Members of the public tried to stop the incident and a visitor managed to wrestle a spray can from one of the protesters. According to Wiltshire police, two people have been arrested. The prime minister condemned the incident, saying 'this is a disgraceful act of vandalism to one of the UK's and the world's oldest and most important monuments'. Just Stop Oil say they took action to demand the incoming government sign up to a legally binding treaty to phase out fossil fuels by 2030

I was at Stonehenge last month and there was much security there. I just cannot understand why they did NOT do their job properly in protecting the site.
Exactly normally no one is allowed anywhere near the stones the security guards should be sacked and get a new company to secure this historic site
The problem is the UK is so terrible with it's justice system the security could be sued by the JSO people committing the crime, it's like this everywhere
I was there not long ago and there wasn't one guard in sight. They must increase and decrease their security with expected tourism numbers.

Not just any stones. A historical landmark.
I believe Druidism sees the henge as a holy place. Whilst a small religion. Shouldn’t the police act upon this as serious hate crime? Desecration of a church or temple wouldn’t be tolerated so don’t let this be!
Stonehenge is protected under the ancient monuments and archaeoligical arear act 1979 and a unesco world heritage site. So if they are not charged it will be a total disgrace.
The Druids always had ceremonies at Stone Henge on Summer Solstice …. they were pushed out about 15 years ago and practice their ceremonies in a field near by now
Just for the record, Paganism / Druidism isn't that small of a faith, there's normally been over 20,000 people at the Henge to celebrate the Solstice, and many many more who visit of sacred sites around the country on the same day.
I'm just horrified they have done this to such a spiritual landmark 😢
It would be naive to think the druids themselves did not use offerings that could have stained or splashed the stones like blood from animal sacrifice, perfume, ashes, etc

The activists thought of that already - they didn't actually use paint, they used a starch powder. It just washes off in the next rain. Biodegradable, too. Media coverage tends to skip over that bit, because the angrier the audience the more they watch.
Ignore your previous reply, that powder needed to be removed with air not water, with water, the pores in the rock absorb the spray.

What silly little children. Go to bed without any supper!
The diesel trucks that are now going to be deployed by the council to clean up the mess. Own goal I think...
The 'paint' used is just a starch dye. Biodegradable and water-soluble. It'll wash off in the next rain, leaving no trace. Though I wouldn't be surprised if the council sends someone to clean it anyway, not wanting to wait upon the weather.
Please tell me they are in jail for all eternity!

Vandalism, defiling an ancient monument!! Disgusting!!
And Mainstream media was invited to record this crazy party. Not coincidence at all. World is big show. Truman show which is collapsing 😊😊😊
It's only powder...
It's quite possible the stone have had worse..
Biodegradable starch powder. It washes off with a little water, leaving no trace. It'll be gone with the next heavy rain, if the council don't send someone out with a tank of water and hose first. But the media coverage tends to ignore that little detail - see how the headline here inaccurately describes it as 'paint.' Because giving people the impression that this was an act of destruction against a venerated historic site results in a lot more anger, and an angry audience are more inclined to keep watching and yelling, and thus see more advertising.
@@vylbird8014 Yeah.. a few drops of that acid rain we've all gotten used to, and it'll all wash out..
There is bacteria on those stones that we cannot find anywhere else that need to be studied. Educate yourself before speaking. The starch could remove some.

Dangerous thing to do to disrespect those stones especially near the solstice

Shocking
It survived thousands of years but couldn't survive the entitlement millennial generation
that was a boomer and a gen z
Ah yes, those gray-haired millenials
Not really true. What you see today is only a tiny remnant of a site once far, far larger - over those thousands of years most of the stones were lost. Scavenged for building material. Fragments of it are to be found in historic buildings all around. The main reason there's anything left at all is the location in the middle of nowhere, away from any sizable population center for most of the history of the site - it was just too much trouble to haul stone from it. As for the latest action, there's no actual damage - the protesters wanted to draw attention, but they used a biodegradable starch dye. It just washes off, no damage.
