- Always wanted one! A Classic W109 1972 Mercedes 300sel came up and I could not say no! The previous owner bought it in the 70's and after over 40 years of ownership he gave me the opportunity to own this beautiful car. Original interior, air suspension and a smooth running 4.5L V8! Can't wait to dig in and get this car back on the road. Thanks for watching!
Here is the link to the wooden models. They are available on Etsy and are locally made! Check it out!

Old Mercedes tip....if it ain't broke don't fix it and if you replace a part, the part next to it may fail. Awesome machine, good luck!
Solid gold advice! you end up pushing the "broken" around the system part by part
@@THIRSTYGUMS she's a keeper!
Right you are, sir. How ignorant Americans often are of how other carriages work.
It's mind blowing that some of the things in this car is still cool today. Mercedes Benz was way ahead of their time.
Congratulations David. First thing to check before you put on any great mileage on is the timing chain, tensioner and guides. Also while you're in there check the cam gears and the small plastic clips that hold the cam oilers. They are made of plastic and over the years get brittle and can lead to the oiler tube falling off the cam towers and thus starving the cams of oil. The timing chain should be changed out if its over 100k. If it has a master link its been done. Factory ones didn't have a master link. Check for looseness at the top of the cam gear. There is also engine timing marks that will show how much stretch you may have.Let me know if you need help with that. Its the Achilles heal of these engines. But once done, rock solid. I've had mine now for over 8 years and its amazing. There are a few other things you should check. Such as the fuel injection hoses going into the injectors. Short pieces around 1 1/2 long. These should be replaced with correct fuel injection hose. Leaking here is a known fire risk. Let me know if you need any other help or advice. You have a really nice looking W109. Love the Burl wood. Congratulations. Cheers John.
Woah! Thanks for the information. I’ll definitely have a look at the timing chain and plastic clips. I’m going to be installing new injectors, new fuel lines, rebuilding brakes and I will be doing the air suspension as well. Do you know where I can get a good workshop manual?
@@davidsgarage I would keep an eye on ebay for the proper w108/109 workshop manual. Also I started a couple of Facebook groups, Mercedes Maintenance and Mercedes Rescue. We have over 40k combined members. Come join us, post a request for a manual I'm sure there's one out there for you. Also we'd love to see your new 109 and watch you progress. There's a lot of knowledge there and people are happy and willing to help. Cheers John🍻
@@mercedesmaintenance.6339 Hi
Love my 1979 rhd 280s.still on the road and the 180c class 1957.pased my driving test on in Trinidad.Go Mercedes Benz.Gerald Amoroso..
Lovely car. For me, the original documentation is what makes it perfect.
Totally agree!
W109 - One of my most favorite all-time...
Congratulations. beautiful car
My father had a 1972 but his was a 220 model,. not as luxurious as your 300 but I can understand why you like this Mercedes Benz.
Beautiful luxury to be sure.
Really a wonderful car! I have a 300SEL 6.3 with the same dark red paint and two tone cognac interior. Keep and enjoy!
Love mercedes interior colors because they are all bad habits. Cognac, tobacco lol
WOW!Goodness!I'm salivating!
What a beauty! Can’t wait to see more of it
Such a stately presence gliding down even a gravel road! Like you, when I think of Mercedes, the W108/W109 models are what stands out for me. The very first Mercedes I ever drove when I was a 16yo boy was a silver 1970 280SEL with jet black leather interior. It was love at first sight! That was 40 years ago and I have owned a Mercedes of some sort ever since. Still looking for a good W108 or W109 LWB to add to my collection. Hope you will be doing more videos of your W109, it's certainly a keeper!
I was 20 and visiting Berlin. The Wall was still up. Friend there had his father's silver 300SEL. He smoked a gently aromatic pipe. Memory of a rainy night with the scent of leather and pipe tobacco. After a fine dinner we went out on the town, closing down several bars. Have wanted a car like that ever since.
