- On our way to a weekend at Potters Resort (there are two posts on hereabout the place) we decided to stop off at the nearest #GRIDSERVE that had #BYD Cars to view. we had never been to a Gridserve Forecourt before OR had a close look at any BYD vehicles.
We were totally shocked.!!

Our premium Seal is actually less expensive than the cheapest Model 3 we used to have.......in Australia. It's luscious and special.
Glad you are enjoying it. It’s only the price that is stopping me ( a Tesla supporter) from looking at a used one at a year old and chopping my two and half year old Model 3 in for one. Very tempting!!

Just to be clear… this post was to let folks know how I felt about Gridserve and BYD Cars. I realise I have a few American Subscribers which is great as it spreads the good word about EV ownership across the Globe. My genuine sentiment of stating they will not get BYD cars is because it’s a shame that the freedom of personal choice will not be offered to them. I do have a CHINA CARS topic post on the channel.

Nice overview. I really like the electric forecourt principal. The only downside is the price of 79p per kWh especially when there’s a Tesla Supercharger (open to all) a few miles away where you can charge for around half that price.
I agree. Prices will come down with more competition I guess but the price of the coffee will go up🥴😆
I think Kath has it right. Prices should come down as we go forward. It’s just a great idea of sitting in an air conditioned room having a rest / coffee as your car gets charged super fast. It has it all!
There are Superchargers at this location and I used them at 0.36p per kWh.
It would be interesting to see what percentage of various populations / countries have the ability to charge at home.
It’s around 68% who have access to a driveway here in the U.K.
Cheap 7kwh Lampost chargers are going up in some areas and Local Councils are allowing gulleys in Pavements for cables to lay in as to save being a trip hazard.

Why is the place buried down a lane. Forecourts used to be on the roadside - it's called convenience!
I think “buried down a lane” is a little to far but the concept allows it to go where it’s cheaper land and new roads. Its position is just off the outer ring road and saves any Norwich city traffic.
WoW BYD over here. USA increasing tariffs already so prices going up.
Sadly it’s not just BYD. There are 3 or 4 other excellent brands you will miss out on purely because of Politics. For the record , I’m no fan of Chinese Politics and yes , they have a poor Humanitarian policy so I’m not supporting their regime.
Tariffs simply show that some cannot compete because if the goods were poor you would not buy them. If like the U.K. I would estimate 60% or more of what Americans buy outside of food is imported from China and nothing is ever said. It’s sad that your Government allow all the tacky Dollar store items and most of Americas home goods, clothes and some Car Parts poor in to the States from China purely because they are cheap and nobody can produce them as fast or as plentiful, but then heavily tariff or even ban the Cars?
I want to see America’s Auto makers show confidence and be that good that Chinese cars are seen as “not as good” but alas it seems that will never happen. I’ve owned hundreds of American made Cars over here in England over 4 decades so I would love to see the USA do well with their EV’s at a price we can afford….. I’d buy one as I have with the Tesla I own…. Oops, no, it was made in China !

Tariffs work both ways and everyone loses out especially the consumer. Inevitably the US will lose out. You cannot feed a family with a flag and China processes a lot of food eaten in America
Excellent point… and all the Dollar store goods, cheap clothes, Auto parts and possibly more than half of all ever purchased in the Western World. However, mention a car and all of a sudden it’s Chinese “rubbish” and 100% tariffs. It looks like the American Automaker is a deadman walking.
Thanks for this interesting review of Gridserve's charging forecourt. We don't have anything like that here in France but what we do have are plenty of rapid chargers on all the main autoroutes and some of the RN roads as well. Having owned a Kia e-Niro since March 2019 we have found a massive improvement in charging infrastructure in the past two years and a big drop in prices too. We do visit the UK in the car once a year and the price you pay over there for rapid charging is much higher than here. Since Tesla opened their network two years ago charging €0.43/kWh...(about £0.37) the other providers (Ionity, Total, Engie etc) have lowered their prices to compete. At £0.79 there really isn't any cost advantage over driving an ICE car doing 50 mpg...in fact you would spend £40 getting 50 kWh giving you around 200 miles @ 4 miles/kWh. You would spend less on fuel...that needs fixing.
I cannot disagree… I see prices falling to around 60p kWh even on the fastest very soon as competition and especially Tesla will force prices down here in the U.K.
Most here in the U.K. have home chargers at very cheap rates so that eats up many of the losses when using expensive public chargers.

