
Also , his Tone begins in his fingers.
Remember that every player is unique. 😊
How is tone in the finger?
Shut up with this
A guitarist can affect the tone quite a bit with subtle things such as finger pressure, string attack, palm muting, etc. Playing with dynamics and style is all about the hands.
@@jonweston6294 that's technic not tone
Nah, tone means tone. It’s a word that is used to mean the quality and characteristic of a sound. A person’s technique/fingers absolutely changes the quality and characteristic of the sound.
Started playing after Xmas, love the videos can’t wait to start on release date next year with your guidance.
I had no idea but I can absolutely relate. I played in working bands for 25 years and gave up on pedals too
You dont need pedals when your Rhythm Guitarist was the Greatest of all Time.
Why are you talking about James Heatfield now?
@@JimBoom92 Hetfield.
Kirk: WAH
@@JimBoom92 James is a beast of Rhythm Guitarrist but Mustaine doesn't joke too
I agree 100 %. Then i need to mention Alexi Laiho as well.
Angus’s tone comes from his skills.
It’s something in the Foster’s
Damn straight
Try a brass nut on the guitar it rings out quit a difference too.
I'm thankful for Angus sharing his gift with the world 🤘😎🙌
Analog signal through a tube does have a gnarly sound… I built a tubescreamer pedal that helps with being able to get good tone out of the guitar without making myself deaf by cranking a big amp in my tiny room
This must be why all AC/DC songs sound exactly alike
You evidently are oblivious to the fact that very few guitarists used pedals before the '80s. Most of them plugged straight in to their amps and used their guitar volume and tone knobs to shape their sound. Go and look at Peter Green's rig, or Paul Kossoff, or Cream-era Clapton (at most he had a wah and nothing else). It's hilarious when modern pedal players think that pedals were always a staple of guitar tone.
@@Dagger_323 I’m not oblivious to that fact at all you fool. I was simply stating that all of AC/DCs songs sound exactly alike. Which anyone with ears can tell
@@HipsterDoofus100 Yeah, sure kiddo.
@@Dagger_323 ok boy. You have a weird obsession with men who wear kilts. Good luck with that
@@HipsterDoofus100 Swing and a miss, kiddo. I rarely listen to AC/DC and that had nothing to do with my comment.
SG and a Marshall that’s all you need 👍
Thanks for the info.
Nothing fancy, no bells or whistles, just a man and his machine .
He's greatness all packaged up.
You forgot about his wireless unit... His tech said in an interview that those wireless units are a big part of his tone...😎👍
A wireless unit is not an effect.
The distorted sound came from playing near the saturation level, so that a stronger note would go past saturation.
You and I should have a coffee.
You don't need pedals when you have VOLUME and GAIN.
When researching this short I read an article that said his stage wedges clocked in at 125 decibels! That’s insanely loud. We attended a Foo Fighters concert and I downloaded a dB matter to my phone and they were about 125 decibels. Loudest concert I have ever been to. Wore ear plugs luckily. Can’t imagine two hours of that intensity.
Ehhhhh no
volume and gain sure add everything you might want from delay, to reverb, to tremolo, to chorus, to fuzz, to 8 bit sounds, to ring modulation, and all the other effects that are born from the prior mentioned and all the other crazy ones that are too unique to put into a class of effects
Eddie Van Halen was the same way. ❤
You would be right if Van Halen wasn't using a phaser, flanger, delay, chorus, octaver, EQ pedal, wah and a variac.
It was all in his amp. How do you guys not know that amps often have some of that built in?
wrong. there are multiple guitar effects that were largely used/popularized by van halen. emt plate reverb, the legendary exhoplex, MXR phase 90 and 6 band EQ, Flanger pedals, Chorus pedals, Wah pedals, rackmounted setups in the 90s, Ed used no overdrive or distortion pedal and acted like he was a “straight into the amp guy” because technically most of the effects were in post. but EVH basically was hendrix 2.0 in terms of pushing the frontier of guitar effects and stompboxes.
Lol.
Wrong
And all that time he didn’t spend mucking about with dials, he spent crafting some of the most memorable riffs ever ❤
Yea its a Marshall jtm45 turned all the way up with kt66 tubes, ive played through that amp all the way up,its amazing.
I’d love to get one but the $3000 price tag is a bit steep! 😎

