  • Always wanted one! A Classic W109 1972 Mercedes 300sel came up and I could not say no! The previous owner bought it in the 70's and after over 40 years of ownership he gave me the opportunity to own this beautiful car. Original interior, air suspension and a smooth running 4.5L V8! Can't wait to dig in and get this car back on the road. Thanks for watching!
    Here is the link to the wooden models. They are available on Etsy and are locally made! Check it out!

    Old Mercedes tip....if it ain't broke don't fix it and if you replace a part, the part next to it may fail. Awesome machine, good luck!

    Congratulations David. First thing to check before you put on any great mileage on is the timing chain, tensioner and guides. Also while you're in there check the cam gears and the small plastic clips that hold the cam oilers. They are made of plastic and over the years get brittle and can lead to the oiler tube falling off the cam towers and thus starving the cams of oil. The timing chain should be changed out if its over 100k. If it has a master link its been done. Factory ones didn't have a master link. Check for looseness at the top of the cam gear. There is also engine timing marks that will show how much stretch you may have.Let me know if you need help with that. Its the Achilles heal of these engines. But once done, rock solid. I've had mine now for over 8 years and its amazing. There are a few other things you should check. Such as the fuel injection hoses going into the injectors. Short pieces around 1 1/2 long. These should be replaced with correct fuel injection hose. Leaking here is a known fire risk. Let me know if you need any other help or advice. You have a really nice looking W109. Love the Burl wood. Congratulations. Cheers John.

      Woah! Thanks for the information. I’ll definitely have a look at the timing chain and plastic clips. I’m going to be installing new injectors, new fuel lines, rebuilding brakes and I will be doing the air suspension as well. Do you know where I can get a good workshop manual?

    Such a stately presence gliding down even a gravel road! Like you, when I think of Mercedes, the W108/W109 models are what stands out for me. The very first Mercedes I ever drove when I was a 16yo boy was a silver 1970 280SEL with jet black leather interior. It was love at first sight! That was 40 years ago and I have owned a Mercedes of some sort ever since. Still looking for a good W108 or W109 LWB to add to my collection. Hope you will be doing more videos of your W109, it's certainly a keeper!

      I was 20 and visiting Berlin. The Wall was still up. Friend there had his father's silver 300SEL. He smoked a gently aromatic pipe. Memory of a rainy night with the scent of leather and pipe tobacco. After a fine dinner we went out on the town, closing down several bars. Have wanted a car like that ever since.

    Under the headrest, in the seat back, are chromed posts which, when raised, fit into the opening in the bottom of the headrest to secure it in place. Just pull upward.
    If you can still find them- there is a product called Dura-Levers. They attach, with a single Allen set screw, to each of the four broken dash controls. Much easier than removing the dash.
    That dusty road is not good for the engine, change air filter, oil & oil filter & cooler, wash engine at a self-spray car wash. Wash, polish, wax that body. ('71 280SE Blau in family since 1976.)

    Looks like a great car! Congrats. The difference between the W108 and W109 models were suspension. W108 had coil spring suspension, W109s had air suspension. Both 108 and 109 were available in both wheelbases. Most of the parts you'll need to repair things like the heater controls are available. The air suspension will cost you a bunch, so be prepared. But if this is a long-term purchase, it looks like you got a real solid example. I'm a bit jealous!

    • @davidsgarage
      @davidsgarage  Před 3 lety +1

      I understood a w108 can still have the V8 but the w109 was the one with air suspension and a little more chrome/ wood trim. I might be mistaken!

    • @romans7177

    • @zoltanhorvath7373
      @zoltanhorvath7373 Před 3 lety

      The engines M189, M130 (inline six) and M116, M117 (V8) was all avaliable in both W108 and W109 chassies. Only the M100 (6,3 V8) was to had in the W109 (and the W100).
      The differences between the 109 to the 108 is basically the air suspension. There were also a different seating layout patterns and some wooden and chrome peices in favour of the 109.
      Some goofy interesting facts to these beauties are:
      - That in europe the 6,3 had the american layout of the front headlights as standard equipement and theese could also to be had if you paid extra when ordering a new W108. The orange/red sidemarkers were an american market gadget.
      - Another is that the combination of a 4-speed manual gearbox and V8 was sold as a standard equipment here in europe in the 280 SE/SEL 3,5 and the 300 SEL 3,5. But since theese luxury cars were bought by industrial tycoons on the hight end of the annual income, the automatic gearbox was preffered. There were plans to put the 717 (5-speed) gearbox in production but no cars were ever sold with this combo even though the original repair manuals were updated with this setup.
      280 SE 3,5 sold in 11.309 units and only 2342 were manual
      280 SEL 3,5 sold in 951 units and only 206 were manual
      300 SEL 3,5 sold in 9583 units and only 1065 were manual

    The 300 sel has retained most of its value compared to new however you will spend multiple amounts getting the air suspension renewed to the cost of thousands of dollars periodically cough up thousands of dollars every so often and you will sell it to some ignorant buyer. I see this problem on 420 sel s among other Mercedes benzes sitting in drive ways for months or years and other models. Do your homework before buying a Mercedes and do not buy a Mercedes with modules in it designed to get you back to the dealer periodically for repairs this is why I drive a Buick park Avenue ultra ,bullet proof engine btw you can spend thousands of dollars on a brand new mercedes your first year despite your warranty

    Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned
    from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the
    Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025
    on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas
    station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station fuel pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime.