That looks great and certainly what we would like to see more of. I looked at the BYD but I must admit the Seal was more what I wanted but I found it difficult to get in and out due to my height and bad neck. You are correct in what you said, great looking car but should be cheaper than the Tesla Model 3 RWD at £39,990.
That is why I bought my Tesla Model 3 RWD as all other options with similar spec were around £45,000.
Same as you… I guess as they fall in price as used I would be very interested in taking one for a long term drive just to see the real difference.

You didn't mention the cost of the recharge. Did Gridserve pay you for the gushing how fantastic Gridserve is, review.
The cost was 0.36p per kWh ( for an average of 4.2miles if driven normally). I used the Tesla Superchargers.
Gushing is a little strong but yes… it’s great that a “Services” has been made totally around EV’s and not ICE Cars.
Gridserve had zero to do with the post… I wish they had!! I could do with some Promotion payments!!😁😁
the UI in BYD looks like wish tablet. Not convinced. The slowness of the software rotation will get to me.

Tesla Norwich (12 superchargers) now open to nonTesla EVs charges 41p low 52p Peak, so a 25p a kWh hit for a croissant and a posh coffee. On a 77kWh EV charging 20% to say 90% that's a £14 difference. Credit for the facility but the excessive pricing by the likes of Ionity Instavolt Shell and Gridserve needs to be addressed if they are to wean people away from petrol.
Yes… we have used the Tesla Norwich facility before. We only topped up from 65% so we’re not to concerned about the cost and the location saved us go nearer Norwich City. Prices will come down I believe as competition hits up.

The BYD has - compared to the European Model 3 3 disadvantages: price, drive train efficiency and "refinement" - its similar to the first gen Model from 2029 - and above all the missing Software environment.
When BYD solves the Software to at least as good as a Model S from 2012 and lowes their price a little bit it will become a hit in Europe. I bit better efficiency would be appreciated.
I’d say the refinement is there already. The software is a tad slower than my Tesla but the looks of the interior seem better. I guess we all have different wants and needs. I do agree on price because it’s a cheap car when in China and I know that a good mark up is made in the U.K. over the profits made in China which are tiny per car. If it listed at £35k I would have one instead of my Model 3. Over the “highland 3” I’d be unsure. Appreciate the input.
Serious question. What is it that convinced you that an EV was a better vehicle choice than an ICE?
I have owned many many V8 muscle cars, Classics, Limos and even regular family cars over 4 decades. I jumped ship after selling my 2015 Mustang GT to full Electric 5 years ago as I wanted fast off the mark acceleration without the noise, smell and expensive running costs. I also love the concept of less pollution with no exhaust. I’ve never looked back!
@@KKandEV Fair comment. I've owned powerful cars in my life too but can honestly say that the 'need for speed' (or acceleration) disappears as you grow up. Sure, the odd occasion when you want that kick is exhilarating but I can't afford the high cost of EV ownership nor am I prepared to be in at the start when all the issues have yet to be resolved. Maybe in time (say 10 years from now)?
I’m sure you will own one soon. The other thing is that it’s cheaper to run and own. I’ve had 3 used EV’s so no big money apart from one.

If you are regularly driving in congested traffics, EVs have an obvious advantages. The powerful silent acceleration can get you out of slow lanes without causing ruckus, and the acceleration cost less economically than the regular ICE cars.
The electric nightmare continues!!!! So my burning immediate question is, where are all those electrons coming from to charge these disposal EVs not to mention as residual values are currently woeful?????
Mostly from Renewables such as Solar, Wind and more. Coal is not even reading on the scale anymore AND it’s getting better year on year.
I don’t get the ignorance of the “disposable” comment but it’s very obvious you are not an owner or fan. You will be within a few years.

I don’t know what obsession this guy has with America got awful place.
“This guy” ran an import business from America for over 15 years and with hard work it paid off his Mortgage by age 47. I also ran American cars for many decades, met a lot of good American people and have seen some of the iconic Road Trip locations. I have travelled thousands of miles over the States and never had road rage, violence or crime against me. From Florida holidays to travelling thru the hottest place on the planet America has so much to offer. My guess is you have never been and have zero connection.
