Agreed! I can add that ive met him during a zappa plays zappa in gothenburg sweden and hes a humble guy that patiently signed and shook hands with fans all evening. Epic guitar duel with Mattias IA Eklund that night as a finale too. An honor to meet Dweez.

Dweezil is the first person to make sweep picking interesting to me. I like how he incorporates it into his soloing in very small chunks.
It's fantastic the way he has inherited his fathers guitar playing genius. But with a lot of hard work and practice of course....!
Can I just say "thank you" to DZ for this. This lesson is incredibly generous and worded in a very comprehensive manner. Personally, it's going to be invaluable to me. Other YT tutors take note: there are loads of beginners style tutorials on YT that are great and there are, seemingly, a preponderance of tutorials aimed at the more accomplished player (Rick Beato anyone). However, I have found tutorials for the reasonably advanced intermediate players (those of use, self taught, who have been playing and gigging for years, with "some" chops and "some" theory but, as DZ points out, have "hit a wall") are a little like hen's teeth. This is how it should be done. This is how it should be shown. This is how it should be explained and contextualised and this is how it should be worded. Believe me, it's difficult to access tutors for certain levels of playing if you don't live in a City. YT is a Godsend in this respect and this tutorial hits the nail right on the head! Thanks again.
BTW: I went to see Zappa Plays Zappa in Manchester 18 months, or so, ago. Absolutely great. If you're a fan of his Dad's music and haven't been to see DZ's band, I'd strongly recommend you catch them if you can..... "I know you'll be surprised!".
Who else can claim Steve Vai ,Eddie Van Halen and Frank Zappa taught them how to play guitar , Dweezil has became a monster guitarist .

It’s been so hard to find extremely effective lessons like this one at the “advanced intermediate” level, or whatever you want to call it. Pleasantly surprised to see it come from someone like Dweezil who’s so far beyond the player he’s catering too. He hit the mark, ab to play for like 6 hours now.
One of the coolest repackagings of the pentatonic I've heard! Almost gives it an different sound all together the way you play it!

Seeing Dweezil with grey hairs is so odd, as I always picture him as the young, slightly flamboyant member of the family, showing off his chest from a baggy, open shirt and a great mop of thick black hair.
He's in great shape for his age though, so hopefully we get more years out of him than his father. Poor old Frank was taken far too young (fuck cancer)
He's been a very busy man. BTW, if you manage to wade through this lengthy comment, you may like what you find near the end of it...or you may not...or if you don't like reading, just scroll down to it and find out. Anyway, I remember channel surfing and finding when he was hawking the Zappa Plays Zappa DVD/CD set on PBS. Of course, being Frank's all-time biggest fan, I couldn't help but check it out, just guessing from the program's synopsis that the Zappa Family Trust was releasing a box set or something like that. Boy, was I ever wrong! And when he announced during the concert that HE had "taken two years off to learn some of this music," I thought he was being disingenuous, having really took more like twice that time to learn the titles they were playing! But after watching the show, then buying the set, I was DYING to see them live...and I did, a couple of years later, after all but Dweezil and Scheila had left the band...and they were the opening act for Return to Forever. Now don't get me wrong, I've dug Return to Forever since it's original trio included John McLaughlin, but I loved The Zappa Plays Zappa band even more, and it was kind of disappointing that night. Part of that was because nearly all of the band was different and may not have had enough rehearsal to play a lot of what they did on the concert box set, but let's face it; trying to do all o' THAT set list without Napoleon Murphy Brock, Steve Vai, and Terry Bozzio is a pretty tall order. And since I had won the tickets by calling in to the local radio station, I really couldn't complain. But then...
Okay, I'll skip over the chunk of time where his two younger siblings became shockingly greedy and jealous, then filed a "cease and desist" lawsuit to prevent Dweezil from playing any of Frank's music, or even...get this...or even use the name, Zappa! Sighhhhhhh...but I digress...
Fast forward a couple of years and an accord was reached, and Dweezil can tour with Frank's music again, asking that we, his fans, forgive and forget...and THEN...joy of JOYS!!! Dweezil and the band came down here to Ft Lauderdale, to a tiny venue with his Choice Cuts Tour, maybe just two months ago!! And THIS time there was no opener, just two AMAZING hours of not only Frank's music, but played in a different and VERY exciting way! And here's where we find out what he was doing with all that time between lawsuits. He and the band had transcribed LIVE VERSIONS of every FZ title you could ever want to see them play! Yet again, Dweezil surrounded himself with an incredibly talented band, went through a tiny percentage of his dad's live recordings from the family vault, added some bootlegs too, and played over two hours of "your favorite FZ songs that you've never heard before," hence, the name of the tour is "Choice Cuts"! So...one more small thing...
I did manage to record a few numbers with my phone and upload them to my CZcams account. I think I've only got 3 or 4 up so far, and they ARE cell phone recordings, so don't expect TOO much, but they're there if anyone wants to check them out. Andy is one of them, and although Valley Girl isn't one of my favorites, I love THIS version because Dweezil had arranged for a young vocalist from the local School of Rock to come up onstage and perform it with them!! Also, I couldn't get much of this one drummer because of where I was standing, but another youngster from the audience got himself invited up there to play drums on Muffin Man! Actually, I suspect it was prearranged, and that the kid was also a School of Rock student, but who cares? So...I do have 3 or 4 more songs from that night to upload soon, so if you like the ones I've already got on the channel, you can sub the channel to receive the notifications for the next uploads if you like, and then unsub after you've seen them if you want. There are also, like five or six uploads of my cover band, Velocity in there too. Just some Metal, Grunge, etc. Cheers, and if you do watch Dweezil's songs from that night, ENJOY!!!

