  • Something a bit different from usual as i'm not in the woods for once But still in the outdoors.
    Join me and some friends we go deep sea fishing off Scotland's west coast for giant Skate. We set out from Oban on the Laura Dawn II skippered by Leigh Taylor (some people will have been out on this boat with Ronnie Campbell) and head for a deep water mark near the isle of Mull. It was one guys first time skate fishing and he had a lengthy 2 hour fight with his first ever Skate. Also one other guy got his PB Skate. Don't want to spoil it all for you so hope you enjoy. Let me know what you think and feel free to ask questions.

      Cheers mate. Yeah every fish is checked to see if previously caught, recorded and tagged if previously uncaught. We regularly have marine biologists out with us which is cool to see. Every year we get a better picture of the health and movement of these great creatures through actions of fishers.

    Dog fish and skates. Are there no others? Or we just fished out by trawler in the past 30 or years?

    • @MhorOutdoors
      @MhorOutdoors  Před 2 lety

      There are other species but we were targeting Skate. But yes trawlers have been destructive for sure. In fact the Skate itself is endangered. Part of our fishing on that boat is to scan every skate caught and record them. Also to tag any new fish. Been out with marine biologists joining us several times to. It’s good to see.

      @@stephenswistchew7720 I couldn’t agree more. Never does a big fish taste better than a smaller one. Same for most animals. Also if you kill the big ones you kill the big fish gene pool.

    • @MhorOutdoors
      @MhorOutdoors  Před 2 lety +1

      @@stephenswistchew7720 other people shouldn’t think your mad. They should take a leaf out of your book. Fishing is hunting to me and fish get taken for the table. That’s how it’s always been. But there needs to be balance in nature. We have the ability to wipe out species if we allow it. That’s why we need rules that protect or like you said the next generation won’t have what we have. It’s sad how the world is heading with fish wiped out on industrial scale by factory ships or worse by pollution and habitat destruction. Like you said about your cod. Our sea lochs are going the same way through letting the boats in to close.

    • @MhorOutdoors
      @MhorOutdoors  Před rokem

      Na, there’s actually a good deal more. Nothing like the pacific though. You guys are lucky. We get Tuna, blue shark, six gill, Porbeagle, tope and spurs etc and few more good species. Then there’s a lot of good eating one.
      That mark was just shy of 100 fathoms.
