  • This is probably one of the best high school wind ensembles in the United States. California is built different yo. I mean, population is like a lot of states, so the all-state band is going to be gas!! and it was!!! piece is Paprikash by Julie Giroux, and this performance was conducted by Julie Giroux isn't that wild??
    watch without commentary (unlisted video): • Paprikash no commentary
    I love playing the Bass Clarinet, almost as much as I love the Soprano or Contrabass Clarinet. I'm currently a high school student playing these, and I really love being in band with all my friend. What a great Clarinet world we live in, am I right Mozart?
    This video is nothing like middle schooler playing flight of the bumblebee, or how to circular breath in 10 minutes. This video is an all new Clarinet video filled with so much Clarinet and fun.

    I recently had my 9th grade honor band concert as first chair Bass Clarinet. Here’s hoping I can go through with my plan to play Contrabass Clarinet just so I make allstate band

      Additional info about Honor Band: The hardest piece that we played was a Grade 2.5. I have to play a Grade 4 in my High School band. We cut the two grade 3 pieces that they gave us

      Contrabass clarinet would be really cool to learn, I play Bb Clarinet but I'd be willing to learn, idk how much different it would be

      @@idkman7481as someone who has played bass clarinet all my life and got the opportunity to play contra, let me tell you. It’s awesome! Lots more air that you need to play that beast, but definitely worth it! Your lungs will definitely get buff by the time you’re done for sure.

      @@idkman7481completely different beast. You will have to live with learning something that feels familiar yet plays so differently. Just making notes over the register happen takes a lot of different finesse. Low notes sound fuzzy because you won't know how to control your tone at first. But it's a thrill to play contra once you get the hang of it!
      (Just don't mind the headaches of the instrument rattling your skull from playing loud)

    Hey man I was in that same band with you! I sat third bassoon and man everything you say is true. it was my first time being in an all state ensemble and it couldn’t have been more humbling. That feeling of playing paprikash the for the first time during rehearsal and hearing everyone absolutely nail their parts could not have been cooler and it felt like every single time we stopped playing everyone around me looked shocked at how good we sounded. Truly was an amazing experience and I’m hoping I make wind symphony next year.

    As someone who did county, region, and All-state choir as well as all-national choir back in HS (NAfME, not ACDA), it's an insanely fun experience. I also did county band in 7th-9th grades, and I got a chance to hear the county bands every year I wasn't in them. Trombone 1 as well.
    Some of my favorite pieces I've either sung or played in these honor ensembles.

    Nice! What state were you in? I did ILMEA honors all state this year, principal bass clarinet! We did a lot of fun pieces, but my favorite is called Lost Vegas-- you should look it up-- not too difficult but there are some fun bass clarinet moments!

    I'm not American but when I was in high school, I was the only student from my school that made the provincial honour band in the year I auditioned. Now we weren't anywhere near as a good as your all-state band, but hearing you talk about what it's like to be around so many other good musicians who were just as into music as you were reminds me of just how intimidating, humbling, but also just how incredible I found the whole experience. Thanks for making this video and congrats on making all-state! You sound absolutely terrific.

    Damn, we had 12 students that made all state. The way you said all state made it sound more competitive. We had a principal 1st trumpet and principal all state saxophone 🎷
    Im trying to auditiond for all state during senior year, im a trumpet.

    • @bassclarinetbrian
      @bassclarinetbrian  Před 5 měsíci +1

      All-state is pretty competitive, but going to a school with a lot of music resources and higher income helps a lot. It's pretty common to have a few schools with 10-30 kids in all state just because they have so many more resources than kids at other schools

    cool experience to watch, my take on music having only one primary use case of sharing to people is that it is an overall an outdated idea to me. I think it's important to consider the artist's intentions and whether or not you like the piece doesn't make it good or bad, moreso just not for you. there are extreme examples from both sides to past experimental artists such as anton Webern whose intention was to do the unconventional, to modern times where trap music and edm are whats most popular. I think all of them are valuable to the space of music. Now let's talk about AI and music generation in the next 20-30 years lol

    • @bassclarinetbrian
      @bassclarinetbrian  Před 6 měsíci +2

      Yeah I agree, I think I like your take more than mine haha. End of the day we're in a world where one can write whatever music, and share it online for free anytime. I think the variety of music is because of the internet giving everybody a voice, and that aspect of it is awesome. I think most would much rather there be music they don't like as opposed to everything sounding the same. AI is scary for composing, but I feel like AI can't really sense emotion or how to envoke it in humans. IDK here's hoping that there are some things that are uniquely human left in the world in 30 years...

    Personally I prefer being a metronome because I’m too lazy to figure it out.
    Its always nice to have eighth notes as the fastest notes, while the clerinets next to you are trynna grapple with sextuplets, the eighth note triplets and we over here play quarter notes.

    • @Gcarcsin
      @Gcarcsin Před 18 dny

      It depends on the competition for the year. You might make it for all state because there are not a lot of bass clarinets that play in New York so you have a shot but it’s easier if your score is a little higher