Under the headrest, in the seat back, are chromed posts which, when raised, fit into the opening in the bottom of the headrest to secure it in place. Just pull upward.
If you can still find them- there is a product called Dura-Levers. They attach, with a single Allen set screw, to each of the four broken dash controls. Much easier than removing the dash.
That dusty road is not good for the engine, change air filter, oil & oil filter & cooler, wash engine at a self-spray car wash. Wash, polish, wax that body. ('71 280SE Blau in family since 1976.)
Very good to know! Thank you!
Love those headlamps!!!
Looks like a great car! Congrats. The difference between the W108 and W109 models were suspension. W108 had coil spring suspension, W109s had air suspension. Both 108 and 109 were available in both wheelbases. Most of the parts you'll need to repair things like the heater controls are available. The air suspension will cost you a bunch, so be prepared. But if this is a long-term purchase, it looks like you got a real solid example. I'm a bit jealous!
Dude congrats! A magnificent car!
Nice! Please keep us posted.
That is super cool bro! Thanks for making this video. My dream is a W116 :)
Greetings from Ontario , your videos ,, your enthusiasm , taste in cars, and not being afraid to hit the road with them, awesome stuff. Love the Benz, it’s a keeper. Love all the older Mercedes. Your videos inspire me to give my 87 325IS some TLC and enjoy it more. Keep it up 👍
Thank you!
Great car!! To operate the fog lights, turn headlight switch one click to the right, then pull the knob out until it clicks. Fog lights should be on.
Awesome find congrats
Thanks man! I can’t wait to dig in!
Beautiful car...very! congrats!
Now that’s a really beautiful car.
Beautiful car! Enjoy it and drive her frequently.
So elegant.
What a lovely Car can’t believe your driving it on a Gravel road
wooooow, what a car :-) I remember my granddad had one of these, as a 3.5 model :-)
Nice tight German engineering. Had one in 70's Germany. Always made me happy to look at it... and the "plop" of the doors.
Basic difference between W108 and W109 is one has the in line 6 engine and the other has v8 engines. There are visual differences in the front too with different head lamps.
I understood a w108 can still have the V8 but the w109 was the one with air suspension and a little more chrome/ wood trim. I might be mistaken!
There is a 280se 4.5 and some 300sels came with inline 6 with manuals.
The engines M189, M130 (inline six) and M116, M117 (V8) was all avaliable in both W108 and W109 chassies. Only the M100 (6,3 V8) was to had in the W109 (and the W100).
The differences between the 109 to the 108 is basically the air suspension. There were also a different seating layout patterns and some wooden and chrome peices in favour of the 109.
Some goofy interesting facts to these beauties are:
- That in europe the 6,3 had the american layout of the front headlights as standard equipement and theese could also to be had if you paid extra when ordering a new W108. The orange/red sidemarkers were an american market gadget.
- Another is that the combination of a 4-speed manual gearbox and V8 was sold as a standard equipment here in europe in the 280 SE/SEL 3,5 and the 300 SEL 3,5. But since theese luxury cars were bought by industrial tycoons on the hight end of the annual income, the automatic gearbox was preffered. There were plans to put the 717 (5-speed) gearbox in production but no cars were ever sold with this combo even though the original repair manuals were updated with this setup.
280 SE 3,5 sold in 11.309 units and only 2342 were manual
280 SEL 3,5 sold in 951 units and only 206 were manual
300 SEL 3,5 sold in 9583 units and only 1065 were manual
GORGEOUS 😍
If it only goes down at the rear first, the problem is the non-return valve on the air tank under the left front wing (fender to you)
ahhh, ok. Good to know!
Fab !
I like it’s colour ,red maroon same my M/B w123 230E (1982). I ❤️ it .🇹🇭
Beautiful car
what a beauty
Congratulations. Awesome ride! I have a Brekina 1:87 scale of this car in the same color! Also subscribed!
Beautiful
Well done mate!I envy you.that's my dream car,but the 1972 280 SE
Absolutely wonderful that you've presented this fine automobile in its non-restored/non-refurbished state.