I'd be curious to see what you think of Joe Satriani's "ChromeBoy" Ibanez guitar. I'm assuming your taste is for legacy instruments, so you won't like Satch's instrument one iota.
Daniel Verberne it’s been two years since I commented on this post, so my taste for both instruments and music has completely evolved. That guitar, while still beautiful, no longer is something I would buy. Joe Satriani’s guitars are wonderful as well, but they don’t fit my play style. I play a variety of genres of music, but most of it is based in blues or jazz or sometimes a fusion of the two

Beautiful Deluxe. Mine has a Bigsby and no pickguard. We both have the pickups moved away from the bridge and right against the neck. I have also seen a Deluxe with the pickups in the usual positions.

Thats how I learned to play. I conduct musical experiments by playing at different times and speeds while using different finger movements and playing styles until I created something that sounded familiar or good to me in a certain tuning.

Frank Gambale Speed picking book goes into the nuts and bolts of this type of picking which is part economy and part sweep picking. Really gives your playing a smooth flowing sound.
Towards the end where he hammers on the pattern, without picking it almost morphs into a like B3-ish organ tone for half a second. Very cool.

I think this is a different guitar. Dweezil's #1 guitar has some sort of strange EMG looking humbucker neck pickup which this one doesn't have.
oh, yea you could be right. I just saw the white headstock and assumed it was the same but He definitely could have two with the mismatch headstock
This it the prototype Gibson (not the original) but watch the video on them repairing the headstock. Holy shit man, it honestly looks like they put a new neck on it.

For me this guy has way better economy pick tone than Gambale and others. When Gambale picks it's sounds like a scratching chalkboard

His pick tone still sucks.. I would say gambale is faster than Dweezil.. he taught at GIT? lol does that actually mean anything? A teaching stint @ Julliard or the Royal School of Music would mean something... I mean GIT? is that a joke?? Paul Gilbert taught there right out of high-school.. GIT is pretty much what CZcams is now. It's just a bunch of scales and arpeggios being taught at high speeds... lol "GIT".. hilarious

I see two pickup switches on the SG - are those added. And the whammy, I assume that is a custom addition as well? Just asking because I am not familiar with them, but love the sound.
The switches are for coil splitting and phase switching

Most of the players call this Speed Picking ,or economy picking .
Sweep Picking is really straight 2 octave arpeggios, which guys like Ron Thall play to death on every single second of every song

Not being a huge Frank / MOI fan, I've never known much about Dweezil other than his name, but man what a cool dude. Seems like a real "above average" human. I'd listen to him talk about changing oil in his car.........not a gay thing either.

I've met him a few times after his shows because he comes out and does lobby meet n greets like every time. Very cool, down to earth, approachable dude. The rest of the band as well are too. If you can catch him on a tour I suggest you go whether the music is familiar or not. You WILL be impressed by their musicianship if nothing else.
This totally+1. For me the biggest thing that bugs me about pentatonic licks are the same boring shape everyone plays. Also the fact people seem to think that only the key of A and E exist. I spice it up using MAJOR pentatonic licks vs the same ol' tired MINOR. Maybe throwing in a flat 5th or major 3rd so it's almost a hybrid between major and minor.

I thought the arm on the tremelo of my roxy was backwards, it felt odd to play it so i searched dweezil's sg and my arm is mounted in reverse lol