@mattharris5067 yeah, but no. Classic case of blind fandom.
Yo, I’ve been a Guitarist since 1983 & when I started playing Guitar I had MANY PEDALS, but around my 15th year of playing I reduced my pedal usage to…..Delay, Reverb, Wah-Wah & Distortion, & periodically if I’m playing some Funk or R&B I’ll add a Chorus, Phase or Tremelo sound!
I've been at it a long time myself (1977) - and yes , pedals were huge in the 1980s ... but the more you learn , the less you need them.... I have not used a pedal in 10 years now !
Awe man that SG with them lightning bolt inlays ⚡️⚡️⚡️
Can you imagine him keeping his energy having to futz around with pedals?
With the right " Pickups " and the right " Guitar Amp " you can get all of the Tones you need with just the Guitar Volume and Tone Knobs . 🎸
Not if you don't want to work at high volume. People care more about their hearing now, give me a quiet amp/DI and a pedalboard and I'm happy.
Well you still need to be able to play. And obviously it’s hard to sound just like angus. So much is in the fingers too. But sure, the rig is obviously big important
If you don’t have the eight speaker no combo of amp and pickups will het you even close to the og tone.
No you can't.
Don't take it as an insult but rather a matter of fact, this is a very ignorant comment. The variety of tones you get from a guitar + amp setup (a simple amp with clean and distorted channels) is nothing compared to the almost infinite (if not infinite) possibilities you have with pedals. If you play guitar you'd be amazed at how much different tones you can get from a guitar using effects, there are dozens of them and each of them come in hundreds of different shapes.
EVH didn't use any distortion pedals either. Just a industrial size dimmer switch 😳😎
Wrong.
Dayum! This makes sense! Many have already mentioned it, but yeah. All the stage movements he does is proof of that.
Love these guys, You Rock !!
So the reason he gave is because he's worried the batteries will run out. Most pedals can be plugged in and even if they can't you can usually just modify it to be plugged in.
Maybe he was referring to early on when he played with just an amp and his guitar at small venues. I assume he didn’t really even start using them.
I couldn’t agree more with not using pedals. I’ve been playing for decades, and though I’ve used pedals a few times through the years, including top quality high dollar pedals, I always end up going back to guitar straight into the amp to get what I feel sounds best. The only exceptions would be an El Capistan tape echo delay, and a reverb pedal that I use occasionally.
got a gibson sg and marshall avt 50 half stack
and still enjoy a digi tech 150 with that set up.
This info is insane. I never knew this. Dude knows how to hit it.A Gibson SG is perfect for what he does and I love SGs. First show I ever saw as a 16 year old in Charleston, West Virginia. They came through several times and I got to see them many times all over the US. Blew me away. One of them has sadly already left us. Angus is my absolute favorite guitar player and I named my beloved dog after him. If I had a son I would’ve named him the same.Thank you so much for picking up a guitar, Angus. When my little brother was about TEN yrs old he said to me, “You have to hear this band I just heard.” What a band. And thanks to Australia for their gift to the world! ♥️🇺🇸
I don’t care!😏

EVH did the same.
Other than his MXR Phase 90 and MXR Flanger and an Echoplex tape delay, sure, Eddie didn’t use effects.

Angus also likes the “rizz” he gets out of his wireless set up. He actually uses it in the studio.
Pedals... Batteries... My man. We've had wires for over 100 years now 😂
This is what you call a absolute professional
Percussion guitarist. Glorious and brutal ROCK! Angus rules!
He painted with a single colour, and it worked very well for him.
who needs pedals when you can play the instrument
He keeps it simple! And he has the great sound for that reason.
I did know this...
And he also says there is something about his wireless rig that gives some saturation as well.
Cheers.
Criminally underrated
I love my effects and modelers. But I respect the fuck out of that lol
Word up angus
Love your mucic and I seen them 3 times 😅
If he doesn't like to use pedals then he probably really doesn't like to use computers
He also uses the dirty channel on his amp, aka the overdrive switch
Hardly surprising given that acdc basic guitar tone never changes
Angus doesnt just play through one Marshall amps. He plays through 7 or 8 Marshall. His guitar tech said he keeps his volume knob around 7 or 8 and then turns it to 10 when he needs that little extreme kick in the ass. Priemer Guitar did a rig rundown on Angus and Stevie Young gear a few years back. Everyone should watch it. Its pretty amazing how simple his rig is.
it's a thing of beauty but not cheap. The special transformer, the custom splitter and a few dozen Marshall heads with their own repair tech backstage.
you are correct he does not use any pedals.. but he does use a very special wireless unit called the Schaffer-Vega Diversity System that has a great sounding pre-amp in it.. this goes way back to a couple years before the Back In Black album.
It’s called power tube breakup. Want that crunch you gotta heat up those big tubes
The only “effect” that Young has ever implemented into his signal chain was the Schaffer-Vega Diversity System - a wireless unit that he would begin using in 1977 live and in the studio. It works like a clean boost
Saw them during their Black Ice tour when I about 12, absolutely awesome.
It's that overdrive button on the amp. The OG distortion
Or, basically how everyone used to play before pedals were invented and widely available. 🎸 🤘🏻
thats right, play it loud
Angus plays so light on the strings, but his distortion makes it sound like he is hammering the guitar.
My understanding is that he had parallel inputs (my first fender amp actually had this). Your signal runs into a clean channel AND distortion channel simultaneously and you just mix the volume of each, (obviously clean channel low, gain channel high). You can CLEARLY hear the parallel input channels on, say, the Whole Lotta Rosie breakdown.
His wireless pack adds some decibels (boost) and colors the tone so this is mostly accurate.
I did a separate video on that. I was trying to point out that he didn't use like reverb or delay, or stuff like that, or pedals in general. Just a simple set up. The wireless system he used came along in 77 I think, so he didn't always have it, and it just happened to add to his sound, sort of by accident.
Awesome I’ll check it out!
I’m not an AC/DC fan, but I’d be a fool to say their guitar tones don’t kick major ass. Just a no bullshit solid balls-through-the-wall tone that punches you in the face.
Well said. Like Shakespeare.
Malcolm was the one responsible for AC DC's unique sound.