Collection car please restore very rare. Congratulations David very happy for you
I want one!!!
LOVE IT !!!!
Its realy a beutiful car, I love it.
Looks better at the proper stance.
One more thing. When you get to the suspension Air Valves. Let me know, I have a guy that is rebuilding mine, I'll give you the info. It's not in the States.
Please share! I've got a 108 but my bud has a 109 that needs work

Lucky you 😻😻😻😻
Es una maravilla,felicitaciones al dueño.
my favorite color !
Beautiful car, however, I like the original Euro version a bit more. Especially the headlights. Enjoy your car.
Well done enjoy
A beauty! Looks like she'll be keeping you busy but really in excellent condition. Great find. Now wouldn't she look pretty in the garage parked next to a Citroen DS?
Most of those I have seen have a rev counter where the clock is, and the clock is square on the left of the steering wheel
Only on the 6.3 is like this
......and if you bought the extra equipment of rev. counter when ordering a W108/W109.
At 7:19. This is not volume control! It's fader control.
Mercedes used this type of sound controls to nany models up to 123 series.
Ahh that’s good to know!
Very Nice 👌 Benz! Going on Trips to your favorite spots 😌 in this Classic will most definitely make you the Ladies Man , as most Ladies appreciate a Classic Car 0wner when they see 1, 👍
Still have our 1971 half-year 280 SEL, with the original 4.5 big block, in storage. One of these days, we may restore her.
the 4.5 is small block 6.3 is big block
@@raycroal What is the difference in cubic inch displacement?. I was told the 4.5 was the "Big Block" for the American market.
@@RAMROD4708 the 3.5 and 4.5 had the same size block the 6.3 had a bigger block roughly 380 ci v 270ci
tbh the 4.5 would be easier to live with and drive around they are more useable
@@raycroal Thank you, always wondered about that.
❤❤❤❤❤
Congrats, looking for one of those too.. what are the price ranges in order to acquire a decent one like yours?
Great color , too bad no s/r easy to fix heater levers 1
Beautiful, I've always loved the '72 280SE. The rear suspension seems to be too low, problems with the air suspension?
The 300 sel has retained most of its value compared to new however you will spend multiple amounts getting the air suspension renewed to the cost of thousands of dollars periodically cough up thousands of dollars every so often and you will sell it to some ignorant buyer. I see this problem on 420 sel s among other Mercedes benzes sitting in drive ways for months or years and other models. Do your homework before buying a Mercedes and do not buy a Mercedes with modules in it designed to get you back to the dealer periodically for repairs this is why I drive a Buick park Avenue ultra ,bullet proof engine btw you can spend thousands of dollars on a brand new mercedes your first year despite your warranty
Such a beauty! Couldn’t you wash it for the video?
i own 3 mercedes......been driving mercedes more than 20 yrs
Older cars have looks and class but when comes to handling and suspension newer vehicles are so much better.
Restoring old cars cost a ton if you like perfection.
On old cars plastic , rubber even metal are so brittle.
Spend money and enjoy.

With this you will get christmas cards from every company that sell petrol! A friend had a 450Sel and yees it was thirsty even though it worked perfectly as it should. You know, Mini's are a million times better 😉
Why not both? 😎
The Teutonic Clunk of closing the door.but you need to thoroughly clean that dirty engine mate!
Nice car, a classic from when business tycoons and dictators drove these. With the plastic parts if u can’t find these then you could get them 3d printed. Find a nearby college that has a 3d printing program and get someone to make u the pieces as part of their course work
No, silly, the slumped back does not mean the carriage needs attending to: that is the natural stance for such a carriage.
there is a "manufacturing error" on the air suspension valves on the W109.
There is a company that rebuilds them so the air suspension will hold the car up for months even if car is not driven.
In one of mercedessourse's videos, everything about the W109 air suspension is explained, and how to send the valves for rebuilt...

will last another 50 years!
Hi Is it for sale if it is for sale please let me know reply me thank you
Shes beautiful
Lovely car but I hope you have a trust fund
Shame it’s a left hand drive.
Needing a few thousand dollars (probably about $5-$10,000) spent on this old girl but you'll easily recoup that at resale time..
I won't recommend the w109. Very hard to get parts. I would suggest to get the w140 S320 or S500.
Thing's do break , it is called
wear & tear , oh & you can get
parts new or used if you are a
Cheapskate. 😝

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned
from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the
Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025
on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas
station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station fuel pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime.
Pakistani taxi.
I've never been to Pakistan, but I've ridden in Mercedes taxis all over Europe and Morocco for decades. About 10 years ago I was on the highway outside Cologne, Germany (commute hour...). I pulled up next to a Finback taxi from the mid 1960s, either a 190 or a 200 (I don't remember which), still in service. The body looked a little tired, but it was still going strong. In the US, I don't think we never got the "base" trim levels, only the premium trims.
you'll gain a subscriber if you tell me how much you paid for it
Buying a 50 year old Mercedes S class is gods way of telling you. You have too much money! Sorry
over complicated engineering as always with germans'.
