      Geara zulu So you'd rather be able to watch it rot away first hand, than know it is being properly looked after somewhere else?
      The trouble with these old beasts is that a lick of paint every decade will not halt the effects of weather. They need to be taken care of properly if we want them to be a legacy for the future.

      It is not a question of disrespect, it is a question of good sense because you don't leave a restored Elephant outside to rot again! Bovingtone is the proper place and hopefully they finish restoring inside! I don't know what is happening at Aberdeen proving ground once a very popular museum to visit...

    Please keep our Elefant warm and happy at your lovely civilian-run and charitably-funded museum. Since the US Army's in charge of spending their own money to build our new museum, you can bet we'll never see her again and the whole matter will be eventually abandoned due to "budgetary concerns". "We get x number of dollars from Congress. And you want us to spend some of that limited amount on old tanks that can't kill anything anymore instead of bombs and missiles??? Yeah, sure thing, maybe next year", the generals will say.
    At least they had the dignity to send them to good homes instead of leaving them to rust in the open like at Kubinka (also controlled by the military). Maybe if you're good we'll send you Anzio Annie, too. I don't think you've got one of those.

      Its a long term loan. The museum in Aberdeen is closing down, and the collection is either being sent to the new armor museum in Ft. Lee or distributed to various museums in the interim. Bovington is not only well equipped to care for the Ferdinand/Elefant, but it also fits nicely with their collection of extremely rare armored vehicles. At least at Bovington people can still go and see it, whereas if it were still in the US it would likely end up in a warehouse until the new Ft. Lee museum opens in 2020.

    I'll bet the first thing people thought when they saw this thing going down the road was that they thought it was some kind of modern military vehicle when in fact this vehicle was in service when their parents were young.

    Anyone here knows anything about motorized cranes like the two lifting the Elefant? Why do they always lift the wheels off the ground, and so high at that? You'd think they'd want to keep the CG as low as possible. I can't see a benefit to it.

      Whitetiger This is the premodification model, the Elefant not the Ferdinando. There is some subtle distinction

    • @williamadams6940
      @williamadams6940 Před 7 lety

      Whitetiger the ferdinand has a machine gun mount to counter infantry. they realised after the Elefant was deployed at kursk that without a machine gun it was not good. I think that is the distinction

    • @williamadams6940

    • @sirmoke9646
      @sirmoke9646 Před 7 lety

      The interior is in poor condition and it will never run on the original engine\drivetrain. Even if they could restore it by some miracle it is too complicated and unreliable.
